Abstract

The purposes of writing this thesis are: (1) To find out the teacher's efforts in improving students' English skills through the online process and (2) To find out how the students result from the efforts given by the teacher in improving English language skills through the online process. In this study, the researchers used: The method used is qualitative. The data were collected using interviews and documentation on English teachers, students, and SMK Kartika 1 Surabaya students. In this study, researchers used two interview methods: structured interview and semi-structured interview. The results of this study can be concluded that the teacher's efforts to improve students' abilities during online learning are through the WhatsApp application in which the teacher creates a WhatsApp chat group so that students can discuss with their friends without internet network constraints. In addition, most students showed a positive impression of the learning method via WhatsApp from those previously using the learning method through moodle e-learning.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out the factors causing students’ anxiety while reading aloud during English learning at the TKJ eleventh grade of SMK Nurul Yaqin Tlagah and to find out the teacher’s strategies to overcome the problems of students’ anxiety while reading aloud during English learning at the TKJ eleventh grade of SMK Nurul Yaqin Tlagah. This study uses a qualitative method. The subjects in this study were class 11 TKJ of SMK Nurul Yaqin Tlagah. Data was collected using interviews and observation to determine the factors causing students’ anxiety. The observation results showed that fear of making mistakes was the biggest factor causing students’ anxiety. Based on interviews, various factors of causing students’ anxiety while reading aloud during English learning. There are at least five factors found in this study: they feel that reading aloud in English learning is difficult, shyness and lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, fear of being laughed at or mocked by their friends or classmates, and lack of vocabulary. In order to reduce the students’ anxiety, there are some strategies the teacher can apply while reading aloud during English learning. They are good preparation, positive thinking, building a good atmosphere while learning, peer groups, and using game methods while learning.

Abstract

This study aimed to discover aspects of cultural content and describe how the culture is represented in English textbooks using descriptive qualitative method with content analysis. The data were collected from the English textbook "Bahasa Inggris," designed for the first tenth-grade Senior High School semester based on the revised 2013 curriculum. The result shows that it is mainly presented through Universality across cultures in categories of culture (39,6%). The target culture (14,9%) has the slightest intention in this textbook. Next, most of the culture with the most minor parts is Perspective (10%). Meanwhile, the sense of culture was dominated by aesthetic sense (42,7%). Semantic sense (10%) has the slightest intention in this textbook. In this textbook, many cultures are not specific to any particular culture or country. In addition, this research also found an unbalanced quantity of data on this cultural aspect.

Abstract

This article delves into the profound impact of figurative language in Pink's song "Just Give Me a Reason," unravelling the poetic brilliance that elevates music to new heights of emotional expression. Through a comprehensive analysis of metaphors, similes, symbolism, personification, apostrophe, synecdoche, metonymy, paradox, hyperbole, understatement, irony, alliteration, allusion, and onomatopoeia, the study reveals how Pink's masterful use of language creates a compelling lyrical landscape. Figurative language emerges as a powerful tool for artists to communicate complex emotions, foster vivid imagery, and forge deep connections with their audience. As listeners immerse themselves in this enchanting world, they embark on an emotional journey, experiencing the raw beauty of human experiences and the enduring power of artistic expression in the realm of music.
