Abstract

This research aims to find out the errors occur in students’ translation product, this is a qualitative research and the object of the research is 4th- semester college students. The data was analyzed by using an error category by ATA’s standardized error making. The analysis reveals that the most errors occured on students’ translation are literalness: 258 occurrences (30,71%), misunderstanding: 221 occurrences (26,31%), terminology: 111 occurrences (13,21%), the last omission: 88 occurrences (10,48%), faithfulness: 73 occurrences (8,69%), then the next is grammar: 40 occurrences (4,76%), cohesion: 38 occurrences (4,52%) and the last is syntax: 11 occurrences (1,31%). Based on the research result it can be concluded that students’ knowledge of translation techniques is very limited, that caused errors in translating the text. In translating process, they must master translation techniques to translate certain text. This research will probably give some literature about the errors made by students, so it can be used by the teacher of translation material to give more lesson of translation techniques and give them more exercise in translating certain text. Then for the students, this research can be used as guidance to be more aware of errors that occur in translation process, for another researcher should conduct other research with another point of view.

Abstract

The purpose of the thesis is to find out the Id, Ego, and Superego of the main characters, that is, Gregor Samsa, the traveling salesman who transforms into a giant insect, and Metamorphosis, written by Franz Kafka and published in 1915. The method used in this study is descriptive-qualitative. The technique of collecting data is reading the novel repeatedly and underlying the necessary lines and quotations in the novella. The result shows that there are 24 quotations, which consist of 9 quotations of Id, 6 quotations of Ego, 7 quotations of Superego, and 2 most prominent reflections on Kafka’s personal life.

Abstract

This study is to find out the form of space presented in the short story written by Indra Tranggono entitled “Kisah Kota Kwon.” The study analyses the space, in this case is place and chaotic space to describe the opposition as inheritance of colonials. Although the short story has no direct relation with colonialism, yet by doing the study, the nation (colonial space) can be seen clearly. The method used in the study is descriptive qualitative. The results show that the place in the short story can be represented by the Kwon town, meanwhile the chaotic space can be seen from the journey taken by Molly as the representation of self conflict to the town itself.

Abstract

This article is to figure out the motif of Wordsworth’s My Heart Leaps Up and Frost’s Out Out as well as to reveal its relation with the social situation in time the poems were created. Through the motif of the poems, it is assumed that it represents the social situation happened in England’ 17th century and early America’s 19th century. Written in different way and time, both poems are presumed to have similar point of view toward the condition of real life happened during the industrial revolution both in England and America. Wordsworth’s My Heart Leaps Up was written in 1802 in England, while Frost’s Out Out was in 1916 in America. Although Frost’s Out Out is written a hundred year later than the former, both poems are believed to have similar motif and theme. To prove, an analysis of the symbols on both poems is conducted to find the structure of the poems i.e. the motif and theme. By using sociological approach, the finding structure will support the elaboration of relation between the poems and its social situation.

Abstract

This essay is to figure out the hegemonic strategy in Ajidarma’s short story entitled Ibu yang Anaknya Diculik Itu. The story was written in 2008 through online mass media, Kompas. It is believed that the story is loaded with critical perspectives toward current social and political issue. The critics represent the way the author sees the issue and efforts to create self-awareness and self-enrichment. Using Gramsci’s hegemonic theory, the story is analysed. The essay shows that Ajidarma’s story functions as hegemonic sites. The ideology of humanity is simultaneously proposed to the readers through the character of Mother. Ajidarma disagrees the inequity caused by political power and he believes that every human being has right to get immunity from the political violence.

Abstract

This study is to analyze the English materials design of Hospitality Industry College of Purwokerto (HICP) from the aspects of need analysis and principles of ESP’s contribution to the creation of materials design of HICP. This study uses descriptive qualitative method and interview, documentation, observation and questionnaire delivered to the students, the ESP teacher, and the stakeholder of HICP to collect the data. To analyze the data, three main steps of data analysis, which are data reduction, display and conclusion, are used. The result shows that the English materials design of HICP does not meet all of the need analysis result and the principles of ESP. The materials design of HICP only covers the students’ learning interest, the goal, the English usage and the setting of frequency, as well as the nature of the learning task and a correct language use.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the informal strategy used by the pedicab drivers in Malioboro Street and the implementation of English. The type of this study is a descriptive qualitative in which the data are taken from in-depth interview. This study finds that the pedicab drivers in Malioboro Street commonly use the strategies of informal learning to learn English such as learning independently, memorization and repetition method, and learning everytime and everywhere. There are several factors affecting the success of pedicab drivers in acquiring English such as age, educational background, and motivation. The pedicab drivers use English to communicate with foreign tourist and some of them implement their English not only at the work place but also at home for joke with their family.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out English vowel pronunciation problems faced by French teenagers aged 14 to 20 lived in Geneva, and to find out the internal and external factors of pronunciation problems faced by French teenagers aged 14 to 20 lived in Geneva. This is a descriptive qualitative study in which the data are taken from interview, test and documentation. The techniques of data analysis are data reduction and data display. Based on the result of the study, the study finds out that French teenagers still have some difficulty in English vowel pronunciation because English vowel and French vowel are different but also most French teenagers have some lack of confidence in speaking English. French teenagers experience English vowel pronunciation difficulties with most of vowel mistake are 6 vowels such as /ӕ/, /ʊ/, /ʌ/, /ͻ/, /ɔ: /, and /u/.
