Abstract

The library is an essential learning resource center for schools. For this reason, every school or madrasa is required to have a library that meets national education standards. Although formal provisions require educational institutions to have a library, many schools do not yet have a library. The development of school libraries, especially elementary schools (SD), is still lacking compared to the middle school, high school, and college libraries, thus giving the impression that SD libraries are marginalized. This study explored the development constraints that led to the marginalization of elementary school libraries in Singaraja, Bali. This research used a qualitative approach in the form of multiple case studies. The data collection techniques were in-depth interviews with appointed informants, total and purposive samples, and snowball sampling. Data analysis in this study followed Peter Berger's model with conceptualization, proof, and objectivation steps. The results indicated that there were several obstacles to the development of elementary school libraries, namely (1) the dadi-dadi dogen ideology adopted by the principal; (2) the teaching and learning process is still teacher-centered; (3) a comprehensive education system; (4) unprofessional librarian; (5) the government is not in favor of the school library management policy; and (6) free school jargon. These findings prove that the general assumption about the constraints on developing school libraries due to limited financial capital is not entirely true. There are other more important factors, namely power relations related to ideology.

Abstract

This critical ethnographic research aims to uncover the ideology behind the conversion of moors to forests and its implications for the sustainability of fields as an agricultural system. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and literature study. The results showed that the change of moor into the forest was due to the ideology adopted by farmers and the government's developmentalism and market ideology. This is complemented by binarism, which puts the moor in a negative connotation with rice fields. Binarism also applies to the younger generation, who views work as a farmer as unfavorable. This ideology is related to making the moor an agricultural system with no use, economic, sign, or symbolic value for farmers. The findings of this study can enrich the theory of ecological change due to the various ideologies. This research is expected to be the basis for various parties in making decisions to realize sustainable moor agriculture.

Abstract

Every Hindu family in Bali dedicates offerings of Canang Sari on a daily basis. The provision of the offering is not always created by them, but they buy canang sari. This has turned canang sari into a market commodity. Therefore, women have emerged as canang sari street vendors in the several towns in Bali. This study examines the reasons why women do this job, especially in Singaraja Regency. The approach of this research was qualitative study which focused on critical social theory. The results show that the reasons women do such business activities not solely because canang sari street vendors is an informal economic sector, but also it is related to the ownership of economic, social, cultural, and symbolic capitals. This reason is strengthened by the condition of Balinese who have affected by McDonaldization society so they prefer to buy canang sari rather than making it their own.

Abstract

Padangabulia Traditional Village is the only village in Bali that maintains the manak salah tradition. Even though the Provincial Government of Bali officially abolished this tradition in 1951 because it was considered to violate religious, Hindu, legal, and health teachings. It is interesting to study this phenomenon through field research using a qualitative approach to find reasons why they still maintain the tradition of manak salah and the rituals that accompany it. Interviews with traditional and religious leaders in Padangbulia village complimented the main data. The results of the study indicated that the maintenance of the tradition of manak salah in this village was legitimized by Lontar Tutur Brahma Sapa and Lontar Dewa Tatwa. These two lontars are sacred texts that are believed to be true. Lontar Tutur Brahma Sapa emphasized thatkembar buncing, male and female twins are wrong because Lord Brahma cursed it. The binarism between humans versus animals reinforces this. Married couples with more than one male and female child were identical to animals. This condition causes contamination of purity or leteh in humans. The Tri Hita Karana ideology outlines that humans are united with fellow human beings and the natural environment and God/gods who reside in temples. This idea causesleteh in humans and spreads to the natural environment and temples. Lontar Dewa Tatwa explains that impurities must be cleaned through a purification ritual, includingmelastito the sea. Whenever there is a case of manak salah, they will implementmelasti at the Buleleng Harbor beach. This creates a unique tradition: this traditional village does not perform melasti at every Nyepi Day celebration but only when there is a manak salah. This ritual not only has a religious-magical function but also has a social function. These functions strengthen Lontar Tutur Brahma Sapa'sposition in maintaining the manak salah tradition.

Abstract

The Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 43 Year 2007 concerning Libraries states that schools are required to have school libraries based on the National Standards of Library (SNP). This condition forces every school to develop a library, even though the conditions are still far from the standard set. To realize the existence of library, each school uses various resources in its school to establish a school library. This study aims to explore the efforts of primary schools in Singaraja City to fulfill their obligations in providing library space. This study uses a qualitative approach based on critical social theory commonly used in the Cultural Studies approach. The data collection was carried out by in-depth interviews, involved observation and document study. Data analysis in this study follows Peter Berger's model with the following steps: conceptualization, conceptualization results, verification, and objectivation. The results show that the obligation to have a school library at the primary school level is not easy due to various obstacles. This gave rise to the ideology of permissivism or in Balinese it is called dadi dadi dogen. This ideology allows schools to use various types of spaces to become libraries, for example classrooms, teacher rooms, warehouses, UKS, and so on. Keywords: elementary school libraries, dadi dadi dogen, permissivism, ideology

Abstract

This study aims to understand the structure, content, and aspects of sexuality based on patriarchal ideology in Lontar Usada Rukmini Tatwa, considered as a cultural text. Thus, to pursue the aim of this study, critical discourse analysis was applied to analyze the text since this analysis technique could deconstruct, interpret, and read cultural texts. The lontar's contents then were analyzed through the following steps, namely conceptualization, conceptualization results, proof, and objectivation. The results of the analysis showed that the structure of the lontar consists of the opening, introduction, content, and the space and time of writing. The results also revealed that the lontar contains recipes for women's beauty and health, husband's courage, sperm health maintenance, and ways to have children for married couples. The contents of the lontars are legitimized religiously and magically so that people believe more in their efficacy. And, it is also found that the contents of this lontar are dominated by erotic and reproductive sexuality discourses based on patriarchal ideology associated with Hinduism. This is symbolized through the phallus as a medium to control women. In conclusion, Lontar Usada Rukmini Tatwa can not only be referred to as an erotic and reproductive sexuality cultural text, but also an ideological cultural text based on Hinduism.

Abstract

This article results from field research on the Pura Kerta Negara Gambur Anglayang in the Kubuaddan Traditional Village, Buleleng, Bali. This research aims to reveal the background of the use of the names Ratu Subandar, Mecca, Melayu, and Sundawan as names for the shrines or pelinggih at the temple. This research uses a qualitative approach in the form of historical and cultural research. The theoretical approach used is cultural materialism. The research results show that the use of the names Ratu Subandar, Mecca, Melayu, and Sudawan is related to the location of the temple, which was previously a port called Tabanding. This port was busy with Chinese, Mecca (Arab), Malay and Sundanese traders. The Chinese also played an important role as subandars. The diversity of merchant visits gave rise to a multicultural social structure based on trade-economic infrastructure. This forms an ideological superstructure, namely the belief in gods, also characterised by diversity. This pattern also follows pantheistic theology in Hinduism, which emphasises that a transcendental God can be immanenced by natural phenomena. This belief causes natural phenomena that have the potential to provide prosperity to be personified by gods. The Balinese accept it because it also fits the image of the god as the personification of God to provide prosperity to humans.
