Abstract

AbstractTranslating poetry in the distance learning ecosystem provides students the opportunity to learn through an online discussion forum called E-Learning. Students are given the task of translating poetry and leaving comments on the work of other students. This article compares three translations of the poem entitled "Air Mata Bunda". From the results of the translation, it was found that students had variations in the structure, procedural tendencies and ideology of translation poetry of Source Language (SL) to target language (TL). Word choice, aesthetic considerations, and cultural substitutions that are reflected in the translation can all cause variations in the translation. The researcher also discovered that there was still a low degree of engagement in e-learning, which encouraged the creation of a better framework for discussion, particularly when it came to practicing text translation. Keywords: translation, poetry, cultural substitution, and E-Learning

Abstract

This study aims to describe the syntactic scope of information boards found in self-cleaning (Malukat) temples in Gianyar, Bali. In addition, this study also examines the translation strategies of bilingual information boards (Indonesian and English). The method used in this research is a qualitative approach in order to describe the syntactic scope and translation strategies on the data in found in Tirta Empul Temple. The data analysis applies the theory of landscape linguistics proposed by Yendra and Artawa (2020) and is supported by several micro linguistics theories, as follows: 1) syntactic scope theory by Noortyani (2017), 2) translation strategy theory by Molina and Albir (2002), and 3) translation equivalence theory by Nida (2000). The results of this study show that the information boards in the temples have various syntactic scopes, namely in the form of phrases and sentences. However, it is dominantly found in the form of sentences. It is because the information conveyed on the boards is more detail and clearly presented so that they are easily understood by visitors. Meanwhile, the translation strategy of the public space signboard uses calque, literal, established equivalent, and reduction strategies. The literal translation strategy dominantly used on the public signs at the temples because it is easier to understand since it is translated word per word.

Abstract

Twitter, an online platform that is said to have a more constructive and meaningful response to the issues, is also where people are creative writers of cyber literature. Lately, there has been a trend of Twitter users to write fiction lines that have a premise of “what is your last line if you in the ending of a relationship.” This research intended to seek the attitude of Indonesian writing fiction in English. This paper analyses a short written online discourse called ‘tweet’ using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). This analysis focuses on appraising attitudes that are feeling on reacting to emotion, putting the judgment, and evaluating things. The data is taken from a Twitter account, namely @literarybase, by shorting 100 popular tweets taken to seek the trend and 20 tweets among them to be classified on its appraisal criterion. The results show that a relationship's trend ends with a sad ending rather than a happy ending. However, positive affection holds the most significant shares of lexical choice, followed by judgment and appreciation the least. That means the users mostly used ironic writing that contrasts expectation with reality. Linguistic research also implied that tragedy plot is favorable in online discourse. The study has identified the practical way of assessing attitudes in short-writing fiction on online platforms and the tendency of a community to see value in a relationship and how they express themselves in a foreign language.

Abstract

One intriguing aspect in linguistic studies is linguistic landscape, which encompasses the use of language in public spaces. This research aims to delineate the syntactic characteristics of information boards within self-cleaning temples (Malukat) situated in Gianyar, Bali. Furthermore, it investigates the function of the bilingual information boards' (Indonesian and English). The study employs a qualitative method to elucidate the syntactic scopes and semantic functions found in the informational boards. The analysis draws from landscape linguistics theory by Yendra and Artawa (2020) and incorporates micro-linguistics theories, including Noortyani's (2017) syntactic scope theory, Landry and Bourhis (1997) linguistic landscape theory, and Nida's (2000) translation equivalence theory. Findings reveal that temple information boards exhibit diverse syntactic scopes, predominantly in the form of sentences, as they convey detailed and comprehensible information to visitors. The semiotic function employed in public space signboards predominantly features informational and symbolic functions, contributing to the overall linguistic landscape of the temple environment. The research concludes the fact that the dynamic relationship between language, culture, and public spaces, emphasizing the need for a nuanced approach to linguistic analysis in diverse environments.
