Abstract

The conflict between Israel and Palestine has become a humanitarian tragedy and is in the spotlight of the world's mass media. This research seeks to determine the framing of the coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki's analysis model. Two leading online media, detik.com and republika.co.id, were selected as research objects because they have a long history, different audiences, and contrasting approaches to reporting, which reflect their views and handling of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is a qualitative study; data was collected through observation, documentation, and literature study. The analysis results found that detik.com and republika.co.id syntactically present the facts clearly; the script fulfills the 5W + 1H elements with credible source quotes. The thematic structure of detik.com emphasizes the number of victims due to Israeli attacks on Palestine. The rhetorical structure of detik.com contains idioms and displays photos relevant to the news content. The thematic structure of republika.co.id emphasizes the form of Israeli attacks on the Jabalia Refugee Camp. The rhetorical structure contains idioms and photos relevant to the news content. Detik.com frames the news by using the figurative word "bak neraka dunia” (like hell on earth) so that it seems dramatized in its point of view, while republika.co.id is more straightforward in writing sentences and reporting.

Abstract

Background: This research analyzes the function of environmental communication in the documentary film "Ekspedisi 3 Sungai Episode Juara Sampah Saset" which highlights the crisis of plastic waste pollution in the Brantas River. Purpose: Using a social constructivism paradigm and a qualitative-interpretative approach, this research examines how documentary films construct and communicate environmental messages to their audiences. Methods: Data were collected through documentary analysis of the films and interviews with environmental communication academics, documentary film practitioners, and environmental activists. Data analysis used qualitative content analysis method with Cox's environmental communication function framework. Results: An effective visual strategy, namely the depiction of the contrast between community activities and river conditions and the use of analogies in the narrative diction, has succeeded in creating an emotional atmosphere for the audience. The film is also successful in bridging the gap between issues of global concern on polluting the environment with the real life of the locals. The results of the waste audit that showed significant generation of single-use products waste in big companies give a fresh insight into the CSR program on the plastic waste crisis.  Conclusion: The documentary film Ekspedisi 3 Sungai Episode Juara Sampah Saset demonstrates that visual media can be a productive method of bringing complex environmental topics into the mass consciousness, incorporating both technical information and compelling stories to make people think about them. By using effective visual imagery and a brand audit style, the movie underlines corporate accountability toward plastic pollution, and relates macro problems to the micro-level experiences of the communities involved in supporting a moral thinking of waste disposal practices. Implications: The study will help in development of effective environmental communication strategies in Indonesia. Recommendations on how the more tangible effect of documentary movies on behavioral and waste management policy changes within a community can be quantified.

Abstract

Film, as a form of mass communication, plays a strategic role in the process of social inheritance and the transmission of cultural values to society. Film functions not only as a medium of entertainment but also as a means of cultural education capable of conveying and reproducing social values in society. On the other hand, the development of social media has also expanded the space for cultural communication to be more open, participatory, and dialogical. Social media allows people to no longer act solely as recipients of cultural messages, but also as active producers and disseminators of cultural content, thus making the process of cultural inheritance more dynamic and sustainable. This article aims to examine the role of film as a medium for social inheritance and cultural values, as well as the role of social media in the development of development communication. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through literature studies of relevant scientific journals and documentation of the films studied. The films analyzed include Laskar Pelangi, Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap, and Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck as representatives of Indonesian films that promote local cultural values. The results of the study indicate that film is able to carry out the function of social and cultural inheritance through the representation of moral values, traditions, and local cultural identity. Social media plays a role in cultural development through the digital preservation and dissemination of local culture from a development communication perspective.

Abstract

This research explores the role of ritual communication in the preservation of cultural identity and its relevance to sustainable development through the Erau Tradition in Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan. Ritual communication as a form of symbolic communication emphasizes participation, repetition, and transmission of shared meanings within the community, not just linear transmission of information. Erau Tradition, a traditional ceremony originating from the Kutai Sultanate, exemplifies ritual communication through a series of ceremonies, dances, music, and symbolic actions. This research examines how these rituals help strengthen social cohesion, preserve cultural values, and maintain a spiritual connection with nature, with a focus on the messages conveyed regarding environmental conservation and community solidarity. This research highlights that Erau Tradition is not just a cultural celebration, but also a powerful tool for sustainable development. By integrating cultural heritage, social unity, economic empowerment and environmental awareness, the ritual contributes to a holistic approach to development. In addition, the Erau festival is a major attraction for cultural tourism that supports local economic growth while promoting cultural sustainability. This research argues that ritual communication in Erau Tradition can play a significant role in fostering inclusive and sustainable development, strengthening local identity, and increasing environmental awarenessPenelitian ini mengeksplorasi peran komunikasi ritual dalam pelestarian identitas budaya dan relevansinya terhadap pembangunan berkelanjutan melalui Adat Erau di Kutai Kartanegara, Kalimantan Timur.

Meanwhile, the news values were dominated by bad news, with a percentage of 50.1%. Conclusion: Citizen journalism news on the Instagram accounts @hay.kalimantan and @seputarbanjarbaru is dominated by SDGs 11 on sustainable cities and communities, with a news value of bad news. Implications: Mapping of citizen journalism reporting on both Instagram accounts shows that citizens are actively voicing the SDGs 11 topic, particularly sustainable cities and communities, in the form of information about residential fires, month-long flooding, fallen trees, and road accidents. Instagram has become a channel for democratic public participation in the digital space, as anyone can become a journalist producing news.
