The study is based on needs analysis, focusing on necessities and lacks by Waters (1987). By observation, the result shows that both of formal dialect (MSA) and informal dialect are necessary to learn in Arabic for tourism purposes (ASP), by special attention to Gulf Arabic and Egyptian Arabic. In other side, some of lacks is found which include non-language factors, such as education rules, subjects needed, and language factors, such as usage area. However, as long as the aim to be able to communicate in Arabic is reached, both of formal and informal dialects are though.

Abstract

Speaking is the most frequently used language competence for tourist guides. They use this competence in order to serve their guests optimally. This study aims to examine Arabic speaking competence of tourist guides in Puncak, West Java. This study uses a qualitative approach with various data collection techniques including participatory observation, indirect observation, and interviews with a number of key informants. The key informants in this research are tourist guides, tourist guide association committee, and tour operators in Puncak area. This study found that language acquisition methods affect the speaking competence of the tourist guide, which may increase over time depending on the intensity of interaction with tourists and language usage. These tourist guides show different levels of language proficiencies including grammar accuracy, different ability to avoid using slang, and involvement in various topics of conversation. Self-taught guides normally have limited abilities in almost all of the above indicators, while guides who studied Arabic either formally or semi-formally tend to be more competent although they cannot avoid using Arabic slang. Meanwhile, guides who learned Arabic from their interactions with native speakers tend to ignore grammar and language accuracy even though they are able to communicate effectively.

Abstract

This study compares the quality of Indonesian–Arabic academic translations produced by Google Translate and ChatGPT (GPT-4), a topic rarely examined despite widespread MT use in Arabic Language Education programs. Using a qualitative descriptive design with content analysis, the data comprised ten purposively selected undergraduate thesis titles from Indonesian university repositories, including UIN Sunan Kalijaga, UIN Suska Riau, UIN Imam Bonjol Padang, and Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar. Titles were selected for their academic rigor and need for conceptual precision and formal Arabic register. Translations were analyzed at the phrase level using a Hybrid MQM–Nababan–Baker rubric encompassing seven dimensions: accuracy, acceptability, readability, lexical equivalence, grammatical equivalence, cohesion and coherence, and academic fluency, each rated on a three-point scale. Validity was ensured through alignment with Arabic translation theory, equivalence frameworks, and MQM standards, while iterative consistency checks supported reliability. Results reveal clear differences. ChatGPT achieved an average score of 20.0 out of 21 points (93%), which is classified as Very Good and indicates strong suitability for academic publication. Google Translate scored 13.3 out of 21 points (63%), classified as Good, but requiring post-editing. ChatGPT excelled in contextual meaning, syntactic restructuring, accurate idhafah, case governance, consistent terminology, and scholarly style, whereas Google Translate showed literal transfer. This study enriches AI-assisted translation discourse by grounding evaluation in Arabic translation theory and pedagogy, emphasizing generative AI’s pedagogical potential as a complementary tool while reaffirming the indispensable role of human expertise in maintaining linguistic accuracy, rigor, and academic standards.

Abstract

Background: Low student learning outcomes in Islamic education are often attributed to traditional teaching methods that fail to actively engage students. Implementing interactive methods, such as Peer Group Teaching (peer tutoring), is expected to enhance student participation and mastery of Islamic education material. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the implementation of the Peer Group Teaching (peer tutoring) method in Islamic education subjects for Class VII students at SMPN 29 Oku and assess its impact on improving student learning outcomes. Method: This research adopted a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design, which included three cycles: pre-cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II. Each cycle involved planning, action implementation, observation, and analysis-reflection stages. The research subjects were Class VII students, and data were collected through competency tests and observations of group learning activities. Results: The findings indicate that the use of the Peer Group Teaching (peer tutoring) method improved student learning outcomes. Out of 30 students, 26 (87%) met the minimum competency criteria (KKM) of 77, surpassing the success indicator of 80%. However, 4 students (13%) had not yet achieved individual mastery. Conclusion: The Peer Group Teaching method is effective in enhancing Islamic education learning outcomes and fostering active student participation. Contribution: This study offers practical guidance for teachers on implementing peer-assisted learning to improve student engagement and achievement in Islamic education subjects.

Abstract

This research looks into the kinds of social media used in human rights activism in Indonesia. To analyze social media data, Nvivo 12Plus as a qualitative data analysis software is used. The findings show that: 1) The  social media content and related discussions on citizen’s rights are dominated by human rights content; 2) activists’ social media accounts are connected, and the relationship is strong, which can be seen in 0,7 Lower limit; 3) narration in social media spreads using the acronym HAM (Hak Asasi Manusia [Human Rights]). To strengthen similar research in this area, social media data might be combined with digital data like the online newspapers. In addition, the comparison with another case and/or another country may give new novelty of the research.

Abstract

This article aims to investigate and examine the relevance of Western civil society theory within non-Western civil society discourse and practice, particularly in the context of civil society in Indonesia. In Western civil society theory, there is an argument that dichotomizes the relationship between civil society and the state, asserting that civil society is a socially constructed institution that exists outside the involvement and domain of the state. Based on this dichotomy, civil society must possess the characteristics of autonomy, independence, and self-generating capacity. This article tests these propositions by using the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (WALHI) and the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) as case studies. To achieve this research objective, this study was conducted through in-depth interviews with activists, key figures, and former activists, as well as literature studies using official documents and related publications on WALHI and YLBHI. The findings reveal that applying Western civil society theory in Indonesia requires theoretical revision and modification, including the redefinition of civil society as a social group that may be established solely by society, or jointly by society and the state, with discourse and practical domains shaped by dynamic interactions with the state domain. As a result of this redefinition, it is found that, of the civil society criteria emphasized in Western theory, Indonesian civil society has successfully manifested the characteristic of autonomy, while still striving to realize the characteristics of independence and self-generating capacity. This condition is influenced by the intense interaction between accommodative state policies, international institutional involvement, and the participation of the communities they advocate for, all of which shape the dynamics of civil society’s growth and development in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study investigates the linguistic landscape in tourism spaces in Puncak, a popular tourist destination in West Java, Indonesia. It explores the diversity, distribution, and functions of languages used, as well as the reasons why this phenomenon occurred in this specific area, where people host tourists. Using a qualitative approach, this research examines language use in signs, advertisements, and public notices, revealing the socio-cultural and economic dynamics that shape language choices. Findings highlight the prominence of three languages: Indonesian, Arabic, and English, reflecting local identity, the influence of Middle Eastern tourists, and global tourism trends. The study also investigates how multilingualism, cultural identity, and the commodification of languages interact in tourism. By examining the symbolic and informational roles of language in public spaces, this research contributes to an understanding of sociolinguistic diversity in multicultural tourism settings. It offers insights for the development of inclusive language policies, especially in tourism spaces.
