Abstract

Problems: Government policy on equalizing the Islamic boarding school education system with equivalent educational entities or muaddalah raises concerns among the pesantren community that the essence and distinctive nature of religious education, which has been the identity of pesantren for years, may undergo changes. Purpose: The purpose of this article is to depict the ability of the Islamic boarding school education system to adapt to the evolution of government policies, transitioning from marginalization and discrimination against pesantren to recognition as religious educational institutions. This transformation ultimately leads to achieving the level of equality (muaddalah) as formal educational entities in Indonesia Methodology: The research is conducted using a quantitative approach with a case study design on the adaptation mechanisms of the education system at Pondok Gontor, East Java, towards muaddalah policies. Results/Findings: The results of this research indicate that the institutional approach illustrates that educational institutions are entities with formal and rational management structures but have loose connections in educational activities. Policy alignment is carried out innovatively and dynamically, where the education system of Kulliyatul Muallimin al-Islamiyah (KMI) officially adopts accreditation mechanisms, management evaluation, teacher qualifications, curriculum standards, and educational infrastructure in accordance with government policies. Nevertheless, the commitment as an educational institution, a place where students study religious knowledge (tafaqquh fi ad-din), shape the character of students, and enhance skills to contribute to societal progress, remains steadfast and unchanged. Paper Type: Implementation policy research

Abstract

Takfir is an ideology of excommunicating fellow Muslims because of having different beliefs or expressing a different point of view. This article deals with the development of the takfir doctrine which separates some groups not only based on theological aspects but also on socio-political aspects, such as justifying the democratic system or collaborating with enemies of Islam. It particularly addresses the question of how Ayman al-Zawahiri globalized the takfir doctrine as a campaign against secularism, capitalism, human rights, and environmental crisis, in order to invite local jihadist groups to fight together in a global sphere.

Abstract

Islamic modernism emerged in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a response to global challenges, aiming to blend Islamic values with modern elements like science and technology. It spread globally in response to colonialism and modernization. In Indonesia, it developed during the transition to democracy, with regional autonomy leading to the implementation of Sharia in local regulations. Some radical groups in Indonesia sought to establish a strict Islamic state, driven by motives like the desire for a caliphate. In response, a liberal Islamic movement emphasizing contextual interpretations emerged. Islam Nusantara, represented by NU, exemplifies a moderate and tolerant form of Islam. Religious moderation is seen as an alternative to balance extreme interpretations, focusing on tolerance, democracy, and the rejection of violence. This article will delve into the journey of Islamic modernism, starting from its pioneers in Egypt and extending to Indonesia, where debates and developments in religious thought have become significant stages

Abstract

Abstract. As urbanization accelerates in Indonesia, access to affordable, inclusive, and culturally relevant childcare remains a persistent challenge for urban families, particularly among working-class and marginalized communities. This study investigates Rumah Anak, a community-led childcare initiative in an urban neighborhood of Indonesia, to understand how grassroots caregiving models foster social cohesion, reciprocal care, and resilience amidst institutional fragmentation and resource scarcity. Using a qualitative case study approach that includes semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, the research identifies three interrelated dynamics: trust-building and social bonding, reciprocal caregiving as a local ethic, and grassroots navigation of institutional ambiguity. The findings illustrate that Rumah Anak functions not merely as a substitute for formal daycare, but as a form of relational social infrastructure that strengthens community ties, supports maternal employment, and enhances child development. The study concludes that community-based childcare systems, when adequately supported, hold transformative potential for inclusive urban development and call for policy frameworks that center care as a shared civic responsibility.
