Abstract

The students are generally inseparable from liking popular culture to become a fan  and finally become their identity. In addition to favoring Western culture, there have also been other great cultures lately, for example Japanese, Korea, Thailand and so on. This study aims to examine whether with cross cultural knowledge students are expected to be more confident in speaking and reducing talking anxiety. This research method is descriptive qualitative research method. The data in this study were obtained from interviews and questionnaires adapted from Horwitzs "Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS)" and Oregon Universitys "Value Rubric Intercultural Knowledge". It was found that the cause of speaking anxiety was 79% internal factor, 85% lack of knowledge and 30% faculty and friend factor. The result of the research found that the correlation between cultural understanding is closely related to the decreasing of students anxiety level in speaking english. It can be concluded that CCU does help in overcoming students speaking anxiety.Keywords :cross cultural understanding, speaking, anxiety

Abstract

Teen-lit is one of the teenage novel genres. Teen-lit comes from the word teen and lit which means literature or written works. Teenlit novel means written works made by teenager telling stories revolved in teenagers’ life. This research aims at knowing how many and what types of code mixing are found inside the novel, along with the pedagogic aspects in it. The subjects of the research are chick-lit teen-lit genre entitled Aviredie by Alline, Grow up! by Sucia Ramadhani, Pertama kalinya! by Sitta Karina and Oppa and I by Orizuka and Lia Indra; and lad-lit teen lit genre entitled Hidden agenda by Jacob Julian, Marmut merah jambu by Raditya Dika, School of chemistry by Al Dhimas. The research method is qualitative method. The research results show that teen-lit mostly use more of outer code mixing in English as their speech rather than inner code mixing in their mother tongue (Indonesia), and mostly contains of social, cultural and moral paedagogic aspects. Educators especially English teacher can use this teen lit novels as one of the teaching materials. Keywords : pedagogical aspects, teen-lit

Abstract

This study is an attempt to analyze the tense and aspects found inside the ”Tangled” movie script. The data source is a sentence or speech the verb contains tense and aspects found on “Tangled” movie script. The study applied descriptive qualitative method.This study belongs to a descriptive research because it collects and analyzes the data, after that draws a conclusion based on the data. Then this research belongs to qualitative research because it involves analyzing and explaining the data. Additionally, this research is designed in descriptive qualitative research because the research examines the types of the language used of Tense and Aspects in "Tangled" Movie Scripts. In this research the data source is “Tangled” Movie Script.In “Tangled” movie script, there was 61 sentences that researcher found in the uses of tense and aspect. From the result above the dominant types on tense and aspect in “Tangled” movie script was simple future and present perfect. In the “Tangled” movie script the researcher didn’t find tense and aspect in past perfect progressive, future progressive, future perfect and future perfect progressive.

Abstract

With the development of music, one of music industry that recently has been well-known all over the world is K-Pop or Korean pop. Music from the South Korean also invaded many souls in their process and make it Korean musician and stars are now famous faces. One of the famous names from the K-Pop industry is SHINee, a boyband consists of 4 members. This paper entitled “An interpreting analysis of SHINee’s hit singles” is an interpreting analysis of 10 SHINee’s hit singles taken from the album “SHINee World” and “Lucifer” aimed to see what linguistic factors that make them hit. This research used a qualitative method. This research concluded that SHINee songs makes it hit because of numerous factors such as:  the music, the instrument, the singing style and the lyric with figurative languages. In academic environments, teachers may teach the students how to analyze song lyric because it is useful. Not only to teach vocabulary, idiom but also elements of poetry.

Abstract

Vlog, stands for video-blogging, is quite popular in the internet. Vlog also can be used as a learning tool especially for speaking skills. Therefore this research focuses on speaking skill via vlog to see the improvement of students? speaking skill. The method of this research was mixed methods. The research subjects were 13 vlogs made by students on the topic of spot tourism. The 13 vlogs were by assessed using the rubric developed by Dan Rooney (1998). The result found out that using vlog deemed to be improving students? speaking skill especially in the area of vocabulary, fluency, pronunciation and intonation. However the most common mistakes found are the way they delivered the introduction, how to form conclusions and the last is the grammatical structure. The findings of the research conclude that the application of vlog to improve students? speaking skill found to be successful with a positive perception from students as learning tool.

Abstract

Instructional media is a tool used by teachers to explain material in the classroom, which is anything that can be used to stimulate children's thoughts, attention, and feelings, to encourage the learning process. Therefore the teacher of English for young learner must create a fun classroom setting by using media, beside of technique and method to attract students attention. The aimed of this study is to describe the teacher's preparation and explain the use of media in the classroom. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods, by collecting data using interviews, observation, and document analysis. The results of this study indicate that in preparing the media, the teacher must understand the material to be taught and adjust the media to be used with the material. The use of media depend on the material, and on this research the media used by teachers are coursebooks, video, realia and picture.  Such as video to train on students' speaking and listening skills. Picture is to increase children's knowledge about vocabulary. Coursebooks are used to practice student's reading and writing skill, while realia is used to introduce children to real subject. Keywords:  English, Young learner, Instructional Media

Abstract

Writing is the most important skill in learning a language. Through writing is a way to express student’s ideas, but most students are still deeply mistaken in spelling, grammar, vocabulary and also punctuation. The one way to fix it is to give the students solution with a tool that can help and guide to show their mistake. This research aim of improving students writing skills using Grammarly application. By using Grammarly students are guided to find out students' errors and how to fix it and improve their writing skills using Grammarly application, especially in second grade in senior high school. This research used a qualitative method through pre-test and posttest. The subject of this research is consists of 32 students in second grade in senior high school. The research finding that’s after using Grammarly application can improve student’s ability in writing and express what their thought and felt. It suggested that students should be confident in conveying their ideas into written form as well as maximizing this Grammarly application to help them find errors in writing and can find the correct one. It is recommended that teachers give more serious attention errors of students in writing because of solving. Keywords:  Writing Skill, Grammarly Application

Abstract

English as the first foreign language in Indonesia has important learn. Some aspects in leaning  English cover listening, speaking reading and writing. All aspects are crucial for learners to be mastered thus, reading can be the essential aspect of all. In English reading, the difficulties that occur during the lesson is the activity.  It is necessary  for  teachers to establish a good reading activity to cover the teaching and learning activity. The author implemented group discussion to answer the problem in reading activity. The research is established by quantitative method quasi experimental design with pre test and posttest as the instrument of the research. The population is seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 4 CikalongWetan and the sample is 30 students of  7 A as experiment class and 30 students of 7 B as control class. The data collected is analyzed by SPSS using Mann Whitney U test with 0.05 level of significance. The result shows value of significance is 0.010 which is less than 0.05 coefficient level (0.010<0.05) which shows that the null hypothesis is rejected. In conclusion, there is significant difference between students’ reading comprehension in both class.Key Words : Group Discussion, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

This research aims to analyze a mistake in the usage of simple present tense contained in the several descriptive texts which was taken from the British blog course, to find out which errors that are mostly found in the text and to find out how often the use of simple present tense in the text. The data were taken from 10 examples of descriptive texts written in the British blog. The method used by the researchers is descriptive qualitative. From the whole data, the researchers concluded that three types of errors were found in the data, which are omission, addition and misformation. Omission type found in 18 clauses (60%), addition type found in 3 clauses (10%), and misformation type found in 9 clauses (30%). The only type which is not occurred in the data was the misordering type. Meanwhile omission type found as the most dominant error types which occurred in the data. From the results above, it can be concluded that the texts in the blog is good because it has few errors. That means that the texts in the blog are good for use in learning.

Abstract

The research objective entitled "Schoology : an alternative of learning applications to improve students’ writing skills in the Covid 19” to is to determine the effect of Schoology online learning media on students' writing skills and to identify students' perceptions about the use of Schoology. The research method used a descriptive qualitative research. Technique in collecting the data were test, interview,questionnaire with research subject is 44 PGSD Students from Class of 2019. The content analysis method was used to analyze the data that was started from 1)data reduction, 2)data presentation, 3)drawing conclusion and verification. The results showed that 85.59% of students agreed that the use of Schoology improved their English language skills in general and 85.90% of students agreed it improved their writing skills. Perceptions of students using Schoology : 13.42% that Schoology is easy to use, 20.13% of students have an ordinary impression, 65.77% of students have the impression that is difficult to use. From their submitted task, there was improving of 40% of score and lessen writing error found.It is to be concluded that Schoology did improve writing skill because the language of instruction in Schoology was English with user friendly outlook hence force the students to study harder using and writing in English.
