Abstract

This literature review aims to find out how orthodontic treatment can provide changes to the facial profile. The article is based on a literature review. Changes in the dentoskeletal and soft tissue profile around the mouth are found in orthodontic treatment. Correct positioning of the teeth over the basal bone can alter the profile, including the position of the upper and lower lips, na-solabial angle and labiomental angle. Through cephalometric radiography, hard and soft tissue structures can be analyzed si-multaneously, and tracing, then measuring, and evaluating. It was concluded that there is a relationship between orthodontic treatment and changes in the dentoskeletal and soft tissue profiles around the mouth.

Abstract

Growth is based on the concept of increasing the size and number of cells, development refers to the psychological condition and behavior of a person. The main stage of the process of growth and development in the formation of the human body is the formation of the craniofacial, which will then form the embryology of the oral cavity. The development and growth of the oral ca-vity occurs prenatally and postnatally starting from the fourth day which will continue into adulthood and experience negative growth during aging. Every human being goes through a period of prenatal growth. There are three periods in prenatal growth, namely preimplantation, embryonic and fetal. The three periods are sequential and continuous in forming the fetus. In general, humans have a pattern of growth and development which is the result of the interaction of many factors that affect growth and development. Anything can happen prenatally and postnatally, so attention and knowledge about embryology and develop-ment of the maxilla and mandible are needed.

Abstract

Orthognathic surgery is intended to restore jaw function, improve aesthetics and enhance the patient's quality of social life. The success of treatment is not only based on clinical aspects including post-treatment complications but also depends on patient satisfaction which is the patient's subjective perception of the treatment outcome. There are many factors that influence patient satisfaction with orthognathic surgical treatment outcomes including demographic factors, motivation and complications, and effective communication. This study is intended to determine patient satisfaction with the results of orthognathic surgical treat-ment at Unhas National Hospital. In this retrospective study, 9 patients who had undergone orthognathic surgical procedures in hospitals in Makassar, but only 6 patients met the inclusion criteria and were used as research subjects. Direct interviews with patients via telephone focused on patient satisfaction with the results of orthognathic surgery and the factors that might de-termine it. It was found that the majority of respondents (87.3%) showed satisfaction with the treatment outcome. Two patients experienced post-surgical sensory disturbances. There were a number of motivations underlying the choice of treatment inclu-ding improvement of facial aesthetics, masticatory and speech functions, and increased self-confidence, and all patients stated that the surgical results were in accordance with their expectations and motivations in choosing orthognathic surgical treat-ment. It was concluded that patients showed satisfaction with the surgical outcome due to the fulfillment of the patient's expec-tations of the surgical outcome, the lack of post-surgical complications such as sensation disorders and effective communi-cation between doctor and patient

Abstract

Good oral and dental hygiene is a challenge for orthodontic patients because food is easily trapped around brackets and under the arches of braces, thus becoming a barrier to brushing teeth. An effective way to get rid of plaque is to use a toothbrush regularly, to keep your teeth and mouth clean and healthy. This study was intended to determine the difference in dental and oral hygiene status between orthodontic and conventional toothbrush users in fixed orthodontic treatment. The results of the analysis of 6 articles are that the use of orthodontic toothbrushes is more effective than conventional toothbrushes in removing plaque. Or-thodontic toothbrushes can also provide a significant plaque reduction effect on fixed orthodontic appliance users. Orthodontic toothbrushes did not show any difference in removing plaque compared to conventional toothbrushes. It was concluded that there were differences in dental and oral hygiene status between orthodontic and conventional brush users in fixed orthodontic treatment.

Abstract

The use of fixed orthodontic appliances can cause side effects, one of which is tooth discolouration, which can affect patient com-fort and confidence. This study examines the relationship between fixed orthodontic treatment and the degree of tooth discolora-tion. Descriptive analytical study with a cross-sectional approach using 24 subjects; 12 users and 12 non-users of fixed orthodon-dontic appliances. After Spearman correlation test, it was found that the mean discolouration score in users of fixed orthodontic appliances was 1.25, while non-users was 0.5. There was a significant relationship between the use of fixed orthodontic ap-pliances and tooth discolouration (r=0.63; p=0.001), indicating a strong correlation. It is concluded that there is a significant and strong relationship between the use of fixed orthodontic treatment and the level of tooth discolouration.
