Abstract

Kegiatan Fun English Day dilaksanakan di MI Plus An-Nur, Desa Manggari, Kecamatan Lebakwangi, Kabupaten Kuningan, selama enam hari, bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris masyarakat Desa Manggari dalam usia kelas 1-3 melalui pendekatan yang interaktif dan menyenangkan. Analisis situasi menunjukkan bahwa meskipun Desa Manggari memiliki potensi pendidikan yang baik, minat belajar bahasa Inggris di kalangan masyarakat masih rendah akibat anggapan bahwa bahasa Inggris sulit dipelajari. Permasalahan ini diperparah oleh kurangnya sumber daya manusia yang mendukung pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan ini mencakup sosialisasi, pelatihan tutor, penerapan teknologi, pendampingan, dan evaluasi. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan selama 6 hari, pada 23-Bulan Juni 2025 di Sekolah MI Plus Annur. Kegiatan dimulai dengan sosialisasi kepada peserta, orang tua, dan guru untuk menjelaskan tujuan dan manfaat program. Pelatihan dilakukan untuk memastikan tutor memiliki keterampilan yang diperlukan untuk mengajar dengan metode yang efektif. Penerapan teknologi termasuk penggunaan aplikasi pembelajaran interaktif, serta aktivitas seperti "Listen and Say," "Listen and Do," dan "Listen and Repeat," memberikan pengalaman belajar yang menarik. Hasil dari kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam keterampilan bahasa Inggris peserta, baik dalam kosakata, keterampilan menyimak maupun keterampilan berbicara. Evaluasi yang dilakukan di akhir program menunjukkan bahwa peserta merasa lebih percaya diri dalam menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Pembahasan mengungkapkan pentingnya keberlanjutan program agar metode yang telah diajarkan dapat terus diimplementasikan dalam pembelajaran reguler dan ekstrakurikuler. Oleh karena itu, disarankan agar kegiatan serupa diadakan secara berkelanjutan, dengan melibatkan orang tua dan masyarakat untuk mendukung penguasaan bahasa Inggris pelajar di Desa Manggari.

Abstract

This study aimed to conduct a need analysis to examine the non-EFL students’ needs of English subject in university. This needs analysis covers English in general and in particular needed by the students. A quantitative research method was followed in the present study. Data was collected by using questionnaires. The items in the questionnaires addressed various issues; in other words, the emphasis was determining students’ lacks, wants and necessity on English subject. All new non-EFL undergraduate students at Kuningan University in academic year 2021/2022 involved in this study. They are from five different faculties; Faculty of Economy, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Faculty of Computer, Faculty of Law and Faculty of Forestry. Based on the results of questionnaires filled out by 421 students, it is known that, first, in relation to students’ lack on English subject, this study focuses on the competence of language skills and students' difficulties in mastering the four English skills. Most students assessed their English language skills competence at moderate level. Listening and speaking skills are assessed as the first priority followed by writing and reading skills. However, the research findings also show that speaking skills seem to be the most difficult skills for them apart from weak grammar and low vocabulary mastery. Second, related to the students’ wants on English subject, the preferred language skills are reading followed by speaking, listening and writing. Third, related to necessity on English subject, learning activities that students need to function effectively is to combine English and Indonesian as a medium in delivering material. Most students also think that learning English is better in large groups under the supervision of lecturers. Furthermore, feedback, revision, and reflection are very important aspects for developing the ability to self-regulate learning. Therefore, students prefer to be corrected immediately by the lecturer when they make mistakes. To achieve learning effectiveness, students also expect the integration of a variety of activities and the development of learning materials.

Abstract

ABSTRAKDalam konsep kurikulum merdeka, pembelajaran bahasa asing diarahkan untuk membekali siswa dengan kemampuan berkomunikasi yang relevan dengan kebutuhan dunia kerja dan Masyarakat. Penggunaan media untuk membantu meningkatkan literasi masyarakat menjadi salah satu solusi yang perlu diperhatikan. Dengan demikian diperlukan adanya media pembelajaran pendukung untuk meningkatkan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris dengan tema budaya kearifan lokal yaitu budaya Kabupaten Kuningan. Oleh karena itu, pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini penulis mempunyai satu gagasan kreatif untuk mendukung kegiatan belajar masyarakat yang sedang menempuh pendidikan pada jenjang sekolah menengah atas melalui pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris berbasis aplikasi web. Media pendukung yang dipakai adalah sebuah media pembelajaran berbasis website dengan nama KAMUSKUN (KAMUS KUNINGAN) yang memuat materi bahasa Inggris seperti reading, listening, speaking dan vocabulary bertemakan kebudayaan lokal Kabupaten Kuningan. KAMUSKUN disusun dan dikembangkan oleh tim, sehingga penulis dapat mengembangkan materi yang termuat dalam website tersebut sesuai dengan kondisi di lapangan. KAMUSKUN dapat diakses pada  https://kamuskun-6k1d.glide.page/dl/3b1bc8. Berdasarkan hasil angket dapat diketahhui bahwa respon siswa terhadap penggunaan Kamuskun ada pada tingkatan baik, sehingga menjadi motivasi tim untuk senantiasa mengembangkan website Kamuskun. ABSTRACTIn the concept of kurikulum merdeka, foreign language learning is directed towards equipping students with relevant communication skills for the needs of the workforce and the community. One of the way to improve communities literacy skills is the implementation of media. Therefore, there is a need for supporting learning media to enhance English language proficiency with a theme of local wisdom, which is the culture of Kuningan District. Consequently, in this community service activity, the author has a creative idea to support the learning activities of individuals who are pursuing education at the high school level through English language learning based on a web application. The supporting medium used is a web-based learning platform called "KAMUSKUN" (KUNINGAN DICTIONARY), which contains English language materials such as reading, listening, speaking, and vocabulary related to the local culture of Kuningan District. "KAMUSKUN" is compiled and developed by a team, allowing the author to expand the website's content to suit the conditions in the field. "KAMUSKUN" can be accessed at https://kamuskun-6k1d.glide.page/dl/3b1bc8. The finding shows that students' responses to using Kamuskun are at a good level, so this is the motivation for the team to continue developing the Kamuskun website.

Abstract

The textual meta function is about the verbal world, especially the flow of information in a text, and is concerned with clauses as messages. In each meta function an analysis of a clause gives a different kind of structure composed from a different set of elements. The aim of this study was to analyze and identify the functions took from three different online newspapers, Jakarta Post, Jakarta Globe, and Tempo, with the context of educational news on the topic, "Merdeka Belajar Curriculum". This study used a qualitative approach as its methodology. The data was taken from the websites of Jakarta Post, Jakarta Globe, and Tempo. A functional English grammar was employed to analyze the data. Based on the study's findings, it identified three themes present in the Jakarta Post, Jakarta Globe, and Tempo: topical, interpersonal, and textual. Topical theme consisted of 43.5% of the article is unmarked theme and 16.5% marked theme. Interpersonal theme consisted of 3% of the article is modal adjunct, 4% is vocatives, and 6.5% is finite. Textual theme consisted of 2% of the article is conjunctive adjunct and 24.5% is conjunctions. The result is that in online newspapers related to education, topical themes are more prevalent, whereas interpersonal themes are less common. The function of Theme-Rheme used on educational news has a different definition for each type. In the findings, topical themes are more prevalent in the news. The topical theme used a simple structure so the article can be understood. However, the percentage of each type is different between the three newspapers, the effectiveness of each media in conveying information based on its advantages and disadvantages is constant

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the politeness strategies used by Taylor Swift and Paul Rudd in the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon YouTube videos "Taylor Swift Talk RecordBreaking Midnight Album, Music Video Cameos and Easter Eggs" and "Paul Rudd Compares His Men's Health Shoot with Jonathan Majors' (Extended)" when they decide to use particular politeness strategies in communication. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method using an observational data collecting technique is applied to analyze the speakers' manner politeness strategies affect the communication between the speaker and hearer. Data collected from observation were analyzed using discourse analysis interpretation and were classified regarding the Brown and Levinson (1987) theory. This research found that the speakers both of Taylor and Paul prevalence the positive politeness strategy when they communicating in Jimmy Fallon’s show. the positive politeness strategy that appeared in Taylor Swift that she is usually showing exaggerate (interest approval, sympathy with Hearer) while Paul Rudd deals with his character who really like making a joke almost in the whole conversation. Besides, the differences also followed by the second strategies that revealed by Taylor and Paul. Taylor Swift commonly chosen negative politeness strategy and Paul Rudd deals with off-record politeness strategy

Abstract

This research aimed to find out what kind of the strategies that tutor used in speaking class to TEYL and to know students’ attitude toward the implementation of the strategies. The researcher used mixed method by analyzing the data that has been collected from 3 research instruments, which were observation, interview, and questionnaire. This subject of the research consists of an English tutor and 6 students of the fifth grades in Fun English Course. The research findings revealed that the tutor used four types of strategies in the speaking class, as outlined by Thornbury (2005), those strategies are (1) Cooperative Activities, (2) Creative Task, (3) Role-play and Simulations, and (4) Drilling. Regarding the students' attitudes towards the tutor's implementation of these strategies, based on Wenden’s (1991) classification of attitudes into cognitive, affective, and behavioural components, the results of each component indicated a positive level in students’ attitude with an average score of 4.50. This suggests that the tutor’ strategies was successful in fostering a positive attitude among the students, which makes students feel comfortable when they are learning, improving their pronunciation and make them more confident to speaking English in front of the class, especially during speaking class sessions.

Abstract

Kemampuan berbicara (speaking) dalam bahasa Inggris merupakan salah satu kompetensi penting yang harus dimiliki guru sekolah dasar dalam menghadapi tantangan globalisasi dan penerapan kurikulum yang menekankan keterampilan berbahasa asing. Namun, fakta di lapangan menunjukkan bahwa banyak guru SD masih mengalami kesulitan dalam aspek speaking, baik dari segi penguasaan kosakata, pengucapan, maupun kepercayaan diri ketika berkomunikasi. Oleh karena itu, kegiatan pelatihan ini dilaksanakan sebagai bentuk pengabdian masyarakat untuk meningkatkan kemampuan speaking guru SD melalui metode komunikatif dan praktik langsung. Kegiatan dilaksanakan di desa Purwawinangun, Kabupaten Kuningan pada bulan Juli 2025 dengan melibatkan guru-guru dari berbagai sekolah dasar. Metode pelatihan meliputi ceramah interaktif, role play, peer teaching, dan evaluasi berbasis performa. Hasil menunjukkan adanya peningkatan kemampuan speaking guru sebesar 78% berdasarkan hasil pre-test dan post-test. Selain itu, peserta menunjukkan peningkatan motivasi dan percaya diri dalam menggunakan bahasa Inggris di kelas. Disimpulkan bahwa pelatihan ini efektif dalam meningkatkan keterampilan speaking guru SD dan direkomendasikan untuk dilaksanakan secara berkelanjutan.
