Abstract

Lymnaea rubiginosa as a snail host found in the Babura River, Medan City, is a type of snail that is known to be an intermediate host in the life cycle of several trematode worms. Lymnaea rubiginosa was collected using net sources at four research stations and there were 10 sub stations at each research station. Research in 2023 found Lymneae rubiginosa in juvenile form and only at station two was it found, and even then only in one collection and only one individual. Snails can be infected by Fasciola gigantica and by other trematodes such as Echinostoma sp. and Trichobilharzia sp. as well as oligochaete worms, namely Chaetogaster sp. Chaetogaster sp. infection in Lymnaea rubiginosa snails originating from rice fields and ponds shows that the spread of these worms is widespread. If it is suspected that the worm is capable of preying on the Fasciola gigantica miracidium, then Chaetogaster sp. more effective for use as a biological control. If the Lymnaea rubiginosa snail has been infected with E. hystricosum, then the snail cannot be infected again with other trematodes such as Trichobilharzia brevis. There seems to be a mechanism that inhibits the occurrence of mixed infections. Trematode and oligochaete worm infections in the snail's body can affect the development and growth of the snail. There is no mixed infection between two types of trematodes, namely Echinostoma sp. and Streigidae in a snail Lymnaea rubiginosa supports the phenomenon of antagonism.

Samples were taken using Eckman Grab at 3 times at each station. The macrozoobenthos found consisted of two classes, three orders, eight families, 15 species with a total of 565 individuals. The species found were Brotia subgloriosa, Brotia peninsularis, Brotia castulata, Pomacea diffusa, Pomacea paludosa, Filopaludina polygramma, Filopaludina sp., Melanoides tuberculata, Lymnaea sp., Emilia sp., Corbicula sumatrana, Corbicula fluminea, Corbicula japonica, Pilsbryoconcha exilis, and Anodonta sp.. The macrozoobenthic species with the highest number of individuals was Corbicula sumatrana with 141 individuals and the least was Lymnea sp. by 1 individual. The macrozoobenthos ecological analysis included the average density of 2260, the average diversity index of 1.282, the average uniformity index of 0.633, and the average dominance of 0.390. Then correlated with physico-chemical factors using Pearson correlation (r). Correlation of diversity index with physico-chemical factors from the strongest to the weakest starting from depth and phosphate, turbidity, temperature, pH, BOD, and DO.

Abstract

The research was conducted with the aim of knowing the condition of the phytoplankton community structure based on diversity index criteria in the waters of Lake Toba, Ajibata District, Toba Samosir Regency. This research was conducted in February -March 2021. This type of research was ex post de facto, carried out at 5 observation stations with 3 repetitions. Phytozooplankton samples were taken using Net plankton No. 25. Identification of phytoplankton was carried out in the Biology Laboratory of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Medan State University. Phytoplankton found in 12 genera, namely: Achnantes, Aulacoisera, Encyonema, Claphora, Stigeoclonium, Dictyosphaerium, Staurastrum, Monoraphidium, Oscillatoria, Microcytis, Nostoc, and Chroococcus. The diversity index at Station I was 1.35, II was 1.36, III was 1.31, IV was 1.36, and V was 1.72. The condition of the phytoplankton community structure is stable in the moderate category. The temperature of the waters ranges from 22°C-25°C, the light transparency to the waters ranges from 4-4.5 m, the pH of the waters ranges from 7.36-8.85, the DO of the waters ranges from 6.84-8.25 mg/l, the BOD of the waters ranged from 1.01 to 3.42 mg/l. Lake Toba water quality based on physical and chemical parameters is within the normal range.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to produce an encyclopedia of vertebrate and invertebrate animal diversity in Lake Lau Kawar that is valid, feasible, and effective as a biology learning resource based on scientific literacy. The low scientific literacy of students and the limited contextual biology learning resources based on local potential are problems in learning. This study used the ADDIE development model method which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The subjects of the study were students of the Biology Education Study Program in the Basic Ecology course. From the results of the research data processing, the results of the ADDIE development procedure were obtained, the validity of the material expert product was an average of 90.15% (very good), the validity of the design expert product was an average of 95.44% (very good), the validity of the learning expert product was an average of 88.86 (very good), the average lecturer response was 89.68% (very good), and the results of the N-Gain analysis of the results showed that the average value of the experimental class was higher than the control class. The results showed that the developed encyclopedia was in the very feasible category based on expert assessments and received very positive responses from users. Effectiveness testing showed an increase in students' scientific literacy skills, ranging from moderate to high. Therefore, this locally-based encyclopedia of animal diversity is suitable and effective as a biology learning resource in higher education.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of an environment-based Biodiversity Flipbook E-Module in improving tenth-grade students’ understanding of biology and their scientific process skills at SMA Negeri 21 Medan. The study employed a one-group pretest–posttest design involving 36 students. Research instruments included a validated biology comprehension test and an observation sheet used to assess students’ scientific process skills during three environment-based learning sessions. Data were analyzed using the N-gain score and descriptive statistics. The results showed that the mean pretest score of 33.81 increased to 83.88 in the posttest, resulting in an N-gain score of 0.76, which falls into the high category. Students’ scientific process skills were classified as very good across all learning sessions and demonstrated an increasing trend during the final meeting. These findings indicate that the environment-based Biodiversity Flipbook E-Module is effective in enhancing students’ understanding of biological concepts and their scientific process skills through contextual learning grounded in real environmental exploration.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the diversity of gastropods at Lagundri Beach, South Nias, and to develop and evaluate the feasibility, practicality, and effectiveness of a booklet as a biology learning resource for senior high school students on the topic of biodiversity. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the 4D model (define, design, develop, disseminate). The research subjects consisted of five validators, two teachers, and 31 students. Data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively through validity, practicality, and effectiveness tests, with effectiveness assessed using normality, homogeneity, t-test, and N-gain analyses. The results showed that the gastropod diversity index was 3.31, which falls into the high category. The developed booklet was classified as highly feasible (average >88%), highly practical (≥91%), and moderately effective, with an N-gain value of 63.13%. The t-test indicated a significant difference between the experimental and control classes (t = 4.80; p < 0.05). Therefore, this booklet based on local potential is suitable for use as a supplementary learning resource to improve students’ conceptual understanding and biodiversity literacy.
