Abstract

Five dimensions of Online Learning Readiness Scale (OLRS) offers convincing quantification of online students’ readiness. Its modification, the addition of two more dimension, is even claimed to be applicable for blended learning environment. Nonetheless, quality of modified OLRS is questionable. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to assure the quality of OLRS after the modification. In order to do so, empirical validity and internal consistency testing were conducted. 42 participants were included for the testing. The result showed that there are four items which needs special attention. The reliability value is also slightly decreased, from .85 to .74. The value is not ideal, but still widely acceptable for research usage. In short, the OLRS modification insignificantly reduces the quality of its psychometric properties. Further research is recommended by the author to focus on reformulating the items in order to enhance its empirical validity and reliability simultaneously, or conducting other statistical test to maintain the quality of OLRS.

Abstract

Although there have been several research attempts to identify the relationship between reading and writing skills, most of them do not address the students' creativity, mainly in Indonesian university students' context and online learning setting. This quantitative study intends to investigate the students' creativity level and the impact of students' creativity and reading on their writing skills. One hundred students completed a creativity questionnaire and online reading and writing test. Creativity styles questionnaire, reading comprehension test, and a story writing test were used to collect data. Descriptive statistics, ANCOVA, and linear regression methods were used to analyze the data. The results indicate that generally, students' creativity is high. The results also suggest a significant difference between female and male students' creativity. Furthermore, both creativity and reading ability were statistically significant to predict writing ability with the creativity scale a higher beta value than the reading scale. It can be concluded that creativity and reading ability influence students writing ability. The finding contributes to knowledge on the influential roles of creativity and reading in writing.

Abstract

In the literature, it is believed that question is an integral part of education. However, the studies on questions used by teachers in all education levels are mainly conducted on typical development students. Studies on how teachers use English questions to enhance communication and learning outcomes of students with special needs are still limited. The aims of this study is to analyze how teachers in a bilingual school expose English as a second language and customize the questions to elementary students with special needs. This study used Stake's instrumental case study method. The data were collected by having observation in the special need classroom twice a week for four months. The subject of this study are two teachers from a bilingual school were observed during lessons and individually interviewed. The data is analyzed and encoded anonymized. Then the code is evaluated to identify potential themes to learn more about the important types and considerations of asking strategies for students with special needs. According to the thematic analysis, these teachers employed questions that prioritized two factors: cognitive-based questions and affective-based questions. The study underlines the implications for classroom practice while expanding the understanding of teaching English to special needs students in a bilingual setting.

Abstract

This study is about the effect of rationale application usage as innovative learning application to help the students being critical thinker in writing argumentative text. It was attempted to investigate (1) whether there is any significant difference between students reasoning ability, (2) whether there is any significant difference between students structuring ability, and (3) whether there is any significant difference between students analyzing ability who are taught by using rationale application as found in their argumentative writing and those who are not taught without using rationale. To do so, a quasi-experimental designed was administered to a sample of University students (N=50). In order to answer the research questions, the data are analyzed by using independent sample t-test. SPSS 21 is used to do those statistical analysis. In conclusion, the findings showed that rationale application can be chosen as an alternative media of improving critical thinking in argumentative writing. It was proved by the findings of the study that bring us to the point that there was a significant difference on the students critical thinking in some aspects (reasoning, structuring and analyzing ability) as found in their argumentative writing between learners in experimental and control group. Learners who are given rationale application treatment achieve higher than those who are given conventional method.
