Abstract

This research discussed apology strategies in English by native speaker. This descriptive study was presented within the framework of Pragmatics based on the forms of strategies due to the coding manual as found in CCSARP (Cross-Cultural Speech Acts Realization Project).The goals of this study were to describe the apology strategies in English by native speaker and identify the influencing factors of it. Data were collected through the use of the questionnaire in the form of Discourse Completion Test, which was distributed to 30 native speakers. Data were classified based on the degree of familiarity and the social distance between speaker and hearer and then the data of native will be separated and classified by the type of strategies in coding manual. The results of this study are the pattern of apology strategies of native speaker brief with the pattern that potentially occurs IFID plus Offer of repair plus Taking on responsibility. While Alerters, Explanation and Downgrading appear with less number of percentage. Then, the factors that influence the apology utterance by native speakers are the social situation, the degree of familiarity and degree of the offence which more complicated the mistake tend to produce the most complex utterances by the speaker.

Abstract

The research is about the implementation of using picture as the media in teaching Present Continuous tense. The purpose is to see is there any significant implementation of using media in teaching Present Continuous Tense. This research conducts three steps (pre-test, treatment and post-test) and held in four meetings. The participants are 21 students of class VIIA of MTs Muhammadiyah Padangpanjang by using purposive sampling. This pre-experimental research is quantitative and the data taken from pre-test and post-test and test sheet is used as the instrumentation. The result showed that the using of picture as media has implementation in teaching Present Continuous Tense. It can be seen from the student‘s scores‘ improvements taken from all indicators. Generally, total mean of students‘ score of pre-test is 43.24 meanwhile the mean score of post-test is 71.62. The effectiveness of using this media is implemented from students‘ scores which are increased after learning Present Continuous Tense by using picture. While the most significant improvement is in the use of –ing form as the core of the Present Continuous Tense.

Abstract

Affix is one of the necessary thing in language including English.  The aim of this research is to find out the varieties of affixes in English and the application into sentences or utterance which commonly occur in daily used. The purposes of this research are to classify affixes in English and attempt to explain about the affixation process and also the use in sentences.The method of research is descriptive qualitative. The data collected by using documentating technique taken from the document sources like dictionary, books and notes.The finding is there are 4 kinds of affixes in English: Preffix, Suffix, Interfix and Superfix or Suprafix.The result  shows that in daily spoken and written language used, the four kinds of affixes are commonly occured and it indicates that English also experience the affixation process in order to compose a new word from the based form and had been common to be used in daily utterance in everyday communication. Keywords: Affixes, English, Affixation process

Abstract

This research discusses about the special language style from the comments on the book cover of non fictions based on the using of distinctive linguistic features. The style of language is analyzed from stylistics point of view and put the lexical cohesion, reference and another linguistic elements as the part of distinctive linguistic features to be the analysis focus then reflect it to the function and the effect it brings. The methods are referential and formal. Based on the analyis, it can be found that in the comments of the book cover, generally, include all of the lexical and reference elements. The most significant element that mostly occur is repetition and personal reference. While, another forms such as synonym, general word, super ordinate, collocation, demonstrative and comparative reference occur in less percentage. The purpose of using these elements is in order that the comments of the non fictions‟ book can influence the reader through the choosing features then bring the psychological effect for commercial purposes. Moreover, the effect that it caused for the reader is being influenced the readers‟ thought to be more interested to the book from its dictions or the specific distinctive linguistic features.

Abstract

The formation development and maintenance of school cultural values is very important in order to create honesty, mutual trust, discipline, neat, clean, beautiful and create a harmonious atmosphere so that the formation of student character is good. This study aims to describe the school's cultural planning and implementation. The subjects of this study were principals of primary schools, teachers and students in primary schools in the Aur Birugo Tigobaleh district. Data collection techniques in this study were carried out by means of observation, interviews and documentation. Data analysis techniques use techniques developed by Miles and Huberman (1996). The findings of this study include: (1) school cultural planning is not planned according to MoNE standards; (2) the implementation of school culture is implemented by every school member but it does not yet refer to the correct guidelines. For this reason, it is recommended that schools make plans and implement correctly according to applicable guidelines.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the large number of adolescents or teenagers who spend their time playing on social media, so adolescents experience addiction, which causes individuals to forget their responsibilities. This research discusses how adolescent self-control and social media addiction are described, and their effects. This research aims to determine the description of self-control and social media addiction in adolescents, apart from that, to determine the influence of self-control on social media addiction among adolescents in Padang City. The research method used in this research is quantitative correlational. The subjects in this research were 52 teenagers in Padang City who had a high intensity in using social media. The data collection techniques used are research instruments, validity tests, and reliability tests. Next, the analysis prerequisite tests are the normality test and the linearity test. The data analysis technique used is a simple linear regression test. From the analysis results obtained, it is known that the average self-control possessed by Kampung Baru Lubuk Lintah teenagers is in the medium category, as well as social media addiction which is in the medium category. So it can be seen the influence of self-control on social media addiction. The higher an individual's level of self-control, the lower the level of social media addiction can be avoided. Conversely, if the level of self-control is low then social media addiction will increase.

Abstract

This study proposes to find out the student perception toward the use of Duolingo as an English learning application, Duolingo as a motivation tool to increase their motivation for learning English, and aspects of language that can be improved by language skill practice items on Duolingo. This study was quantitative research by using questioner as the data collection technique. This study was conducted on August 16, 2021, with the ninth-grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah Padang Panjang. The sample of this study consists of 16 students. The result showed that a lot of students gave a positive response to their experience using Duolingo based on the questionnaire.  Duolingo is useful and helpful and it brings motivational benefits for students in English learning. Moreover, it shows that they easily master the fourth language skills and even practice their English in their daily life. Duolingo provides many uses for students as an English learning application. The use of Duolingo can help students learn English interestingly and make the learning process more enjoyable. Therefore, the use of Duolingo is recommended for English learning to help students improve their language learning abilities. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa terhadap penggunaan Duolingo sebagai aplikasi pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, Duolingo sebagai alat motivasi untuk meningkatkan motivasi belajar bahasa Inggris dan aspek bahasa yang dapat ditingkatkan dengan item latihan keterampilan bahasa di Duolingo. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan menggunakan kuesioner sebagai teknik pengumpulan data. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada tanggal 16 Agustus 2021 pada siswa kelas IX SMP Muhammadiyah Padang Panjang. Sampel penelitian ini berjumlah 16 siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa banyak siswa yang memberikan respon positif terhadap pengalaman mereka menggunakan Duolingo berdasarkan kuisioner yang disebar. Duolingo bermanfaat, membantu dan dapat memotivasi siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Selain itu, hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mereka dengan mudah menguasai keempat keterampilan bahasa dan bahkan mempraktekkan bahasa Inggris mereka dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Duolingo memberikan banyak kegunaan bagi siswa sebagai aplikasi pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Penggunaan Duolingo dapat membantu siswa untuk belajar bahasa Inggris dengan cara yang menarik dan membuat proses belajar menjadi lebih menyenangkan.Oleh karena itu, penggunaan Duolingo direkomendasikan untuk pembelajaran bahasa Inggris untuk membantu siswa meningkatkan kemampuan belajar bahasa mereka.

Abstract

The purposes of this research are to find out the factors that cause students’ anxiety, the types of student’s anxiety in speaking English and the alternative solutions to overcome student’s anxiety based on student’s perspective at the first year students of English Department in Muhammadiyah University of Sumatera Barat. This research is descriptive-qualitative research. The participants are 10 students who experienced anxiety in the class at first year students of English Department in Muhammadiyah University of Sumatera Barat. The data were taken from the results of open-ended questionnaire and the answers of interview. The results of this research showe that there are 5 factors that cause students’ anxiety in English speaking. The most dominant factors is Lack of Vocabularies, Then the others factors such as Fear of Making Mistakes, Lack of Confidence, Worry about Friends/Classmates Point of View and Types of Task that was Given by the Lecturer have also found. From these factors then three types of anxiety have been categorized. The most common type is Communication Apprehension, then Fear of Negative Evaluation and the least is Test Anxiety. Additionnally 3 alternative solutions to overcome students’ anxiety based on students’ perspective was found out. Firstly is Increase Self Confidence, secondly is Study Hard, and lastly is the Student should have Positive Mindset. Keywords : Speaking, Anxiety.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the teachers’ teaching strategies in facing students different learning styles. The design of research was descriptive. The subject of the research was the 30 students from three classes (VII.2, VIII.2 and VIII.3) and 3 English teachers in SMPN 1 Lembang Jaya. Instruments used to collect the data in this research were questionnaire and study of lesson plan.  The questionnaire used to analyze students learning styles, and study of lesson plan used to analyze teachers teaching strategy. From the result of the research, the research found that students has three learning styles (visual style, auditory style and kinesthetic style), from the three learning styles above in SMPN 1 Lembang Jaya, visual learner as dominant students learning styles.  Furthermore, as for teachers teaching strategy the teacher used picture, text and video during teaching process.Keywords : Teachers’ Teaching Strategies, Students Different Learning Style
