Abstract

The human need for sugar as an additional ingredient to give sweet taste to food and drinks is very high. However, excessive consumption of sugar can cause problems, especially for people with obesity and diabetes. Therefore, an alternative sweetener is needed to replace sugar which does not have harmful effects on health and is low in calories, one of which is stevia sweetener. The purpose of this activity is for the community/medicinal plant farmers in the Sungkai Park Memorial Area to know about the types of plants that have health benefits such as the Stevia plant as a natural sweetener that can be consumed for health and can be stored for a long time. The activity was carried out at the Self-Help Agriculture and Rural Training Center (P4S) in Sungkai Village, Sungkai Green Park Ecotourism, Lambung Bukit Village, Padang City. This activity was carried out in three stages, namely: 1. counseling and training on how to make good quality traditional medicine namely Stevia, 2. practice of making Stevia leaf extract products, and 3. evaluation. The results of the implementation of the activity were that it could increase public awareness and awareness of the use of Stevia leaves in making health drinks. Abstract

Indonesia has a high biodiversity, which can be relied upon as a potential source of medicinal materials. One of the medicinal plants in Indonesia is Kaempferia galanga, which demonstrates various pharmacological properties, including antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, and antiangiogenic effects. However, directly extracting active compounds from plants requires a considerable amount of biomass. To address this challenge, utilizing endophytic bacteria associated with these plants presents a promising alternative. Consequently, the antibacterial activity of endophytic bacterial isolates from K. galanga leaves needs to be investigated. This study is an experimental laboratory investigation conducted in vitro. Two isolates demonstrated antibacterial activity: isolate code DR4 inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli (3 ± 0.5 mm), while isolate DR10 inhibited the growth of four bacteria: Bacillus subtilis (5 ± 0 mm), Staphylococcus aureus (1.5 ± 0.5 mm), Escherichia coli (1 ± 0 mm), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (1 ± 0 mm). Disc diffusion tests using ethyl acetate extracts of isolate DR10 showed the highest antibacterial activity at a concentration of 10,000 ppm. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was determined to be 156.2 ppm against B. subtilis, while the Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) was >625 ppm. Molecular identification showed that isolate DR 10 had 100% similarity to Bacillus sp. TS8. The active compound suspected to have antibacterial properties is pyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrazine-1,4-dione, hexahydro-3-(2-methylpropyl)-, with the highest abundance.

Abstract

Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA) are groups of plants traditionally cultivated in home gardens and used as sources of natural medicine. One of the widely utilized TOGA plants is Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera Lam.), known for their high nutritional content and various pharmacological benefits. Research shows that Moringa leaves contain bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and phenolic acids, which support health benefits, including antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. This community service activity was conducted at Al-Hidayah Orphanage with the aim of enhancing the community’s understanding and skills in utilizing TOGA, particularly Moringa leaves, through herbal tea-making training. Using a qualitative approach, the activities included an initial survey, counseling, practical training, and evaluations through pre-test and post-test questionnaires to measure participants' knowledge improvement. The results showed a significant increase in participants’ understanding of TOGA benefits and Moringa leaf processing into herbal tea, with knowledge levels rising from an initial 16.7% to 91.3% after the training. This increase indicates that counseling and hands-on training effectively improved community awareness and skills. Additionally, the activity introduced the potential for developing herbal products from local plants, which could provide health benefits and economic opportunities through Moringa leaf-based herbal tea production. To sustain the program, further training is recommended to enhance participants’ proficiency in processing TOGA, especially as value-added herbal products. Collaboration with educational institutions is also suggested to expand research and development on TOGA products within the community.
