Abstract

Abstract:  Complimenting as a speech event has been one of the major areas on which linguists have focused their attention and drawn insights into the phenomenon of linguistic politeness in the last two decades (Zanrong 2004).  Some previous research – among others are by Davis (2008); Heidari (2009); Matsuoka (2009) – revealed that gender give rise variations of strategies on compliment responses (CR). This paper examines Sundanese women responses to compliments on appearance addressed by the same and different gender.  The research applied Naturalized Role Play method in collecting the data by observing the way of 68 women giving response to the compliment addressed on their physical appearance. The respondents were native Sundanese women living around Bandung.  The study found that most women respond differently to compliments addressed to them by women and by men.  This study also reveals that most of them considered the compliments – particularly when addressed by men – as a way of either maintaining social hospitalities or joking, and thus, the speech acts of compliments appear more to be a way of consolidating solidarity among them. Abstract

Looking at the potential for the development of the Wiyono and Sungai Langka tourist villages, the objectives of this activity are: 1) to train the community in compiling and packaging tourism package products; 2) train professional tour guides; 3) train homestay management. Methods The implementation of the activity is a participatory approach with lecture, discussion and direct practice methods. The result of this activity is an increase in the knowledge and ability of the community in the development of tourist villages. This increase is seen from the product components that have been identified to be included in the tour packages to be marketed, the list of names of people who are ready to become tour guides and ready to be certified for competence, as well as the existence of residents' homes that are ready to be managed into homestays as places for tourists to live. visit

Abstract

Pengembangan kurikulum membutuhkan analisis situasional guna memperhitungkan faktor-faktor eksternal yang dapat menentukan dalam pengembangan, evaluasi dan penerapan kurikulum tersebut.  Salah satu faktor ekternal yang penting dalam pengembangan kurikulum adalah faktor orangtua siswa yang merupakan bagian dari faktor sosial pengembangan kurikulum.  Penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk mengetahui harapan-harapan orang tua dari siswa-siswi yang belajar pada tingkat dasar (SD) guna pengembangan dan pengaplikasian kurikulum bahasa Inggris pada tingkat tersebut.  Penelitian ini dilakukan pada dua lembaga kursus penyelenggara pendidikan bahasa inggris pra-sekolah di Bandar Lampung.  Data dalam penelitian ini diperoleh melalui interview dan kuesioner dengan melibatkan 23 orangtua siswa sebagai responden.  Hasil penelitian ini mengindikasikan bahwa orangtua merupakan faktor yang mampu memberi kontribusi penting bagi pengembangan kurikulum tersebut.  Responden memberikan sejumlah harapan-harapan yang perlu diakomodasi terkait muatan, pengaplikasian dan pengevaluasian hingga penerapan kurikulum bahasa inggris pra sekolah. Kata kunci: faktor orang tua, pengajaran bahasa inggris tingkat dasar, pengembangan  kurikulum

Abstract

Penelitian ini menelaah kemampuan guru sekolah menengah atas di Bandar Lampung dalam menulis wacana eksposisi. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain studi kasus deskriptif kualitatif  dengan data berupa wacana-wacana eksposisi Analitikal dan Hortatori yang ditulis oleh para guru yang dianalisis dengan pendekatan Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) dan dikemudian divalidasi melalui interview. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sebagian dari para guru telah mampu menulis menggunakan strategi yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan wacana.  Para guru telah memahami struktur generik wacana guna mencapai tujuan dan fungsi wacana eksposisi. Analisis gramatika pada wacana menunjukkan bahwa para guru telah mampu menyampaikan makna ideasional, tekstual dan interpersonal melalui wacana tertulis.  Hal tersebut ditunjukan dalam bentuk penggunaan fitur pengembangan tema (thematic progression) berupa pola tema zigzag, reiterasi tema dan pengembangan tema bertingkat (multy-layer Theme development), fungsi konjungsi, variasi bentuk kata kerja (process type), bentukan fungsi sirkumstansial, bentukan nominalisasi, penggunaan mudalisasi dan modulasi dalam  wacana serta penggunaan referensi pronomina (pronoun referent) dalam wacana.  Namun penelitian ini juga menunjukkan bahwa tidak semua guru mampu mengembangkan argumentasi dalam wacana tulis dengan baik yang ditunjukkan dengan kurangnya penggunaan fakta dan bukti yang obyektif dalam wacana, ketidakpastian pendapat, tidak adanya penggunaan fitur dialogis antar wacana (intertextuality), penerapan bentukan kalimat perintah (imperative) dan pernyataan realis serta sejumlah kesalahan (errors) dalam tataran tata bahasa (syntax).  Hal ini disebabkan beberapa hal seperti kurangnya pemahaman guru dalam pengembangan wacana berbasis genre (Genre Based Approach/(GBA)) dan Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) yang telah menjadi bagian dari kurikulum pendidikan bahasa Inggeris di Indonesia, juga kemampuan professional berbahasa guru (professional competence), dan kurangnya motivasi dan komitmen dalam menulis.   Kata kunci: Systemic Functional Lingistics (SFL), kemampuan  menulis wacana eksposisi

Abstract

It is believed that without the evaluation it would be almost impossible to teach. As students need to know their abilities, teachers use some kind of evaluations. Evaluation of teaching learning process can be administrated in the form of tests. In other words teaching must be followed by testing. The information gained can be useful for both students and teacher. Hence there are two points interrelated. Firstly, the test is concerned with the teaching that has taken place. It is that the test administered should give the students feeling that the teacher’s evaluation matches what they have taught and sense of accomplishment. Secondly, the teaching is concerned with the test. The teacher can diagnose his effort in his teaching whether or not his teaching has been effective. Madsen (1987) pointed out that the criteria of a good test comprise: (1) validity, (2) reliability, (3) difficulty level, and (4) discrimination power. This research was to know and describe quality of semester II English test for the students of The State Polytechnic of Lampung (Polinela) in the year 2006. The study showed that the Semester II English Test administered for the students did not meet the expected level of validity, reliability, level of difficulty nor discrimination power of a good test. Key words: evaluation, validity, reliability, difficulty level, discrimination power.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the lack of students' ability to express their opinions in public, especially in Indonesian language courses. Apart from that, students did not achieve the expected competency at each meeting. Based on the background of the problem, the causes of students' lack of ability to speak in public were formulated. Is there a contribution between self-confidence and motivation and students' public speaking abilities? This research uses descriptive-correlational research methods. The subjects of this research were Lampung State Polytechnic students taking Indonesian language courses. The sample of this research was 60 students. The data in this research was taken using questionnaire and interview techniques. Hypothesis testing is carried out using simple and multiple linear regression formulas. Based on the results of data analysis, the results of multiple regression analysis of variables X1 and Variable X2 with variable Y. value T-table self-confidence and motivation 6.23 and 5.12. The significance level is 0.000 and the t table is 1.98, this means tcount > ttable so Ha is accepted, meaning the regression coefficient is significant. Thus, it can be concluded that there is a significant contribution to self-confidence and motivation.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kondisi psikologis tokoh Jefferson Hope dalam novel A Study in Scarlet karya Sir Arthur Conan Doyle melalui pendekatan teori psikoanalitik Sigmund Freud, khususnya konsep mourning dan melancholia. Tokoh Jefferson Hope digambarkan mengalami kehilangan yang mendalam atas kematian Lucy Ferrier, wanita yang dicintainya, yang kemudian memicu transformasi emosional dari duka biasa (mourning) menjadi melancholia, yaitu suatu kondisi neurosis yang ditandai dengan depresi menahun, identifikasi diri yang terikat pada objek cinta yang hilang, serta munculnya dorongan destruktif. Dalam kerangka teori Freud, melancholia terjadi ketika individu gagal menggantikan libidinal cathexis yang hilang, sehingga libido yang tidak tersalurkan berbalik ke dalam dan menguasai ego, menyebabkan perasaan kehilangan diri (ego-loss) dan agresi terhadap diri maupun orang lain. Analisis menunjukkan bahwa Hope mengalami resistensi terhadap proses kedukaan, di mana cintanya terhadap Lucy tidak hanya menjadi dasar identitas emosionalnya, tetapi juga berubah menjadi obsesi balas dendam yang mendominasi seluruh kepribadiannya. Dorongan destruktif tersebut, yang diwujudkan melalui pembunuhan terhadap Enoch Drebber dan John Stangerson, merupakan manifestasi dari konflik batin antara id, ego, dan super-ego yang tidak seimbang, dengan super-ego yang bersifat represif dan destruktif. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa Hope merupakan representasi sastra dari individu yang terperangkap dalam melancholia, di mana kegagalan dalam proses sublimasi cinta dan duka mengantarkan pada kehancuran diri dan tindakan kekerasan. Studi ini memberikan kontribusi dalam memahami dinamika trauma, memori, dan gangguan psikis dalam karya sastra melalui lensa psikoanalisis.

Abstract

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, a young adult novel by Holly Jackson, presents a compelling narrative of mystery while offering extensive opportunities to explore social and psychological dynamics through its main character. This study investigates the potential of the novel as a pedagogical tool by bridging young adult fiction and learning theories; analyzing how the protagonist, Pippa Fitz-Amobi, embodies Albert Bandura’s social cognitive theory. The research proposes fresh insights into their integration. Through the examination of personal agency, this study reveals how Pip’s agency shapes her decision-making and resilience in navigating complex situations. The findings highlight the effectiveness of young adult literature in illustrating fundamental learning principles, offering a modeling personal agency for its young readers.
