Abstract

The surface of ultrahydrophobic glass has been successfully prepared using the combination of TiO2 and stearic acid. TiO2 was used to increase the surface roughness, while stearing acid was a surface modifier. The peroxo sol-gel method has been used to synthesize TiO2 precursors on the glass layer followed by modification of stearic acid. The maximal water contact angle of 141o has been obtained for the composition of 0.4 grams of stearic acid and 20 mL of ethanol (NKTS-2%). AFM analysis showed the roughness of NKTS-2% is 4,15 nm, which was greater than the pure glass. FTIR analysis also showed vibration of C=O (carbonyl) at 1697cm-1 indicating the chemical interaction between TiO2 and stearic acid. EDX spectrum analysis of TiO2/stearic acid (TiO2/C18H36O2) showed the existence of titanium, oxygen, and carbon. The optimum sample (NKTS-2%) showed a good transparency and self-cleaning properties compared to pure glass

Abstract

Through a combination of biosynthetic and hydrothermal methods, N-doped TiO2 photocatalyst has been successfully synthesized using various concentrations of ammonia as a nitrogen source, namely 10% w/w (NTO10), 20% w/w (NTO20), 35% w/w (NTO35), and 50% w/w (NTO50). The synthesis of TiO2 was conducted using Aloe vera (L) Burm F. rind extract as a natural capping agent via the biosynthetic method, followed by a nitrogen doping process via the hydrothermal method. The X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that all phases were anatase. According to the results of the UV-Vis Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) analysis using the Tauc-Plot method, all N-doped TiO2 samples showed a decrease in the energy gap compared to the TO sample. This indicates that the doping of TiO2 using nitrogen has been successfully doped into TiO2. The photocatalytic activity of N-doped TiO2 was evaluated for the photoreduction of the Cr(VI) model pollutant using a 24-watt LED lamp as a visible light source for 120 minutes. The results indicate that the NTO35 is the best-prepared N-doped TiO2, which showed a reduced rate for the Cr (VI) model pollutant of 50.88%, or two times greater than that of undoped TiO2.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the use of TiO2/Zeolite on reducing concentrations of nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, phosphate, BOD, COD and pH in agricultural wastewater by photolysis. In this study, sample analysis was carried out using UV-Vis spectrophotometer and FTIR and for the characterization of TiO2/Zeolite catalysts using FTIR, XRD and SEM. In agricultural wastewater samples, the initial concentration of nitrate was 11,409 mg/L, nitrite was 0,424 mg/L, ammonia was 5,075 mg/L and phosphate was 5,364 mg/L. The most optimum decrease in concentration for nitrate, nitrite, ammonia and phosphate, respectively, was 4,332 mg/L with an irradiation time of 90 minutes; 0,118 mg/L with an irradiation time of 75 minutes; 0.395 mg/L with an irradiation time of 90 minutes and 1,207 mg/L with an irradiation time of 60 minutes on the addition of TiO2/Zeolite as much as 0.8 grams for the determination of nitrate and phosphate while for nitrite and ammonia as much as 0.6 grams. Prior to the degradation, the BOD value was 62,4 mg/L and the COD value was 107,07 mg/L. Meanwhile, after degradation, the BOD value decreased to 5,92 mg/L and COD to 35 mg/L. The results of the analysis using FTIR on agricultural wastewater show that there is no significant shift in wave number before and after degradation. The characterization of TiO2/Zeolite catalyst using FTIR, XRD and SEM did not show significant changes before and after the degradation process was carried out which indicated that TiO2/zeolite could be applied in degrading agricultural wastewater.

Abstract

Abstract

The use of feed in fish farming is often inefficient because fish only partially consume the feed spread in ponds, so it becomes waste for the aquatic environment and, even worse, will trigger new diseases. The Department of Chemistry's of Universitas Andalas team was trying to overcome this problem by increasing the efficiency of fish feed. For the feed to work optimally and produce good quality fish weight, it is necessary to modify the nutrition of the fish feed, one of which is by adding probiotics through a fermentation process. The method used in this activity includes training, mentoring, and demonstration plots in feed fermentation and counselling regarding the right time to feed. This activity targets fish farmers in the Koto Luar area, Pauh District, Padang, with a fish culturing group, "Family Sepakat", as the partner. Feed fermentation was carried out with probiotic starters such as Bacillus sp., saccharomyces cerevisiae, L. fermentum, L. plantarum, and W. paramesenteroides. This activity improved catfish growth, and the death rate was lower than in catfish farming without feed fermentation treatment.

Abstract

Porous N-doped TiO2 photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by an environmentally friendly peroxo sol-gel method using polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a templating agent. Here, the effect of PEG addition to the aqueous peroxotitanium solutions on the structure, pore properties and photocatalytic activity of the obtained photocatalysts was systematically studied. The prepared photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). It was found that the doping of nitrogen narrows the band gap of TiO2 leading to enhance its visible-light response. The BET analysis shows that the prepared photocatalysts have a typical mesoporous structure with pore sizes of 3–6 nm. The photocatalytic activity of the prepared photocatalysts was evaluated by photocatalytic reduction of Cd(II) in an aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. The results show that porous N-doped TiO2 with the optimal PEG addition had the highest Cd(II) reduction of 85.1% after 2.5 h irradiation in neutral aqueous solution. This significant improvement in photocatalytic activity of the prepared photocatalysts was mainly attributed to the synergistic combination of N doping and porous structure, which could actively increase the catalytic active site of this photocatalysts. Abstract

In this study, TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized without adding extract (0% v/v) (control) and with the addition of Gunung Omeh orange peel extract with various concentration, namely 4% v/v, 10% v/v, and 20% v /v. This study aims to study the use of Gunung Omeh orange peel extract on the formation of TiO2 nanoparticles and determine its characteristics. The characteristics of the resulting nanoparticles were characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy, Ultraviolet-Visible (DRS UV-Vis), Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-Ray (SEM-EDX), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), and Thermo Gravimetric and Differential Thermal Analyzer (TG-DTA). XRD results showed that the TiO2 phase formed was anatase. The optical property of TiO2 nanoparticles showed that the obtained TiO2 nanoparticles absorb in the UV region (200-400 nm). The results of SEM-EDX show that the resulting TiO2 nanoparticles are spherical. Meanwhile, the TOKJ20 sample has increased agglomeration so that the particle shape is rod-like. The EDX spectrum showes the presence of Ti and O peaks indicated the formation of TiO2. The results of BET measurement showed that the control TiO2 had a larger surface area of 66.11 m2/g compared to TiO2 using the addition of other orange peel extracts. From the results obtained, it was concluded that, in general, the addition of orange peel extract did not significantly affect the formation of TiO2 nanoparticles.

Abstract

SrTiO3 thin layer were synthesized through solvothermal method by using FTO (fluorine-doped tin oxide) glass as a conductive substrate. The raw materials strontium nitrate (Sr(NO3)2) and titanium tetra isopropoxide (TTIP) were dissolved in ethanol solvent. Sample purity, elemental compositions and surface morphology were characterized using x-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD analysis showed that the synthesized SrTiO3 thin layer at 200oC for 24 hours with the addition of CTAB and TBA had intensity peaks that mathced the SrTiO3 standard (ICSD #94573) with perovskite structure. This result was supported by the XRD pattern of the sample powder. The EDX spectrum showed that titanium and oxygen were in the sample, but the presence of strontium was not found, due to its weak intensity. Based on the SEM image, the morphology seen is distributed equally and the grain size is rather smaller in the sample with the addition of CTAB and TBA.

Abstract

Dyes have a complex molecular structure that is difficult to degrade and can persist for a long time in water bodies. This study examines more thoroughly the effectiveness of photodegradation-adsorption of dyes, kinetic aspects, isotherms, thermodynamics, identification of the structure of photodegradation products, and changes in environmental quality parameter values whose results are quite satisfactory. The combination of photodegradation-adsorption of dyes by TiO2-chitosan modified glass beads using a flow system has never been accomplished before. Flowing of the dye resulted in a dye degradation efficiency of 99%. The FESEM-EDX analysis shows that TiO2-chitosan has been coated onto the surface of the glass beads. R2 of kinetics MB, MO, RB are 0.99234, 0.9889, 0.9971, which were pseudo-first order. Qm, KL, R2 are 6.4382, 0.70533, 0.99923; 16.7364, 1.42059, 0.98816; 6.0078, 1.06973, 0.99889, respectively. The ∆H, ∆S, ∆S of -9.388, -0.024, -1.979; -27.182, -0.078, -3.592; -4.819, -0.017, 0.464 indicate the exothermic and spontaneous reaction. COD, TOC, pH, turbidity values have reached the threshold required by the government. The degradation products formed during the photodegradation-adsorption process were identified using LC-MS that the structure of the dye has been degraded to become simpler so that it is safely disposed of into the environment.

Abstract

The hydroxyapatite/alginate (HAp/Alg) composite was synthesized using an in-situ precipitation route. The effect of pH (8, 9, 10, and 11) and calcination temperature (300, 500, 700, and 900 °C) were studied by characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM with EDAX). XRD results show the hexagonal crystal system of HAp for each pH value and the biphase (HAp and whitelockite) for the sintering temperature at 700 and 900 °C. The FTIR spectra show no impurity peaks. SEM images revealed spherical-like (HAp/Alg-11) and flake-like (HAp/Alg-900) particles with good homogeneity, size, and shape that could be notable for biomedical utilization, such as drug delivery material. Drug loading and release ability of pure HAp, HAp/Alg-11, and HAp/Alg-900 composites have been investigated with clindamycin hydrochloride as the drug model. The maximum clindamycin HCl release from HAp, HAP/Alg-11, and HAp/Alg-900 reached 74.48, 92.75, and 69.65% in the 8th hour. HAp/Alg-11 has the highest release because it has the largest surface area of 162.584 m2/g. Antibacterial test results showed HAp/Alg-11 has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, confirming that HAp/Alg-11 composite has the potential to be applied as drug delivery.
