Abstract

Background: Hope has an essential role in the recovery journey for people with schizophrenia. Current studies showed that people with schizophrenia reported having low hope. There is growing evidence that mindfulness has favorable effects on mental health in populations with chronic illness, including people with schizophrenia. However, the studies evaluating effects of mindfulness on hope and recovery for people with schizophrenia are limited.Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effects of mindfulness on hope and recovery among people with schizophrenia. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was carried out on 54 patients with schizophrenia based on purposive sampling in a psychiatric hospital in Indonesia. The respondents were divided into two groups with 27 patients each in the intervention and the control group. The intervention group received 2-session mindfulness, while the control group received standard care. The data were collected using the demographic questionnaire, the Schizophrenia Hope Scale (SHS-9), and Recovery Assessment Scale (RAS), and analyzed using the Chi-Square and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: After mindfulness therapy, the intervention group showed a higher mean score of hope than the control group (14.30±2.50 and 9.04±2.15, respectively) as well as in the mean of recovery (86.78±4.00 and 73.56±6.04, respectively). There were significant differences in hope and recovery levels between the two groups with p-value <0.001.Conclusion: This study showed that mindfulness is an effective strategy to stimulate hope and recovery among people with schizophrenia. Nurses can apply mindfulness as one of the nursing interventions for helping the recovery process among this population.

Abstract

Background: Public health services today require community empowerment so that services become affordable in every village in the community. Health cadres are existing non-professional health workers who are trained to be able to support patients or the community in addressing health problems faced. Health cadres as non-professionals who are directly dealing with the community are required to increase their ability continuously according to the changes that occur in the community.Purpose: The purpose of this study is that health cadres can improve their understanding holistically about health, through the SI-SEHO application tool so that health cadres can monitor the health of patients in the community.Method: The research used is descriptive using a qualitative approach obtained from the results of empowerment and cadre training activities using the SI-SEHO application. Data analysis is based on the objectives of the training on the use of the SI-SEHO application. Results: The results of this research activity are that health cadres can understand the meaning of health holistically that is inseparable from several dimensions of understanding holistic health. As stated by SP respondent 4 "Holistic health is comprehensive health, such as body and mind health." The ability of cadres to help individuals, families and communities increase with cadres saying "now we can help others in the community by registering through applications". Other results were obtained from research subjects as several people had been detected with physical illness and some people were detected at risk for mental disorders. Conclusion: The use of information technology is able to improve the knowledge and ability of health cadres in monitoring sick individuals or patients in the community. The development of health information systems is currently needed in the development of health services in today's digital era, such as empowering health cadres through information system training.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Rehabilitation for people with mental disorders (PMD) plays an important role in helping the healing process. Given the limited number of mental institutions, Islamic boarding schools participate in assisting in the handling of PMD. This study aims to: (i) Identify the religious activities conducted by Islamic boarding schools in the rehabilitation of PMD, (ii) Identify the benefits of spiritual therapy and religious activities in assisting the recovery of PMD. This is a mixed-method research conducted in three boarding schools that provide rehabilitation of the PMD in Yogyakarta, namely Nurul Haromain, Al Islamy and Tetirah Dzikir in February-March 2017. Data from 84 randomly selected respondents with mental disorders were collected using Daily Spiritual Experience Scale (DSES) and PSP (Personal and Social Performance) questionnaires to see the relationship between the spiritual level with changes in personal and social functions in PMD and analyzed using spearman rank correlation test. Qualitative data is conducted by Focus Group Discussion. Results show that there was a relationship between the spiritual level and changes in the personal and social functions of the PMD (p = 0.008; r = 0.286). In addition, most of the religious activities obtained by PMD were praying, reciting the Quran and dhikr. The perceived benefits of religious activities for the PMD were feeling healed from mental illness and the heart becomes more calm. Spiritual therapy in the form of religious activities has an important role for PMD in assisting healing and providing hopes. Activities and living in Islamic boarding schools may enhance PMD’s confidence and social function.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Self-efficacy and resilience have been associated with loneliness in schizophrenia. Studies reported that people with schizophrenia have low self-efficacy, resilience, and experience a greater level of loneliness, which could lead to worsening symptoms. However, inpatient and outpatients’ differences in these variables have rarely been investigated. This study aimed to compare self-efficacy, resilience, and loneliness among people with schizophrenia from outpatients and inpatients. A total of 130 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia were included in this study. The data were collected using the socio-demographic questionnaire, the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale 10 (CD-RISC 10), and the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Loneliness Scale Version 3. The Chi-Square, Mann-Whitney, and the t-test were used for data analysis. The results indicated that inpatient has higher self-efficacy and resilience than outpatients. Interestingly, inpatient significantly has lower loneliness than outpatients. The findings support the evidence of psychological differences in schizophrenia and provide a better understanding of different settings with this diagnosis. In the clinical practice, these results suggest developing interventions to enhance resilience and self-efficacy in schizophrenia. Keywords: Loneliness, Resilience, Self-Efficacy, Schizophrenia
