Abstract

This article explores socio-religious conflict resolution in Lombok through the lens of peace communication as a learning process embedded in power relations and cultural practices. While the state formally addressed conflict through mediation and interfaith dialogue under the discourse of harmony, mechanisms for preventive protection and trauma-sensitive recovery for minority groups remained insufficient. Consequently, conflict resolution practices tended to privilege social order and majoritarian norms over the substantive realization of freedom of religion or belief. Employing a qualitative case study approach, this research draws on in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation involving religious leaders, community actors, and conflict-affected minorities. The findings reveal that state-led dialogue largely reproduces a depoliticized notion of peace, where harmony is defined as the absence of visible tension rather than as a process of justice, recognition, and equality. In contrast, the Mareje community developed a grassroots model of peace communication grounded in local wisdom, particularly gawe rapah, which operates as a counter-hegemonic learning space. Through collective rituals, shared memory, and everyday interaction, this model enables the reconstruction of trust, the negotiation of difference, and the intergenerational transmission of coexistence values. This study argues that socio-religious conflict resolution in Lombok should be understood as a form of critical peace education, where learning functions not only to restore social relations but also to challenge dominant frameworks of harmony. By situating peace communication within local cultural praxis, this research contributes to critical peace studies and debates on inclusive and transformative conflict resolution.

Abstract

The spread of anti-sexual violence campaigns on social media such as the #metoo, #kitaAgni and #namabaikkampus movements raises public awareness about the issue. This can be seen in the rejection and public anger related to the news about the glorification of sex offenders who incidentally was a public figure when he was released from prison which was published in online media. Therefore, this article examines the implications of anti-sexual violence discourse on the glorification of sexual offenders in online media by using critical discourse analysis by Sara Mills which focuses on the position of subject-object and the position of readers in the news. This article shows that there is a discourse battle between the sex offenders who show resistance while the public continues to reject it simultaneously.

Abstract

This study examines the construction of media narratives on sexual violence and analyzes how Islamic popular media in Indonesia articulate this issue in cyberspace. The topic is significant because sexual violence is a global concern and a key target of the Sustainable Development Goals, while media coverage often reproduces gender bias, sexism, and misogynistic framing. Using qualitative content analysis and Walter Fisher’s narrative paradigm, this study analyzes discourse produced by three Islamic popular media outlets: MuslimahNews.net, BincangMuslimah.com, and Mubadalah.id. The findings show that Islamic popular media position themselves as platforms for education, religious literacy, and the prevention of sexual violence by promoting inclusive and gender-equitable narratives. However, narrative constructions differ according to each outlet’s ideological orientation. MuslimahNews.net frames sexual violence as a consequence of secular capitalist systems and proposes the Islamic system as the primary solution. BincangMuslimah.com attributes sexual violence to the erosion of human dignity and value inequality, advocating practical prevention measures, legal responses, and the involvement of religious leaders. Mubadalah.id constructs sexual violence as rooted in patriarchal culture, gender injustice, and biased religious interpretations, emphasizing the deconstruction of such interpretations and the promotion of shared social responsibility. These findings demonstrate that Islamic popular media offer diverse narrative strategies that can function as counter-narratives to gender-biased mainstream media and contribute to more ethical and inclusive public discourse on sexual violence.

Abstract

The role of women in peacebuilding has often been overshadowed by male-dominated discourse, particularly in contexts of extremist violence. Despite growing recognition of women’s contributions, their visibility and agency in digital peace initiatives remain underexplored. This research examines how women are constructed as active and reflective agents in peace discourse within cyberspace, negotiating socio-cultural and religious constraints. Data from this research were collected from two websites, Shebuildspeace.id (Indonesia) and Sistersinislam.org (Malaysia). Using a qualitative design, this research employed Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to analyze online narratives across textual, discursive, and socio-cultural dimensions. The findings reveal that both platforms foreground women’s agency in peacebuilding, emphasizing justice-oriented and inclusive practices while reflecting local norms and power structures. Shebuildspeace.id highlights women participation and practical grassroots peacebuilding initiatives, whereas Sistersinislam.org emphasizes women’s rights, equality, and social justice within a faith-based advocacy framework. These differences illustrate how women-led digital platforms construct peace and negotiate gender roles in line with their social, cultural, and contextual values. This research highlights the potential of digital media to expand women’s participation in peacebuilding and counter-extremism initiatives. Implications of this research include theoretical insights on public space and digital media, practical strategies for online peace initiatives, and policy recommendations supporting women-led peace and security agendas. Then, its limitations include the focus on only two platforms, which may not capture the full diversity of women-led digital peace discourse.

Abstract

Tomb pilgrimage is one of the religious traditions of Indonesian (especially in Lombok). It is strongly lives in society with various unique local wisdom rituals. Even though the tradition of grave pilgrimages has a long history as an Islamic identity, controversy over the prohibition of grave pilgrimages still occurs. Like the controversial statement by Salafi-Wahabi leader Mizan Qudsiyah in a hate-speech case which were broadcast on a YouTube channel entitled religious tourism to cemeteries. One indicator of religious moderation which is a pillar of nationality and diversity in Indonesia is acceptance of tradition. This research aims to find and analyze the motives of the pilgrims and the meaning of the messages from each ritual procession for the pilgrimage to the Keleang Tomb. The Keleang Tomb Pilgrimage is unique because it accommodates religious and cultural elements. At the same time, there are sacred values that must be understood and implemented in accordance with the advice of religious and traditional leaders. This research also examines the values of religious moderation in the Keleang Tomb pilgrimage tradition. Local traditions have the power to build togetherness, unite communities and avoid poverty. This research method is qualitative with an interpretive phenomenological approach which emphasizes the experiences of pilgrims. This study uses a communication perspective because every traditional and religious ritual involves two communication models, namely intrapersonal and interpersonal. In communication theory, the expectacy value emphasizes that there are hopes and values or beliefs that influence people's behavior in continuing to make pilgrimages to the Kaleang Tomb. Pilgrimage to the Keleang Tomb is not only to ask (pray) to Allah, but also as a form of gratitude (salametan) for the good things obtained. While the cemetery acts as an intermediary (wasilah).
