Abstract

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) are among the most common complications in diabetic patients and are associated with high morbidity, mortality, and health costs. Peripheral neuropathy, peripheral arterial disease, and foot deformity are risk factors for diabetic foot ulcers. Identification of risk factors is needed to improve diabetic foot ulcer prevention strategies. This study aimed to describe the results of the monofilament 10 g test and ankle-brachial index in patients with diabetes mellitus. In this cross-sectional study, a total of 70 patients with diabetes mellitus type 1 and type 2 were included. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The results showed 54.3% of respondents had peripheral neuropathy with a monofilament score ? 8. There were 27.1% of respondents with a lower score in ABI ? 0.9 and indicated peripheral arterial disease. The monofilament test with a score of ? 8 was more common in women than in men, ages 56-65 years, and duration of diabetes mellitus for more than ten years. A lower ABI was more common in women than in men, aged 56-65 years, and duration of diabetes mellitus for more than ten years. Peripheral neuropathy and peripheral arterial disease are risk factors for diabetic foot ulcers. Therefore prevention and early screening are needed

Abstract

Diabetic ulcers are one of the complications often experienced by patients with diabetes mellitus. The incidence of diabetic ulcers has an impact on patients, families, health care, and society in general. Education plays an important role in the prevention of diabetic ulcers. This study aims to analyze the effect of health education based on the theory of planned behavior on the main factors of theory of planned behavior (attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control), intentions and diabetic ulcer prevention in patients with diabetes mellitus. The quasi-experimental approach pre-test and post-test with control group design was used in this study. There were 84 patients with diabetes mellitus divided into intervention groups and control groups. Questionnaires are used to assess attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, intentions, and behavior prevention of diabetic ulcers. The statistical analysis showed significant differences in attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, intentions, and diabetic ulcers prevention between the intervention group and the control group (p=0,000). This research suggests that education based on the theory of planned behavior can enhance the construction of the Theory of Planned Behavior (attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control), intention, and diabetic ulcer prevention in patients with diabetes mellitus. Patient behavior change strategies can be done by applying health education based on the theory of planned behavior.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a non-communicable disease with a steadily increasing prevalence. Diet management plays an pivotal role in controlling blood glucose and preventing complications, but patient compliance still varies. Self-efficacy is a major factor that influences the success of diet management. The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between self-efficacy and dietary management in individuals with diabetes mellitus. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from March to April 2024 involving 181 respondents within the working area of Pasie Panjang Public Health Center. Data were analyzed using the Spearmen rank correlation test. The finding showed that 36.5% of patients had moderate self-efficacy, while 51.4% had high dietary compliance. There was a significant relationship between self-efficacy and diet adherence (p=0.000; r=0.785), indicating a strong correlation. Individuals with high self-efficacy tended to be more compliant in following their diet, while low self-efficacy was associated with low diet adherence. Thus, increasing self-efficacy needs to be a focus in interventions to improve diet compliance in individuals with diabetes mellitus
