Abstract

Therefore, even if there are changes of forest into plantations, they still hope that the forest areas are strategic and holy places should not be tampered with in order to remain preserved. In the context of conflict resolution that is in society, the role of traditional leaders such as Temenggungs for Dayak and Penggawa's for Malay still important. Abstract

Nowadays ethnical celebration triggered by the uncontrollable identity politics,is happening in Indonesia. In West Kalimantan, for instance, a struggle for theidentity politics has succeeded in forming new governments in district levels. The new district governments are always based on the dominant ethnic groupsin the area. The political impact of the identity politics can whip up the ethnicalspirit by giving hegemony to ethnic monitory in the area. This paper argues thatthis phenomenon could become ethnic nationalism. Theoretically, identitypolitics is a struggle of a group or marginal people (periphery) politically, socially as well as culturally and economically. Various ethnic con?icts inWest Kalimantan relate to the identity politics and the resistance towardsthe hegemony of the ruling ethnic elite. The paper concludes that the ethniccon?icts in West Kalimantan are the forms of effort of an ethnic group toshow their existence. These people have been threatened, or for a longtime they have been marginalized systematically, so that their spirit to fghtagainst hegemony rise. Identity politics appearing in the forms of culturalinstitution such as ethnic customary council could be explained as the ethnicsystematic efforts to strengthen their identity, which eventually could becomea prospective ethnic nationalism.Key words : Politics, identity, con?icts, nationalism, ethnic, hegemony.

Abstract

The Dayak Shamans of Western Kalimantan of Borneo mediate between people and the Makhluk halus or invisible beings. The Makhluk halus who have their own well-defined roles, live in the sky, earth, water and other places, with similar needs as the humans, and the relations between humans and spirits in the context of traditional beliefs are inseparable. Interestingly, these beliefs are common to both Dayak Selako Shamanism and Kalimantan Islam. The Malay oral tradition has a major influence on the Dayak Selako culture in Western Kalimantan. In fact, both ethnic groups had originated historically from the same roots, but later separated by Islam and Christianity. Thus, irrespective of their affiliations to the major religions of Christianity and Islam, the Dayak Selako Shamanism and the Islamic spiritual healing practiced in Western Kalimantan follow the same oral tradition when conducting spiritual communication and shamanic healing.  For the Malays, communication with the spiritual world begins with the recital of the Islamic verses, forming an essential part of the the Malay identity. Interestingly, the Dayak Selako Christians too use the same verses. We argue that the Dayak Selako Shaman is not only an intermediary between the Dayaks and their spirits,  but also between the Dayak, Islam and Christianit religions. The mutual values of oral tradition in shamanism’s of the Dayak Selako and Malays have created a societal structure based on the natural cycle and life pattern.

Abstract

The background of this research is the issue of ethnic identity in West Kalimantan, where religion is associated with ethnic identity. This study used the ethnographic method by interviewing 26 Catholic religious leaders and community leaders for three months. The data analysis used in this study was a qualitative descriptive analysis. The data that had been collected based on observations, interviews, and documentation were analyzed and described critically. The research findings showed that the thesis that said Dayak identity was influenced by the Dutch colonial was not fully accepted. The formation of Dayak identity was actually influenced by Catholicism. The names of the inhabitants used the names of Catholic saints. The use of language, dance, and symbols with Dayak nuances carried out in Catholic religious rituals attracts the Dayak people to embrace Catholicism. The Dayak language as a medium of communication had been used by Catholicism, not only for singing texts but also for the entire series of ritual ceremonies to the most sacred expressions of prayer. This research is still far from perfect, but the results can at least be used as a dialectic for academic discussions about Dayak identity. Some data sources are still in Dutch, so they can only be understood in a limited way, for it is recommended that in further research these documents can be translated first.

Abstract

The background of this research is the occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic in the world, including in the Landak Regency, West Kalimantan Province. Various efforts had been made by the government, religious institutions, and traditional institutions. Dayak traditional institutions in Landak Regency and all traditional administrators in various Dayak villages in Landak Regency carried out Balala' traditional rituals to prevent transmission. The purpose of this study was to describe the perceptions and reasons for the Dayak indigenous people to carry out the Balala' ritual concerning efforts to prevent the transmission of the COVID-19. This study used a qualitative method, where data was taken by observation, literature study, and interviews. Interviews were conducted by going down the field and also interviews via WhatsApp. The data analysis technique used an interactive model. The results showed that the Balala' ceremony which was held by the Kanayatn Dayak people in the Landak Regency of West Kalimantan, was believed by those who attended it to be able to free them from the attack of this COVID-19 outbreak, because of three things, namely: (1) they had invited Jubata to come on during the Balala' ritual so Jubata would protect them; (2) The traditional Balala' ceremony is in line with the government's call for social distancing; and (3) those who had been Balala' are clean so that the COVID-19 virus cannot enter them. This research needs to be continued especially to see firsthand the effectiveness of the traditional Balala’ ceremony on the transmission of the Covid-19 and the impact of this pandemic on the social, cultural, and economic life of the Dayak indigenous people.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the Covid-19 pandemic that struck the world from March 2020 until today. This pandemic has changed the religious ritual of the Catholic religion around the world from the model of Mass congregation at church to online mass congregation at their homes. This mass congregation service at home indeed changed social interaction patterns. This research aims to investigate whether people's piety and social solidarity also changed with the mass service at home. By combining qualitative and quantitative methods during the last five months, this research finally found that, on the contrary, people's piety and social solidarity improved. It turns out that they are far more religious in their lives and very care about the catholic follower's life and other religious believers. This research has also made the church conduct paradigm reform in serving the people. The church has conducted a new kind of service in this New Normal era, i.e., Profilingcustomers. The church has studied their served people thoroughly. How is their profile, what do they need, and their expectation? The church has set customer focus, friendly, consistent, and continuous improvement. It is an effort to establish the people to the new performance style. The church is expected to keep on formulating new ways to overcome the shock of appreciation of faith due to this pandemic. In life, faith always has ups and downs; that is a portrait of human nature. This era is uncertain, but people will survive and live on. We are looking at the new face of the church, especially regarding piety and social solidarity of the people.
