Abstract

It is important to teach children about the need to maintain and protect Lake Sentani on a regular basis. Various activities have been carried out in some villages around Lake Sentani to increase children ‘s knowledge and concern for Lake Sentani. Environmental literacy on Lake Sentani was taught through stories and pictures to increase children's awareness of the environment in and around Lake Sentani. The program was carried out in Yokiwa Village in cooperation with Village Library: Sanggar Napas Danau Sentani, for ten months, starting in March and will end on December 2023. Socialization activities were carried out on May 6 and June 23, 2023, which were then followed by storytelling activities on June 24, 2023, and coloring activities on July 1, 2023. Stories about fish of Lake Sentani and Sentani folklore are told to children, then continued with them coloring the pictures. Evaluation of activities is carried out by asking children to retell these stories in their own words and discussing actions that can be taken to protect the environment of Lake Sentani. Children were actively listening to the stories which showed their ability to answer the questions given after and their good response to what they should do to their environment. Coloring and listening to story tales are very interesting activities for kids so they participated in them with great enthusiasm. Storytelling and coloring activities are some effective ways to remind children to protect their environment. Abstract

The Wali Nibhi Reading House Group, also known as the Yoboi Reading House, was established in November 2019 in Yoboi Village, Sentani, Papua, with a focus on literacy improvement and women's empowerment. The group is predominantly composed of women, making it well-suited to develop skills in producing snakehead fish chips. However, they still face challenges in terms of skills and facilities. The existing skills are not yet sufficient to process fish into value-added products. The community's high dependence on the fisheries sector makes the local economy vulnerable to fluctuations in catch and environmental impacts. Training on processing snakehead fish into low-calorie chips through baking could address these issues. The method used is community-based training. Training in the production of fish stick chips and atom crackers has provided the community with new knowledge and skills. This program is crucial for local economic empowerment, teaching processing techniques and entrepreneurial skills that can increase income and well-being. The training utilizes local natural resources and strengthens the community's self-reliance and competitiveness in a broader market.

Abstract

Papua’s freshwater ecosystems in the western part of New Guinea have begun to record widespread introductions of invasive species over the past decade. This lake's most dominant and common exotic species is Amphilophus labiatus (Günther, 1864). A study was conducted to document the length-weight relationship and condition factor of these fish in Lake Sentani. From June to August 2019, fish were caught using floating gillnets at six locations around the lake. Total length (TL) (mm), body depth (mm), and body weight (grams) were measured, and condition factor based on gender, body weight, and body length were observed in 345 fish, including 264 males and 81 males. The growth pattern of A. labiatus is positively allometric, with b values ranging from 3.19 to 3. 20 and coefficients of determination (r2) ranging from 0.84 to 0.87. Although the average body length of A. labiatus males was shorter than females, condition factor (CF) values were not significantly different between the sexes and ranged from 0. 64 to 2.03 (0.97 ± 1.17, mean ± SD). For males, it went from 0.67 to 1.19 (0.94 ± 0.13 mean ± SD). However, monthly CF data show a significant decrease in CF in August, suggesting that spawning events occur in late July or early August. A. labiatus grows well and colonizes habitats throughout Lake Sentani.

Abstract

Staurastrum is a microalgae from the family of Desmidiaceae which is abundant in freshwater. The purpose of this study was to determine the diversity of Staurastrum and the abundance of the population of Staurastrum in the Sentani Lake Jayapura. The study was conducted in March 2018 in the Sentani Lake Jayapura. The sampling method used was the survey method by sampling water in 6 locations (Kampung Yakonde, Ifale, Hobong, Kalkhote, Ayapo, Puay) on the edge and center of the lake. The results showed that 4 species of Staurastrum on the Sentani Lake were S. arachne, S. diacathum, S. gracile and S. incisum The abundance of the Staurastrum population highest at the location of Ayapo (103), Puay (94), Hobong (89), Kalkhote (81), Ifale (77) and Yakonde (8). In terms of the similarity index, there are 7 sampling points that are very similar, 23 that are similar, 20 that are dissimilar, and 16 that are very dissimilar. The difference in sampling location shows that sampling in the central part of the lakes has a higher population abundance compared to edge of the lake. In conclusion there are 4 species of Staurastrum, the location of Ayapo is higher in abundance, and the central part of the Lake is higher in abundance.    Key words: Desmidiaceae; Jayapura; Lake; Sentani; Staurastrum.

This activity is in collaboration with the Papua Central Statistics Agency (BPS). The aim is to provide assistance to Wambena Village officials in compiling monographs and village profiles. This assistance is very important because as a village that is experiencing expansion, it is very important to provide systematic, complete, accurate and integrated information data to the community regarding government administration. This activity focuses on assistance in preparing Monographs and Village Profiles using a participatory and educational approach. The implementation of this activity is a form of facilitation and implementation of Minister of Home Affairs Regulation Number 13 of 2012 concerning Village and Subdistrict Monographs and Minister of Home Affairs Regulation Number 12 of 2007 concerning Guidelines for Compiling and Utilizing Village and Subdistrict Profile Data.
