Abstract

Rapid urbanization and post-disaster recovery in developing cities present significant challenges for municipal solid waste management, escalating operational costs and environmental burdens. The primary logistical bottleneck is often the inefficient placement of intermediate waste infrastructure. This study addresses this gap by proposing and validating a novel hybrid spatial decision support framework for the optimal siting of Temporary Waste Transfer Stations (TWTS) in Meulaboh, Indonesia. The framework integrates a Geographic Information System (GIS) with the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and a Random Forest (RF) machine learning model. AHP structures the problem using expert knowledge and local regulatory standards to generate an initial suitability map. To overcome AHP's linearity and subjectivity, this map generates pseudo-labeled data to train the RF model, which learns complex, non-linear relationships among spatial factors. The RF model demonstrated exceptional performance with an Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.96. The framework evaluated 43 villages (Gampong), identifying specific areas in Meureubo and Johan Pahlawan as top candidates due to favorable land use and proximity to road networks. This hybrid approach offers a robust, transparent, and scalable methodology for post-disaster urban infrastructure planning.

Abstract

This community service activity was carried out to preserve Acehnese culture for the younger generation of the diaspora in Kampung Acheh, Kota Yan, Kedah Darul Aman, Malaysia, through Intergenerational Cultural Transmission. This activity was carried out against the backdrop of concerns about the loss of Acehnese cultural identity among the younger generation, who tend to be influenced by globalization and the process of cultural assimilation. In collaboration with the Institute of Social Sciences at Universiti Putra Malaysia, training and guidance were provided to the local community, involving young people and the older generation, related to cultural preservation in the form of preserving the Acehnese language and documenting culture in the digital field. Cultural preservation groups were formed at the village level and sustainable cultural education modules were developed. This activity is expected to be a solution to the weakening of Acehnese cultural identity among the diaspora and to strengthen its preservation in the future. This activity integrates information technology and optimization processes to accelerate cultural preservation efficiently and effectively.

Abstract

The phenomenon of marine mammal stranding is a complex conservation issue, with species identification often hindered by degraded carcass conditions. This research aimed to identify the species of a stranded marine mammal found in the waters of Aceh Jaya, Indonesia, using both morphological and molecular approaches. Fieldwork was conducted from August 2023 to January 2024 at Ketapang Beach, Krueng Sabee, Aceh Jaya. Initial morphological identification, based on observed physical characteristics and existing literature, showed consistency with Kogia breviceps. However, severe specimen degradation prevented accurate identification of several key features (gills and body color), highlighting the inherent limitations of morphological methods for degraded carcasses. To overcome these limitations, molecular identification was performed. Tissue samples were subjected to DNA extraction using the DNeasy Blood and Tissue Kit, followed by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) amplification of the mitochondrial Control Region (D-loop) gene using L15812/H16498 primers. Agarose gel electrophoresis confirmed successful amplification of a 523 bp target DNA fragment, although a smear indicating degradation was observed. DNA sequencing was subsequently performed and analyzed using MEGA 11 software and the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) algorithm against the NCBI GenBank database. BLAST analysis definitively identified the stranded marine mammal as Kogia breviceps, with a Query Cover of 93-95% and Percent Identity of 98.80-99.32% compared to reference sequences. This study concludes that molecular identification is crucial and accurate for species determination of degraded stranded marine mammals. This research recommends strengthening national stranding response protocols to include molecular sampling and enhancing genetic laboratory capacity to support marine mammal conservation efforts in Indonesia
