Abstract

Title: Foodscape in Heritage Area; Case Study: Sekanak Area at Palembang City   Foodscape is a new perspective of multi-element integration between food, people, and the environment. Commonly, a heritage area that only promotes the building as the image has other potential sectors for its development, especially foodscape. Sekanak area in Palembang city is well known for its heritage buildings, such as shophouses (ruko), Palembang traditional houses of Limas, and the domination of Panggung house (Rumah Panggung). Furthermore, the Sekanak area is also dominated by the culinary activity of Palembang traditional foods. Integration between heritage areas and culinary as the reflection of values and history provides a strong perspective of the foodscape. This research uses a case study method of the Sekanak area in Palembang city using tools such as literature study, surveys, and mapping analyses. The output of the research proposes a relevant study between foodscape and heritage areas that would be a basis for further study or research to improve multi sectors of development in the areas.

Abstract

Aim: This study examines the current living culture of riverbank residents by observing the choice of factual house and the house preferences. A house is the physical characteristic of cultural products indicating the current living culture. The riverbank settlements are part of the historical development of the city of Palembang. Methodology and Results: This research focuses on the physical form of residential buildings from the perspective of socio-cultural preservation. Restoring the characteristics of the riverbank area is a necessary potential. The design process can be directed toward technical innovation, social aspect and the use of materials that correspond to the features of the area. Furthermore, the cultural ecological interaction has created a living culture in the riverbank. This is evident in the constructed houses of residents with structure, technology, and material conforming to the fluctuating conditions of the ecosystem. The settlement’s characteristics generate an image of a river city, which have also become a tourist attraction in Palembang. However, the living culture has changed due to the innovation in building technology, the shift in the focus of development, and the availability of natural resources which diminish these features. Conclusion, significance and impact of study: This will encourage tourists to visit the developed areas with a preservation approach, integrating new cultural living with the conservation of the river city features for tourism interest. Furthermore, the preservation of tourism activities are not only unchanged, but also an adaptation flexibility to continuously look for new forms for the symbiosis between man and nature.

Abstract

The complex potential of villages provides a significant chance for local development. Commonly, the potential is developed as a single sector in each village through a separate program of relevant institutions. Lahat Regency is one of the regencies in South Sumatera Province, which has enormous local potential within the district, both material (natural resources, traditional houses, foods, etc.) and immaterial heritage (history, culture, traditions, etc.). These components of cultural heritage wealth will contribute to regional development and Indonesian identity. Among these districts, the Government of Lahat Regency focuses on Pulau Pinang District, particularly Tanjung Sirih and Lubuk Sepang Villages, as integrated tourism villages. This research aims to establish a development planning model by establishing integrated tourism planning, The integration not only unites two villages, Tanjung Sirih Village and Lubuk Sepang Village, in one location perspective related to their close geographical location, but also programs in local tourism themes based on the dominant potential, Tanjung Sirih with its foodscape and Lubuk Sepang with its landscape. Foodscape is an integration between food, people and environment, while landscape architecture is the human and environmental components. The research used qualitative research methods with local potential analysis and development area modeling; several variations of tools were used, such as literature work, surveys, and discussions. The reasearch output is an input for the tourism village integration in Lahat Regency as a development planning model and the foundation of potential tourism village development programs in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study investigates how local values, especially economic activities like cracker (Kerupuk) production, influence the architectural characteristics of houses in Tanjung Pering Village. Cracker production, a long-standing livelihood passed down through generations, significantly shapes the community’s cultural identity and building designs. This research aims to examine the impact of local economic practices on architectural design, focusing on functionality, aesthetics, and material selection. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed, gathering data through interviews with residents to understand cultural heritage and hereditary livelihoods. The findings indicate that socio-economic conditions and local customs profoundly shape architectural characteristics in Tanjung Pering Village. Spatial organization, structural design, and material selection are all adapted to support cracker production activities. Kitchens are often placed below or outside houses to facilitate production, while the shift from tembesu wood to concrete illustrates economic constraints and material scarcity. The strategic placement of windows on the front facades improves air circulation, which is essential in the region’s tropical climate. The study highlights how economic practices and cultural values combine to define the architectural identity of the village. This research provides insights into how cultural heritage and economic activities influence vernacular architecture. By examining the relationship between local livelihoods and building design, the study offers valuable guidance for developing culturally sensitive architectural practices that preserve local identity while addressing contemporary needs.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze settlement patterns spread across several areas in Palembang City, especially in the city center which have been formed based on population composition in the upstream, transitional and downstream watersheds. The city of Palembang is in a lowland area, formed on a swamp with many tributaries from the main river that divides the city, namely the Musi River. The Musi River divides Palembang City into 2 regions, namely Upstream (Seberang Ulu) and Downstream (Seberang Ilir). The tributaries are divided geographically according to the area, there are 15 tributaries upstream and 9 tributaries downstream. Since the river was formed, the residents of this city have lived along the watershed by building residences both periodically and permanently. This longitudinal pattern downstream of the sub-watershed empties into the Musi River. Apart from the longitudinal pattern, a random/scattered pattern is also formed to fill empty land between settlements along the watershed. Another pattern that is further away from the watershed is a centralized pattern where the buildings are neatly and orderly designed. The composition of the population living in these settlement patterns is important to research because it is an indicator of sustainable development. The composition includes demographic characteristics, social status with stratification therein, economic stratification, population distribution both geographically and administratively and surviving culture. These five characteristics can determine the type of housing being built and describe the level of community welfare.
