Abstract

The prevalence of caries shows a percentage of 90% in toddlers in Indonesia. Caries has a negative impact on the body development of toddlers. Through the right parenting style, it is considered to be possible to reduce the caries rate in children under five. This study aims to determine the effect of parenting style on toddler dental caries in Baki District, Sukoharjo Regency. Accordingly, this analytical observational research applied a cross-sectional approach. Samples were taken using a purposive sampling technique involving 111 toddlers and their parents in Baki District. Toddler dental caries was measured using the dmft index, and parenting style was measured by a questionnaire adapted and modified from The Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ). Process data with IBM SPSS version 20. Results show that the parenting style of most parents involved in this study was authoritative (47,7%), followed by authoritarian (28,8%), and lastly permissive (23,4%). The highest dmft index is found in toddlers raised by permissive parents (7,92). The average education level of mothers in the three parenting styles was at the high school level (65%). The majority of parents' income in a month is in the moderate category. The conclusion showed that parenting style had no effect on toddler dental caries in Baki District, Sukoharjo Regency.

Abstract

Fluoride Varnish is a fluoride system applied professionally to prevent caries. This material can stick to the tooth surface for a relatively long time, thereby releasing fluoride efficiently and effectively. This fluoride varnish can prevent enamel demineralization in children with moderate to high risk of caries. Below we introduce various types of fluoride varnishes that are often used in the field of pediatric dentistry. This article is about the review of fluoride varnish in the world of pediatric dentistry, based on 39 journal references, consisting of 6 journals on fluoride in pediatric dentistry, 9 fluoride varnish, 6 oral health, 3 dental caries, 3 water fluoridation, 2 topical applications of flour, 5 preventions in dentistry, 2 fluoride mouthrinses, 1 fluoride gel, 2 materials in dentistry. Based on the literature review above, it can be concluded that the use of fluoride varnish in pediatric dentistry includes several important aspects. Fluoride varnish has been proven effective in preventing dental caries in children. Its regular application can reduce the incidence of caries, especially in teeth that are susceptible to damage. The fluoride varnish application process is easy and painless, making it very suitable for use in children. This product is also safe if used according to established guidelines. Fluoride varnish can provide long-term protection against tooth decay. This is an important part of a comprehensive caries prevention program. The use of fluoride varnish also supports public health efforts by reducing the prevalence of caries in the pediatric population, especially in groups at high risk for caries. Fluoride varnish is generally well accepted by children compared to other caries prevention methods because its application is quick and easy. Conclusion. Overall, fluoride varnish is an important tool in the strategy of preventing dental caries in children, offering effective, safe, and well-accepted protection.

Abstract

Indonesia’s high disaster vulnerability necessitates highly competent emergency medical response volunteers. This training program aimed to enhance the emergency medicine management skills of Disaster Response Scouts in the Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY). Thirty participants from five sub-districts (Gunungkidul, Sleman, Kulonprogo, Bantul, and Yogyakarta City) attended the training held May 19, 2024, at the DIY Regional Scout Hall. The training integrated mini-lectures, small group discussions, and hands-on practice for a holistic approach to theory and practical skills. Pre-test and post-tests, along with simulation observations, evaluated the training's effectiveness. Results showed a significant increase in average scores from 50.83 (pre-test) to 86.25 (post-test, p < 0.0001, Wilcoxon Test), with 66.7% of participants achieving “very good” status post-training (compared to 13.3% pre-training). This training enhanced not only participant knowledge and skills but also fostered collaboration among DIY Regional Scouts, health institutions, and academia.

Abstract

Introduction: Oral health is an important part of overall body health. Children with disabilities are at risk or have chronic physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional conditions; therefore, they commonly require some assistance in maintaining their cleanliness, particularly oral hygiene. This study aims to determine oral hygiene status of students with special needs at special educational needs and disabilities school. Methods: This was a descriptive study with a cross-sectional design, using total sampling technique. The subjects were 36 students aged 10-28 years from Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) school. Data were collected using the Oral Hygiene Index Simplified (OHI-S) which are Simplified Debris Index (DI-S) and a Simplified Calculus Index (CI-S) index. Results: The students with disabilities at SEND school had an average OHI-S score of 1.6, with DI-S score of 1.7 and CI-S score of 1.5, which falls into the severe category. Conclusion: The oral hygiene of students with disabilities is generally in poor condition. It is necessary to enhance promotive and preventive efforts specifically for children at SEND school with disabilities to improve oral health.
