Abstract

Mathematical conceptual understanding is a fundamental skill that serves as a foundation for more advanced abilities, including reasoning, communication, connections, and problem-solving. However, this foundational skill is influenced by students’ prior mathematical abilities. Therefore, the objective of this study is to identify and describe differences in students’ mathematical conceptual understanding based on their prior mathematical abilities. This research employs a mixed-method approach, involving 87 purposively selected students enrolled in the Analytic Geometry in Planes and Space course. The research instruments include a mathematical conceptual understanding test and documentation of students’ prior mathematical abilities. Data were analyzed quantitatively using one-way ANOVA and qualitatively by exploring mathematical conceptual understanding across categories of prior mathematical abilities. The findings reveal that both quantitative and qualitative analyses indicate that students with high prior mathematical abilities demonstrate superior mathematical conceptual understanding compared to those with medium or low prior mathematical abilities.

Abstract

The aim of the research was to develop a collaborative online learning design for integral calculus courses through lesson study activities. The study employed didactical design research as the research design. Participants in the research consisted of 19 students (aged 19–22 years, 18 women) from two private universities in Indonesia. The researcher served as the main instrument in the study, utilizing several additional instruments, such as collaborative online learning design, presentation slides, and documentation studies. The data were analyzed using qualitative data analysis. The research revealed that collaborative online learning design through lesson study activities helped prospective mathematics teachers understand concepts related to integral calculus, especially definite integrals and the substitution method. This was because the collaborative online learning design used learning videos as a means for students to understand the concept of integral calculus. Apart from that, the collaborative online learning design also facilitated students’ understanding of this concept more deeply.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to analyze and describe students' mathematical communication skills based on gender and cognitive style. Researchers involved 97 students at one of the tertiary institutions in the city of Mataram. The instruments used consisted of a test of mathematical communication skills in the form of an essay consisting of 4 questions and a Group Embedded Figure Test (GEFT) to identify students' cognitive styles. Data analysis used two-way ANOVA. The results showed that the mathematical communication skills of female students outperformed the abilities of male students. Regular and thorough characteristics as well as better verbal skills support female students in conveying back mathematical concepts in solving problems. Differences in cognitive styles provide different mathematical communication abilities to students. Students who have a field independent cognitive style have better mathematical communication skills compared to students who have a field dependent cognitive style. Different characteristics in managing information and identifying it are aspects of cognitive style. The results of this study are expected to be one of the references in considering the internal factors that influence mathematical abilities, especially mathematical communication skills.

Abstract

This article aims to identify students' learning obstacles in learning mathematics, especially in the material of enumeration rules. This study uses a descriptive exploratory design. Data were collected through tests, in-depth interviews with students and teachers, and classroom observation techniques. The results show that students face epistemological, ontogenic, and didactic learning obstacles. Epistemological obstacles are seen from students' difficulties in distinguishing between the concepts of permutation and combination. Ontogenic obstacles include weaknesses in mastering prerequisite materials, such as basic mathematical operations, and low student self-confidence. Didactic obstacles arise from less varied learning methods, with the dominance of lecture methods and minimal use of visual aids or interactive media. The main factors causing obstacles involve a combination of internal factors, such as limited understanding of concepts and operational errors of students, and external factors, such as teaching strategies that are less adaptive to students' needs. Based on these findings, recommended learning strategies include the use of visual aids, problem-based learning approaches, group-based learning, and reinforcement of prerequisite materials through gradual exercises.

Abstract

Converting mixed numbers into common fractions is one of the formula problems in learning fractions which is a problem in learning. However, not many studies have examined this conversion. In addition, there are not many studies that try to provide solutions to the conversion problem. Therefore, this study aims to identify the types of learning barriers students experience when converting mixed numbers into common fractions and provide alternative solutions to minimize these learning barriers. The research design used to achieve this goal is didactical design research (DDR). DDR was chosen because it uses the results of identifying types of learning barriers to develop didactic designs in learning fractions. The participants in this study were math teachers with 26 years of age and less than 5 years of teaching experience. The main instrument in this study was the researcher using several additional instruments, such as fraction comprehension tests, interview guides, and didactic designs. The data was then analyzed using qualitative data analysis. The results of the study revealed that students indicated that they experienced learning difficulties with different types of epistemological obstacles because they rarely start learning with everyday life problems. The solution offered in the didactical design is the use of the problem as an initial situation in learning which students will then respond to in the form of a didactical situation. The recommendations offered in this study are the implementation of the didactic design itself.
