Abstract

This study examines the processing of wild honey (Apis dorsata) as a means to increase the income of the community, particularly the honey processors in Kobisonta Village, East Seram Seti District, Central Maluku Regency. The research then develops strategies for further development. The method used in this study is a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative research. The qualitative research uses descriptive analysis, while the quantitative research employs multiple linear regression analysis to predict the effect of independent variables on the dependent variable and SWOT analysis to develop strategies for increasing the income of honey processors. The results of the study indicate that, partially, the variables of education, business duration, and capital have a significant impact, with a significance value of sig = 0.000 < 0.05. However, the number of dependents has little effect. Simultaneously, all four variables are significant, with a significance value of sig = 0.000 < 0.05. Based on the strategies developed using the SWOT model, several strategies were identified: for the S-O strategy, enhancing the production of higher-quality honey, pioneering new marketing areas, and increasing production volume; for the W-O strategy, providing guidance and honey processing technology, establishing institutions, securing government support, and promoting appropriate innovations; for the S-T strategy, building consumer confidence and support, forming partnerships, and establishing regulations by the government and other promotional agents; and for the T-W strategy, restoring and reforesting areas and ensuring hygienic product packaging.

Abstract

The book "Geography of Health: Applications of Science and Learning" contains ideas, thoughts, concepts, and several research findings that, when integrated and implemented, have given birth to and justified the emergence of health geography, which has so far developed only at the level of academic discussion. This book was created amidst the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has had a domino effect globally, impacting individuals, groups, and nations alike. The method used in the book is a book review. This review includes a synopsis, a brief overview of the book with citations, an analysis of the book's strengths and weaknesses, and recommendations. "Geography of Health: Applications of Science and Learning" consists of six chapters. The introductory section discusses the concept of geography as a study of the geosphere, introduces the Maluku region as an archipelago with a predominance of small islands, addresses the issues of small islands and the urgency of solving them, discusses the position of health geography in the curriculum of the Geography Education Program at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at Pattimura University, and explores the application of geographical science and learning in the health field with two research studies related to environment-associated diseases (Soil-Transmitted Helminths and Early Warning for Malaria Outbreaks).

Abstract

The management of small islands in border areas, especially those bordering neighboring countries, is carried out to maintain the integrity of the Republic of Indonesia, safeguard national defense and security, improve the welfare of local communities, and develop business opportunities through bilateral cooperation. Another urgent consideration is the complex biogeophysical characteristics of small islands. As mentioned by Agus Dermawan in his presentation, these biogeophysical characteristics include: a) Being separated from the mainland, making them insular; b) Lacking a hinterland and being close to the coast; c) Unable to influence marine hydroclimate; d) Having small catchment areas; e) Limited freshwater sources, catchment areas, and food crops; f) The existence of small islands is influenced by coral reef ecosystems, mangrove forests, and seagrass beds; g) They are highly vulnerable to climate change, both natural and human-induced. Addressing the challenges of coastal areas and small islands from a geographical approach involves the availability of fast, accurate, and objective data. Data is crucial in determining the direction and strategy of policies in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive development, particularly for small islands. To meet these needs, the Geography Education Program at Pattimura University and its graduates, including stakeholders, can prioritize several career and policy fields in the era of Industry 4.0, digital transformation, and Society 5.0. These fields include: 1. Satellite imagery and remote sensing analysis; 2. Map production: remote sensing results and satellite image processing; 3. Urban spatial planning analysts, planners, and surveyors; 4. Transportation sector analysts and workers; 5. Edupreneurship; 6. Environmental management; 7. Private sector roles; 8. Disaster management; 9. Tour guides; 10. Environmental destination journalism

Abstract

Indonesia is facing a severe issue of child malnutrition with high rates of stunting among toddlers, particularly in coastal areas like Pulau Osi Maluku. Stunting is caused by inadequate nutritional intake over a long period. The prevalence of stunting in Indonesia remains high, although it is decreasing. Preventive efforts include promoting the habit of eating vegetables, providing health education to parents, and developing hydroponics as a solution for vegetable supply in areas with limited land. Education and collaboration between the government and the community are crucial in addressing stunting and improving the quality of life for children in coastal areas. The research was conducted in Pulau Osi Hamlet, Maluku, using purposive sampling with mothers as subjects. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, utilizing both primary and secondary data. Data collection was carried out through interviews, observations, and documentation. Data analysis was done using qualitative methods to describe the research findings systematically. In Pulau Osi Hamlet, efforts to combat stunting and meet vegetable needs were undertaken through education using the PBL (Problem-Based Learning) method, involving 35 participants. Vegetable consumption patterns varied and were influenced by knowledge, education, and the availability of vegetables. Land and supply limitations posed challenges. The hydroponic solution increased vegetable availability, diversified food options, and promoted community self-sufficiency. Collaboration between the government and the community was vital. The results were evident from the healthy growth of vegetable plants and successful harvests. This initiative successfully improved knowledge, self-sufficiency, and food security in Pulau Osi Hamlet, helping to address stunting and improve vegetable consumption patterns.

Abstract

Stunting is a serious issue in developing countries like Indonesia, resulting from inadequate nutritional intake and impacting children's physical and cognitive growth. The 2022 Indonesian Health Survey recorded a stunting rate of 21.6%, with the highest prevalence found in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), West Sulawesi, West Papua, and West Nusa Tenggara, while Bali had the lowest prevalence at around 8%. Stunting is not only a physical issue but also affects children's cognitive development, necessitating serious education and intervention. Coastal areas and small islands, including Osi Island in West Seram, are particularly vulnerable to this issue. The research was conducted using various data collection techniques such as questionnaires, interviews, observations, and documentation and was analyzed using descriptive qualitative methods. The findings indicate an increased community understanding of parasitic infections, greater awareness of environmental sanitation, changes in personal hygiene behaviour, and the use of local deworming medications. This increased knowledge forms the basis for prevention efforts, with a better understanding of parasitic infection causes, symptoms, and risks.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal the system and management of the Batu Merah Public Cemetery (TPU) in Ambon City, assess the condition of the road distribution in the Batu Merah TPU, and formulate strategies for managing the Batu Merah TPU in Ambon City. The research uses a qualitative descriptive method. The research variables include the principles of public cemetery arrangement as explained by Hutauruk (2010), involving key components such as: 1) Burial Plots (Space Arrangement, Identification, and Numbering), 2) Vegetation Elements (Gardens, Trees, and Plant Selection), 3) Pedestrian Paths (Accessibility and Lighting). Data collection methods in this study are observation, interviews, and documentation. The population in this research context refers to all objects related to the research problem. The population includes all individual cases and various phenomena within the Kebun Cengkeh TPU area. This includes the TPU management structure, existing graves, and the surrounding community associated with the public cemetery. A well-managed Public Cemetery (TPU) will have a positive impact on the community by fulfilling the need for burial spaces. Conversely, if the TPU is not well-organized and managed, it can have negative impacts such as environmental pollution. In Ambon City, the TPU can no longer accommodate more burials. The Ambon City Government needs to immediately realize the provision of new land and manage the TPU well so that community needs are met and social issues do not arise. The Ambon City Government also needs to establish Regional Regulations on the Arrangement and Management of Public Cemeteries to serve as official guidelines in managing TPUs in the city

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze waste management in Masnana Village, Namrole District, South Buru Regency. The main focus of the research is the behavior of the community in managing waste and the stages of waste management from generation to final disposal. Data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The results show that the main sources of waste in Masnana Village come from households, restaurants, schools, and lodging, as well as natural factors and human activities. Waste generation is measured by weight and volume per person per day, with an average waste weight of 0.35 kg and volume of 25 liters per person per day. The types of waste produced are divided into organic and inorganic waste, with the majority of organic waste still being burned (73.33%) and most inorganic waste also being burned (66.66%). On-site waste management involves the reuse of paint cans and beverage bottles. Waste collection is carried out to temporary disposal sites using a sorting bin system. Organic waste processing is carried out through composting, although many residents still prefer burning. Electronic waste is managed by selling, repairing, or burying it. Final disposal is handled by the Public Works Department to the Piyungan landfill. This study highlights the importance of community participation in waste management to reduce environmental impact and extend landfill life
