Abstract

Sisingamangaraja, Lampulo, Kota Banda Aceh, Provinsi Aceh.

Abstract

Architectural education has an essential role in shaping the mindset of students that impacts the ability of conceptualization in the design process. As the core subject, Architectural Design Studio (ADS) influences the students, particularly in terms of design. Being the architect candidate, the student is encouraged to elaborate on local-cultural values in their design, so that, the student will design a building that reflects a specific region and become the image of the place. Incorporating cultural values into the ADS assignment is one effective way to encourage students elaborate and design the built environment with a cultural approach. This research aims to see students’ competence in elaborating local-cultural values in their design and to assess the quality of cultural values implementation in ADS 5 assignment of Architecture Department Universitas Islam Negeri Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh’s student. The research method is descriptive and qualitative. The participant in this study is a student enrolled in ADS 5 during the 2018/2019 semester. The student design projects as the main data are analyzed using a semiotic analysis approach. The result indicates that the characteristic of the stilt house and the characteristic triangle-shaped are the most frequently applied characteristic of the student design.

Abstract

Abstract

Rumoh aceh is a Acehnese traditional house which is one of the products and artifacts of the Acehnese culture. Efforts to preserve rumoh aceh often focus on physical aspects or aspects of form that are seen directly. This has led to the discovery of many new buildings that adopt the architectural form of rumoh aceh directly without a more comprehensive elaboration and transformation process. A concerted effort is required to present rumoh aceh architecture in a modern context. Transformation is one of the methods in architectural design to be able to present new ideas that are creative and innovative. The transformation in this paper is obtained through an encoding process that employs a semiotic approach as a method for bridging the rumoh aceh architecture transformation process. The encoding process is carried out by reinterpreting the values of rumoh aceh architecture obtained from previous research. The aim of this paper is to gain knowledge regarding the architectural design process that can present a creation that represents regional culture, in this case to present rumoh aceh architecture in a modern context.

Abstract

Vernacular architecture in seismic-prone regions often reflects generations of  knowledge embedded in local building practices. This knowledge contributes significantly to the earthquake resilience of traditional structures through context-specific design strategies and materials. This study presents a systematic literature review to identify the critical factors that influence the seismic resistance of vernacular buildings. A summative content analysis method was employed, emphasizing the elements that affect the seismic performance of these structures. The review identifies six key factors contributing to the earthquake resistance of vernacular buildings, categorized into two primary domains: explicit knowledge, which includes building typology, structural systems, construction methods, and building materials, and implicit knowledge, encompassing community involvement and risk management. The findings underscore the significance of local architectural knowledge as a fundamental basis for developing more effective and sustainable construction strategies to enhance earthquake resilience in earthquake-prone areas.
