Abstract

ABSTRACT International Justice Mission (IJM) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that focuses on addressing exploitation and crimes against children, women, and victims of violence. The Philippines is one of the global epicenters of the problem of Online Sexual Exploitation of Children (OSEC). Every week, more than 20,000 images of child sexual abuse are uploaded to the internet. Therefore, IJM plays a crucial role in tackling the issue of OSEC in the Philippines. Referring to Clive Archer’s theory of international organizations, there are three primary roles that international organizations may assume: as actors, instruments, and arenas. In this study, IJM functions as an actor. As such, IJM fulfills its role by helping establish the Philippines Internet Crimes Against Children Center (PICACC), a coordinated unit that also collaborates with various international and local organizations. IJM also partners with META and provides comprehensive recovery services for OSEC survivors. The research findings show that IJM plays a significant role not only as a legal actor but also as a collaborative partner with national and international institutions. IJM has supported hundreds of rescue operations, contributed to the arrest and conviction of perpetrators, and developed trauma-informed aftercare programs for survivors. This study concludes that IJM’s integrated approach serves as an effective model of intervention in combating OSEC and underscores the importance of crosssector collaboration in addressing online crimes against children. Abstract

In August 2023, the Chinese government released its 2023 Standard Map, which unilaterally claims a significant portion of the North Natuna Sea. This claim overlaps with Indonesia’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and has triggered a renewed escalation of maritime tensions. It also reinforces China’s Gray Zone Operations strategy, particularly through the China Coast Guard, thereby posing a threat to regional stability in Southeast Asia. This study analyzes Indonesia’s response using a soft power approach rooted in defense diplomacy to address the emerging threat. Employing a qualitative method and drawing on the theory of bandwagoning, the paper evaluates Indonesia’s defense diplomacy towards China through analysis of official documents, academic publications, and credible media sources. The findings indicate that Indonesia’s defense diplomacy in the North Natuna Sea emphasizes soft power mechanisms through bilateral cooperation under the 2007 Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA), which includes officer exchanges, non-traditional military exercises, and intelligence sharing. This strategy has helped foster trust and crisis communication, particularly through forums such as Navy-to-Navy Talks. However, it has not directly addressed the gray zone tactics employed by the China Coast Guard. As an adaptive strategy, Indonesia’s soft power diplomacy requires reinforcement through a more responsive maritime policy to effectively counter non-conventional security threats. Abstract

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) is one of the international conventions that regulates the rights of persons with disabilities and has been adopted by ratifying countries. Indonesia, as one of the ratifying countries, has established national regulations through Law No. 8/2016 related to Persons with Disabilities. As a concrete step of implementation, local governments such as Palu City passed Local Regulation No. 10 of 2023 to affirm the commitment of local governments in ensuring the fulfilment of the rights of persons with disabilities, especially related to employment accessibility. This research analyses the implementation of UNCRPD in the initial policy of Palu City through the regulation during 2023-2024. This research analyzes how the implementation of UNCRPD in the initial policy of Palu City through the Local Regulation during 2023-2024. The analysis was conducted using a qualitative method by collecting primary data through interviews with relevant parties and secondary data through literature and document studies. This research uses constructivism perspective and Martha Finnemore and Kathryn Sikkink's norm internalization theory. The result of this research shows that the implementation of UNCRPD in Palu City has shown a progressive first step, but has not been fully achieved substantively. Thus, a more systemic and participatory approach is needed to encourage the effective implementation of the local regulation. Keywords: UNCRPD, Persons with Disabilities, Employment Accessibility

Abstract

The community service activity aims to enhance the understanding of parents and young couples regarding stunting and the importance of ensuring that children are free from this issue to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Riau Province. The primary challenge faced is the low level of knowledge about stunting and its impacts, which can lead to nutritional deficiencies that potentially affect children's health and intellectual development. The method employed in this initiative is an interactive workshop involving 50 participants, including parents, prospective parents, and healthcare professionals. This activity is conducted in collaboration with the local Health Department, which serves as a partner to provide materials and facilitators. Evaluation is carried out through pre-tests and post-tests to assess participants' knowledge improvement, as well as surveys regarding changes in attitudes and behaviors related to child nutrition. Data collection methods include questionnaires and interviews as primary data, along with literature reviews as secondary data. The results achieved from this activity indicate an 80% improvement in participants' understanding of stunting prevention, as well as positive changes in parenting practices and children's nutritional intake. Through this initiative, it is hoped that the community will become more cognizant of the importance of nutrition during the first 1,000 days of life, which can lead to a healthier and more qualified generation.

Abstract

This paper will analyze how sexism is closely correlated with violence that can endanger vulnerable groups, both men and women. The violence referred to here is psychological violence. People tend to more easily recognize physical violence compared to psychological violence, which ranks first in destroying someone's mental health. This paper will also elaborate on how the influence of gender discrimination determines the presence or absence of violence in the scope of sexist behavior toward the lives of vulnerable groups. Sexism and gender stereotypes serve as the primary references in classifying what behaviors are acceptable and what are not, what should be done, and what should be abandoned by both men and women. These gender stereotypes bring consequences for anyone who is not consistent with the existing and socially accepted patterns. This paper selects the elaboration of the concept of sexism as the primary analytical tool using a qualitative method. Data is collected by conducting in-depth interviews with 86 selected informants and analyzing references and written documents related to sexism and violence. This paper demonstrates that violence in the context of sexism will continue to claim victims from vulnerable groups if the values of violence within sexism are not stopped.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the efforts of the Pekanbaru Class I Immigration Office in handling illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. The research method used is a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through interviews and field observations. This study utilizes public policy theory because it can explain how government policies, particularly those related to handling illegal immigration, are formulated, implemented, and evaluated. The results show that the Pekanbaru Immigration Office has taken various strategic steps, such as strengthening immigration supervision at regional entry points, collaborating with other law enforcement agencies, and increasing early detection through patrols and document checks. In addition, the immigration office also carries out administrative immigration actions, such as detention and deportation of illegal immigrants proven to have violated statutory provisions. Therefore, cross-sectoral synergy and increased institutional capacity are needed to address the problem of illegal immigration more effectively and sustainably. Abstract

This study focuses on the impact of the European Union's oil embargo against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine between 2022 and 2024. The embargo was part of a broader strategy of international economic sanctions, employed as a diplomatic tool to pressure Russia into ceasing its military aggression in Ukraine. As a collective of European nations that had been major importers of Russian crude oil, the European Union held a significant share of Russia’s oil export market. Consequently, the embargo exerted considerable economic pressure on the Russian economy. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method, relying on data collected through literature reviews encompassing books, academic journals, websites, and relevant official documents. This study is grounded in the theoretical framework of international political economy, with particular reference to economic sanctions theory and the nation-state level of analysis. The findings indicate that the EU’s oil embargo succeeded in economically pressuring Russia, as evidenced by a decline in its oil export revenues. However, Russia demonstrated a notable capacity for economic adaptation in response to these sanctions. The embargo also had repercussions for the European Union itself. Ultimately, the oil embargo served as a critical instrument in the West’s response to the Ukraine invasion—producing tangible economic effects, yet falling short of altering Russia's strategic decisions regarding its military actions. Abstract

This study examines the efforts of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) to safeguard women’s rights in Afghanistan from 2021 to 2023, particularly after the Taliban’s return to power, which has curtailed women’s access to education, employment, health care, freedom of movement, and political participation. Employing a qualitative descriptive method that combines library research with an analysis of official UNAMA documents, UN reports, and relevant news sources, the study draws on pluralist perspectives, Clive Archer’s theory of international organizations, and Joshua S. Goldstein’s level‑of‑analysis framework. The findings show that UNAMA has successfully documented, reported, and advocated against abuses of women’s rights, including torture, restrictions on freedom of assembly, and discrimination within the judicial system. Despite advocacy through dialogue with the Taliban, reporting to the UN Security Council, and coordination with international actors for diplomatic pressure and humanitarian assistance, UNAMA faces significant challenges, such as limited enforcement authority and Taliban resistance to international norms. The research underscores the necessity of sustained and consistent international support to ensure the protection of women’s rights in Afghanistan. Abstract

This study aims to analyze how a community manages its resources to address the issue of stunting, which is defined as impaired growth in children due to chronic malnutrition and repeated infections (based on Indonesian Presidential Regulation No. 72 of 2021). Stunting is a serious problem that affects both the physical and psychological development of children. The community studied is Kampung Banjar Seminai, Dayun District, Siak Regency, which claims to have successfully reduced stunting rates in 2023. This is notable because, while the overall stunting rate in Siak Regency slightly increased by 0.33% between 2013 and 2023, the rate in Riau Province dropped significantly from 36.8% to 14% during the same period. The research method involved interviews with people actively involved in tackling stunting at the village level, including the village head, village health workers, and Posyandu volunteers. The results show that the community’s ability to manage resources, along with active participation and good coordination among village actors, played a key role in reducing stunting in Kampung Banjar Seminai. This study highlights the importance of local community involvement in stunting prevention programs and recommends strengthening support and empowering resources at the village level to improve health intervention outcomes.
