Abstract

This small scale case study analyses one of the most debated parts in the field of teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL); and that is, the teachers and students’ perceptions and beliefs of EFL reading comprehension assessment at a major university in Indonesia. The research study involved, randomly selected five EFL teachers and ninety-six EFL students between the period of January and May in Academic Year 2017/2018. Twenty-item Likert scale questionnaires were distributed to the students. Moreover, semi-structured interviewed was done to collect the data from the teachers. Data analysis using descriptive qualitative methods indicate that EFL students need detailed elaboration of their reading practices in answering comprehension questions. Informing their reading results or scores only does not help them very much to practice the reading comprehension skills needed to comprehend the texts. Furthermore, the data indicate that EFL teachers encounter obstacles when they monitor various reading tasks and activities are benefit the students. They tended to assess the students’ reading comprehension based on the final correct answers achieved at the end of exercises.

Abstract

Instructors and researchers of writing in higher education often experience discouraged when they find their teaching falling short their expectation even though a number of endeavors they invest in the teaching practices and research works. As a writing teacher for higher education, I feel disappointed when I am not able to present more beneficial support than the motivation to write using appropriate vocabularies, making grammatical sentences consisted of compound or complex ones, organizing ideas of writing or paragraphs, constructing coherence essays and so on. After ineffective attempts at aiding higher education students significantly enhance their writing, I began to review the nature of writing and facets other than the language competences comprising what activities the teachers are necessary to carry out, how the students’ writing practices are applied during their writing process, who are involved in the process of writing and how long the writing activities take place. I have figured out solutions to some questions in the book entitled “Developing Writers in Higher Education”. In this five-section book, Anne Ruggles Gere describes comprehensive longitudinal study about topic concerning on how students in higher education keep practicing their writing process and their writing follow various developmental paths.

Abstract

Technology has played an important role in human life including education. Teachers in this century are required to have technology skills for language teaching. However, in order to understand their level of literacy and challenges faced in implementing technology a study is required. The present study investigated student teacher`s literacy and challenges in using technology. This research was conducted by using mix method with sequential explanatory design. Sixty-one students of the seventh semester of English study program Universitas Jambi were selected as the participant in this research. In the quantitative phase Researchers used survey to collect the data to measure their experience, views, and literacy on technology using a likert scale of one to five. In the qualitative phase, the data were collected using interview towards eighth students are selected purposively from the high score and low score and analyze it by using content analysis. The survey showed that the participating student teachers have: 1) adequate experiences in using technology(x=3.66), 2). Positive views on technology(x=3.56), 3).average literacy on technology(x=3.87). The results of the interview showed some challenges faced by student teachers in implementing technology, The lack of facilities is the biggest challenge. The implication of the research is also discussed

Abstract

Writing is as essential language skill that require the college students to be able to have good language learning. The aim of this research is to develop supplementary Paragraph Writing materials in behalf with Genre-Based Approach (GBA) as the underpinning instructional theory. This research focus on arising problem out here is: How is a model of genre based paragraph writing materials for the second semester students of English Education Study Program at Jambi University developed? In this research, research and development (R&D) was the type of research. In addition, the researcher caries out a series of data in which the earlier data collecting by interviewing the six students and it is followed by analyzingparagraph writing syllabus and writing samples to collect more data and information. The participants of this research are the six students at thefourth semester students of English Education Study Program at Jambi University. The research indicated that the second semester students need to learn three topics of paragraph writing materials they are; 1) descriptive, 2) cause and effect, and 3) comparison and contrast paragraph. When the analysis stage and design stage have done by the researcher. The researcher continued the development stage by involving the learning materials and design validator who validate the validity of the product. Then the product is tested by the six students as the users of this product. In conclusion, the researcher continue to evaluate the product’s weaknesses.

Abstract

Multilingual language learners are facing various challenges of language attrition, both internally and externally. Lexical attrition is one of phenomena experienced by the learners since they can no longer do something which s/he had previously been able to do, and this loss of proficiency is not caused by deterioration of the brain due to age, illness or injury, but by changes in linguistic behaviour due to severance of the contact with the community in which the language is spoken (Smith, 2017). This article is trying to capture the studies of lexical attrition in the multilingual contexts and suggest several improvement strategies in experiencing the lexical attrition. This study is using content analysis to explore existing literature on lexical attrition in multilingual language learners over the last ten years. A summary of more than seventeen is provided along with the content analysis. The finding of these studies gives a significant contribution to the field of language attrition that focuses on practical analysis in learners or speakers points of view in the multilingual context. It shows that the limitation of understanding on lexical attrition concept from the local authorities in many educational settings have resulted in less efficient and effective language maintenance.

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) ini bertujuan untuk melatih siswa kelas XI Sekolah Menengah Atas Swasta Al-Mahdaliyah Kota Jambi dalam melakukan note-taking secara konvensional dan digital. Note- taking konvensional berarti mencatat menggunakan kertas dan pena, sedangkan note-taking digital adalah mencatat dengan menggunakan aplikasi pada gawai. Dengan memberikan pelatihan keterampilan note-taking yang efektif diharapkan dapat membantu siswa mengembangkan keterampilan mencatat untuk meningkatkan kinerja akademik mereka, tidak mudah lupa pada pelajaran, dan mengembangkan critical thinking (karena bisa menganalisis informasi dan mengaplikasikannya dalam buku catatan). Selain itu, siswa bisa berlatih mengembangkan teknik note-taking mereka sendiri agar menjadi lebih efektif. Metode yang diberikan dalam kegiatan PkM adalah pelatihan, modelling, dan tindak lanjut berupa pengimplementasian note-taking dalam pembelajaran. Kemudian, angket refleksi kegiatan diisi siswa setelah pemberian materi dan praktik. Hasil analisis kualitatif pada data angket tersebut menunjukkan bahwa siswa memilik persepsi yang positif terhadap materi pelatihan note-taking dan mulai mengenal teknik note-taking secara digital. Mayoritas siswa mengatakan akan menggunakan teknik yang diajarkan untuk membuat catatan dalam pembelajaran yang mereka lakukan.

Abstract

Traditional views of leadership often associate strong leadership with directness, decisiveness, and dominance, which are stereotypically coded as masculine while perceiving empathy and collaborative orientation–qualities commonly associated with femininity–as less compatible with effective leadership. However, contemporary research demonstrates the increasing importance of empathy in effective leadership, particularly during crisis situations. This study explores the persuasive strategies employed by New Zealand’s former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in her speeches following the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this study applies discourse analysis to six transcripts of speeches by Jacinda Ardern to identify discourse patterns that demonstrate her persuasive strategies and examined how these patterns function in crisis communication. The findings revealed three critical elements of Ardern’s persuasive strategies: combining transparency and compassion to foster trust, demonstrating clarity and decisiveness to establish authority, and using motivational and forward-looking discourse to inspire collective action. These elements demonstrate how Ardern’s empathetic communication helped build trust and encourage compliance, while her directive and decisive language facilitated actionable resolution, which enabled the nation’s swift recovery. By critically challenging persistent gender stereotypes in leadership that frame empathy and decisiveness as mutually exclusive traits, this study underscores the transformative potential of empathetic leadership in managing crise and advances gender equity in leadership discourse.

Abstract

Kemandirian belajar merupakan salah satu faktor penentu keberhasilan belajar karena karakter pelajar mandiri yang mencakup inisiatif, tanggung jawab, pemecahan masalah, percaya diri, dan kontrol diri, berperan penting dalam proses pencapaian keberhasilan tersebut. Namun, berdasarkan hasil identifikasi masalah, guru mengatakan siswa Madrasah Tsanawiyah Muhammadiyah Kota Jambi masih memiliki motivasi belajar yang belum tinggi karena latar siswa yang berasal dari keluarga ekonomi menengah ke bawah dan juga berasal dari anak-anak panti asuhan, dimana hal ini berdampak pada realisasi kemandirian belajar mereka. Maka, tujuan kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kesadaran siswa akan pentingnya kemandirian belajar. Tahapan pelaksanaan pengabdian adalah pemberian pelatihan dalam bentuk ceramah, mengerjakan studi kasus, pemberian umpan balik, dan diakhiri dengan melakukan refleksi pembelajaran. Pada sesi ceramah dan diskusi, siswa diberikan materi mengenai mandiri belajar sebagai upaya untuk menguasai keterampilan ini, diikuti dengan analisis studi kasus tentang kemandirian belajar oleh siswa. Kemudian, dilakukan pemberian umpan balik terhadap pengerjaan studi kasus tersebut dan juga siswa melakukan refleksi terhadap proses belajar mereka selama ini. Dari rangkaian aktifitas ini, siswa berhasil mengerjakan studi kasus mengenai kemandirian belajar dan melakukan refleksi diri terhadap praktek belajar mereka. Diharapkan aktifitas belajar di kelas terus mengintegrasikan kompetensi sikap beserta penilaian yang sesuai agar siswa dapat terlatih secara terus menerus untuk menguasai sikap-sikap belajar yang koheren dan mendukung proses belajar mereka.

Abstract

This paper describes the perspectives of English teachers and non-English teachers in a university setting about students’ Intercultural Communication skills in the context of English as a foreign language (here after, EFL) in Indonesia. This is analyzed through both English and non-English teachers’ viewpoints regarding their perceptions of Intercultural Communication skills of attitudes, knowledge of social groups and their products and practices in one’s own and in one’s interlocutor’s country, interpreting document or event from another culture, acquiring new knowledge of a culture, cultural practices, operating knowledge, attitudes, skills, and evaluating critically on the basis of explicit criteria perspectives, practices, or products in one’s own and other culture. In this study, eight English teachers and six non-English teachers in a university, Indonesia were involved. From the Focus Group Discussion, this study proved that Intercultural Communication is essential competences in learning English, both from English and non-English teachers viewpoints. The present study is expected to provide comprehensive analysis of what activities or experiences of teaching Intercultural Awareness in EFL environment can be achieved by the students.

Abstract

Feedback plays a crucial role in achieving learning objectives. This study explores students’ experience and preferences in feedback provision and its implications on reading and writing instruction. This study applied a qualitative research design with a case study method. The participants were ten fifth-semester students of the 2023/2024 academic year of the English education study program at a public university in Jambi, Indonesia. A focus group discussion with the students was used to explore their experiences and preferences, supported by the data from the learning management system (LMS) of the university. Furthermore, the data were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that feedback was provided by lecturers and peers, both in online and offline modes. The peers provided more informal feedback, and lecturers provided more detailed and natural feedback on the students’ reading and writing exercises. While students appreciated peer feedback, they also felt uncertain when they received feedback from peers. In addition, the students preferred face-to-face direct constructive feedback, which can help them increase self-awareness and understand more details. However, being loaded with other teaching tasks and academic activities on campus, lecturers could not fully meet this particular preference.  Thus, as the pedagogical implication, multimodal feedback which is personalized to enable students to feed forward in their own individual learning journeys should be used.
