Abstract

The abundance of information in text and visual formats poses challenges for learners in effectively understanding and utilizing it. This study investigated the role of infographic writing, facilitated by the Canva application, in enhancing English language learning at Institut Ilmu Sosial dan Manajemen STIAMI. Specifically, it examined how infographic creation supports the development of persuasive writing skills, drawing on Victor Schwab’s Writing Theory, which identifies five essential elements: grabbing attention, showing benefits, providing proof, convincing, and calling to action. Using a descriptive case study method, the research analyzed 82 student-created infographics from the English class in the Business Administration study program. The methodology included evaluating the infographics against Schwab’s criteria and assessing their alignment with the Semester Learning Plan (RPS) to determine whether learning outcomes matched the instructional objectives. The findings revealed that while infographic writing offers potential for enhancing visual and linguistic competencies, most infographics did not meet all five criteria of Schwab’s persuasive writing framework. Common deficiencies included weak attention-grabbing elements and insufficient proof or calls to action. Furthermore, the analysis showed misalignment between the expected learning outcomes in the RPS and the actual results, particularly in terms of text structure and linguistic precision. These gaps highlighted the need for clearer instructional guidelines and targeted teaching strategies to help students effectively integrate persuasive writing principles into infographic design. This study underscored the importance of aligning pedagogical tools like infographics with established learning goals to maximize their impact on English language acquisition.

Abstract

The use of relevant and concise wording in infographics is crucial to ensure that the information presented can be quickly and effectively understood by readers. However, existing infographics still need to strike a balance between information density and clarity of delivery. This study explores the relevance of words and meaning in student-created infographics, using Sperber & Wilson’s Relevance Theory (1986, 1995) as a framework. By analyzing three student-created infographics, the study identified the main structural elements of infographics: description (general overview), details (specific information), and significance (practical value). It also examined audience intentions, categorized as either informative or communicative. The results revealed that the "significance" element dominated all the infographics, underscoring the importance of the practical value and relevance of the information presented. Audiences were more likely to engage with infographics they found informative, although a balance between informative and communicative aspects—such as seen in Infographic 1—yielded optimal impact on audience comprehension and engagement. This study highlighted the importance of infographic design that emphasized word and meaning relevance to create effective communication. Recommendations are provided for more strategically integrating communicative elements to enhance the appeal and effectiveness of infographics in various communication contexts. Abstract

This study aimed to explore the impact of infographics on cognitive enhancement in English Language students. Infographics, as a visual medium that combines text and images, are believed to simplify the understanding of complex concepts and improve long-term memory retention. This research adopted a quantitative approach with a field experiment involving two groups of students: an experimental group taught using infographics and a control group taught with conventional methods. Data were collected through cognitive tests before and after the intervention, as well as surveys measuring students’ perceptions of infographics. The results showed that the use of infographics significantly enhances students' understanding of concepts and memory retention in English courses. These findings supported the hypothesis that visual media, such as infographics, can be an effective tool for enhancing cognition in students, particularly in the context of English education. The study also highlighted the importance of integrating visual technologies in learning to stimulate more active and in-depth cognitive interaction.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover the ideology embedded in the folk tale scrapbook of Timun Mas and Buto Ijo through the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach based on Norman Fairclough's model. Folk tales, as a form of cultural narrative, not only convey moral messages but also represent social constructions, power relations, and ideological values that exist within society. Using Fairclough's three-dimensional analysis (text, discourse practice, and social practice), this research explores how the visuals and narrative in the scrapbook reflect and reproduce certain ideologies, such as the relationship between power and bravery, the representation of female characters, and moral antagonism. The analysis results show that the text structure and visual elements in the scrapbook contribute to a re-interpretation of gender roles, power dominance, and resistance through the symbolism of the Timun Mas character. This study emphasizes the importance of a critical reading of culture-based learning media in revealing the hidden ideologies that shape the way young people think. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Folk Tale, Fairclough, Ideology, scrapbook, Timun Mas
