Abstract

Abstract

The Donan River estuary is the area where the Donan River meets the Nusakambangan Strait, has a level of pollution that shows an increase, one of which is caused by human activity. Phytoplankton has an important role in determining the status of waters by knowing the diversity and types of plankton. The research aims to determine the community structure of the phytoplankton as a biological indicator and determine the condition of the Donan River Estuary based on the Diversity Index. This research was conducted out in April-May 2024. The sampling method was a sample survey. The results of this research show that the phytoplankton abundance of the Donan River estuary ranges from 42-382 ind/L, which means it is oligotrophic. The results of phytoplankton identification showed that many Bacillariophyceae and Cyanophyceae classes were found. The diversity index value at station 1 is 1.199 and at station 2 is 1.623. The diversity index value shows that the Donan River Estuary has moderate phytoplankton community stability and water quality is moderately polluted. Based on the uniformity index at station 2 the uniformity is more even and based on the dominance index there is no dominant genus.

Abstract

Aquatic ecosystems are very important for biodiversity and play a crucial role for the environment as well as for humans. Phytoplankton, the primary producers in this system, significantly contribute to oxygen production and CO2 absorption, making them crucial for global climate regulation. However, climate change marked by rising temperatures and unpredictable weather patterns has negatively impacted the abundance and distribution of phytoplankton, thereby threatening marine biodiversity and the stability of ecosystems. This study focuses on analyzing the impact of climate change on the abundance of phytoplankton in the oceans and identifying strategies to address it, through literature review. The research results indicate a significant decline in phytoplankton abundance, influenced by significant temperature changes from year to year. Effective mitigation strategies, including efforts to reduce greenhouse gases, protect biodiversity, and educate the public, are essential for preserving aquatic ecosystems. This research emphasizes the need for immediate and sustained action to protect marine biodiversity and ensure ecological balance.

Abstract

The riverine ecosystems traversing Banyumas Regency through the Serayu Watershed (DAS Serayu) serve as strategic freshwater resource zones, supporting both ecological functions and local livelihoods through economically valuable fish species. However, anthropogenic pressures such as domestic waste pollution, land-use conversion, overfishing, and the use of destructive fishing methods have led to significant ecological degradation. This study aims to: (1) identify key issues in the management of riverine fish resources in Banyumas as common property resources, and (2) explore community-based local wisdom practices implemented for sustainable fisheries conservation. Conducted in February 2025 at the Pokmaswas Lestari Kaliku post in Rawalo Subdistrict, this research employed a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing field observations, in-depth interviews, and FGDs with 38 respondents drawn from key institutions, including the Provincial Marine and Fisheries Office, Banyumas Fisheries and Livestock Office, local fishery extension workers, the Rekam Jejak Nusantara NGO, and 9 active community monitoring groups (Pokmaswas). Findings reveal that Pokmaswas have adopted various forms of traditional ecological knowledge as management instruments, including: (1) prohibition of hazardous fishing gear (poison and electric shock), (2) establishment of core conservation zones (fish sanctuaries), (3) periodic restocking of indigenous fish species, (4) enforcement patrols against illegal and destructive fishing practices, and (5) public education and outreach initiatives on river ecosystem conservation. These practices demonstrate not only ecological effectiveness but also the critical role of community participation in achieving sustainable fisheries management. In conclusion, local wisdom-based approaches prove to be strategic and effective in addressing complex aquatic resource management challenges, offering an integrated pathway between conservation imperatives and the socio-economic needs of riverside communities.
