Abstract

Perlis Village is around the mangrove forest in Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia. This village has several barren lands potentially planted with mangroves. They were considering that the livelihoods of most of the people were fishermen and mangrove crab catchers. It is necessary to plant and rehabilitate damaged mangrove forests to restore and repair the ecosystem in Perlis Village. Planting activities were carried out in locations considered suitable for planting 200 seedlings. Three transects were made to obtain vegetation analysis data and carbon content. Each transect consists of six plots in natural forest and restoration forest. When the seedlings at the planting location were 3 months old, observations were carried out again, and of the 135 plants, approximately 67.16 percent were still alive from a total of 200 seedlings planted. Carbon storage in natural forests is 69 Mg ha-1 and 41.64 Mg ha-1 in restoration forests. By enriching the methods and estimating the potential carbon stocks of natural and rehabilitated mangroves in Perlis village in the context of Indonesia's climate change mitigation strategy, it is hoped that this information has the potential to help the blue carbon research community and policymakers

Abstract

The problem of fertilizers is often a factor inhibiting agricultural development. This is due to, among other things, the relatively high price of fertilizers, limited supply, decreasing type and quality, which makes it difficult for farmers to obtain fertilizers according to their needs. An alternative to anticipating and overcoming fertilizer shortages is that farmers are encouraged to use organic fertilizers or compost. Based on these considerations, outreach activities to farmers and direct training have been carried out in August-October 2020 in Kwala Bingai Village, Stabat District, Langkat Regency, Sumatera Utara Province. The results obtained are that these activities provide many benefits to farmers such as utilizing agricultural waste for making organic fertilizers so that they are not wasted and can overcome fertilizer scarcity and high fertilizer prices by making simple organic fertilizers. and this activity should be done frequently so that agricultural waste can be utilized.

Abstract

Percut Village is one of the villages located on the East Coast of North Sumatra which is directly opposite the waters of the Malacca Strait so that the main livelihood of the villagers is as fishermen. During pandemic, the government has implemented a Large Scale Social Restriction policy which has an impact on the social status of the community, such as limited fishing activities which have resulted in a decrease in the selling price of caught fish. In addition, the silting of sedimentation in 2020 resulted in the tides and coastline becoming unclear so that fishermen could not go to sea optimally. Based on these considerations, knowledge dissemination and training on techniques for creating aquascapes have been carried out for groups of young fishermen in July – September 2021 in Percut Village, Percut Sei Tuan District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra Province, North Sumatra Province. The results of this activity have a positive impact on the community to increase creativity and enrich soft skills by applying the knowledge gained to start becoming an entrepreneur as an alternative livelihood for fishermen youth groups so that they are able to compete in the midst of society and can create jobs.
