Abstract

This study examines the use of figurative language in Chapter 1 of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight novel with a focus on its narrative functions and stylistic significance. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the data were collected through documentation by identifying and classifying sentences containing figurative language in the selected chapter. The analysis reveals that metaphor, personification, hyperbole, and simile are the dominant figurative forms used by the author. Among these, metaphor appears most frequently and plays a crucial role in representing the protagonist’s emotional state, psychological tension, and sense of alienation. Personification contributes to the vivid portrayal of setting and atmosphere, while hyperbole intensifies emotional expression and simile clarifies imagery through explicit comparison. The findings demonstrate that figurative language is strategically integrated into the narrative structure to enhance meaning, emotional depth, and reader engagement. This study highlights the importance of stylistic analysis in understanding literary texts and emphasizes the relevance of figurative language studies for both literary criticism and translation research, particularly in the context of contemporary popular novels.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of code-switching in the film K-Pop Demon Hunters from a sociolinguistic perspective. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research examines the forms, social functions, and cultural meanings of code-switching found in the film’s dialogues and song lyrics. The data were collected through careful observation and transcription of utterances containing language alternation, which were then classified based on Poplack’s typology: tag-switching, intersentential switching, and intrasentential switching. The findings reveal that tag-switching is the most frequently occurring type, indicating a strong tendency to preserve Korean cultural terms within English-dominated discourse. Furthermore, code-switching functions not only as a communicative strategy but also as a means of expressing emotions, constructing character identity, and representing Korean cultural authenticity in a global media context. The study highlights how language choice in popular films reflects broader processes of cultural negotiation and globalization, positioning code-switching as a significant sociolinguistic phenomenon in contemporary audiovisual media.

Abstract

Humor serves as a communicative strategy that reflects cultural values and shapes interpersonal relationships. This study investigates verbal humor in Sundanese conversations through the lens of the Script-based Semantic Theory of Humor (SSTH). Using recorded and transcribed dialogues between Sundanese speakers, the analysis explores the presence of script oppositions and logical mechanisms that generate humorous effects. The findings reveal that humor in Sundanese discourse frequently emerges from incongruities between misfortune and reinterpretation, seriousness and absurdity, or reality and imagination. These humorous constructions function as tools for emotional relief, tension reduction, and the reinforcement of social solidarity. Furthermore, verbal humor reflects the cultural identity of the Sundanese people, emphasizing politeness, warmth, empathy, and indirectness. Rather than ridiculing others, Sundanese humor promotes harmony and collective well-being through laughter. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how linguistic creativity and cultural norms intersect in the construction of humor within local sociolinguistic contexts.
