Abstract

This study is to analyse the diphthong mispronunciation of debate participants from Indonesia especially students in Senior High School of North Aceh Regional. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The writer uses A.C Gimson (1970) and Ramelan (1999) theory about English pronunciation to support the study of diphthong. The source of data in this research is the English debate competition video in Aceh entitled “English Debate Senior High School and Equivalent Level Aceh Regional” as posted in youtube on April, 2015 from Al Azhar Thaha youtube account with 930 total subscribers. The writer uses some techniques to collect the data such as: downloading, listening carefully, and transcribing the debate video from youtube. To analyse the data the writer uses Dividing Key Factors Techniques. The steps are: identifying, categorizing and drawing the conclusion. The writer finds that there are 3 most mispronounced diphthong based on its occurrence such as [eɪ], [əʊ], [aɪ].The errors in pronouncing English diphthong were assumed to be affected by 4 factors which are: misimitating, mispronouncing caused by cultural sound adjustification, and dialect.

Abstract

Slang language is an informal language that tends to be discovered and used by Americans movies. However in fact, it is not just the Americans people use the slang language but also the British. They use slang in movies. Thus, the aim of this thesis is to describe the formation of slang language found in British movie that is Harry Potter and Philosopher’s Stone written by J.K. Rowling. To answer the question the writers use George Yule theory about slang word formation. This research uses descriptive qualitative as the research method. The research finds that there are 141 slang word formation in the script; 71 words for blending, 38 words for derivation, 10 words for clipping, 8 words for borrowing, 6 words for compounding, 3 words for coinage, 2 words for conversion, 2 words for multiple processes and the last 1 word for acronym. The result shows that blending is the most dominant word formation of slang language in Harry Potter and Philosopher’s Stone. It is a combination of two words or more into one word.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyse English noun phrase formation on brochures of five hotels in Yogyakarta. This is a descriptive qualitative study in which data are taken from the hotels at Malioboro Street, Yogyakarta. They are Amaris Hotels, Grand Puri Saron Hotels, Grand Puri Saron boutique Hotels, Mataram 2 Hotels, and Pyrenees Hotels. The techniques of data analysis are dividing all the phrase in brochures into its phrase types, rewriting each phrase using tree diagram, describing the formation of noun phrase from the hotels’ brochures, and drawing conclusion. The study finds that there are 221 noun phrases found in brochures of five hotels in Yogyakarta. Based on the result, there are 16 rule types of noun phrases found. Those rules of English noun phrase consist of: 1 NP → Adj + N + N + N, 2 NP → Det + Adj + Adj + N, NP → Adj + N, NP → N + N, NP → Det + N, NP → Adj + Adj + N, NP → N+ N + N, NP → N + Prep + N, NP → Adj+ N + N, NP → Adj + N + Prep + N, NP → V + N, NP → Adj + N + Prep +N, NP → Adv + Adj + N, NP → Det + N +Prep + Det + N, NP → N + Prep + V, NP → N + Adj. The domination of the rule type of English noun phrases formation on hotel brochures is NP → N + N.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze male and female language used in “Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle” movie. This descriptive qualitative method research is supported by diagrams showing the data frequency of appearance on each category. The data is taken from utterances by characters in “Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle”. The source of data collection in this study is the script of the movie. Using Wardhaugh theory, the result shows that there are five types of male language in “Jumanji Welcome to the jungle” movie. They are adverbs (16) pronouns “you” (26), expletives and swear statement (29), imperative sentences (31) and modulation (104). Nine types of female language in “Jumanji Welcome to the jungle” movie are adverbs (2), color words (3), correctness of grammar (4), tag questions (4), pronouns”we” (12), diminutives (20), adjectives (27), expletives and swear statement (28), and modulation (30). The most frequent types of language used by male and female characters in “Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle” movie is modulation. The writers found 104 modulation of male language and 30 modulation in female language. The function of modulation for male in communicating is to ask something directly, while for female is to ask something politely.

Abstract

The writers choose to research the language style because everyone has their own language style whether in spoken or written context. This is where the writers find and want to know the problem regarding how the language styles are used in written text, especially in story book. The aim of this study is to describe language style in “The Big Read” story book combined by team of Global Campaign for Education at April 2009. This is a descriptive qualitative study in which the data are taken from “The Big Read” story book. Based on the result of the study, the study finds out that language style used in “The Big Read” story book. The research finds that there are four types of language style in “The Big Read” story book: (1) formal style, (2) consultative style, (3) casual style, (4) intimate style. The mostly type of language style that occurs in “The Big Read” story book is casual style. The finding of this study shows the calculating of language style, which are: 51 casual styles, 17 intimate styles, 10 formal styles, and 3 consultative styles. From the whole of the analysis and the data, the result of this study is covered and answers the research question.

Abstract

This study reveals the meaning of short story written by Herman RN entitled “Bungkusan” using the five system of Barthesian codes i.e. hermeneutic, cultural, symbolic, narrative and semantic code. Using the method of descriptive analysis, this study presents the meaning of the short story by explaining one by one the code meaning of the text. The result of the study shows that through five system of Barthesian codes, the humanity facts containing in the short story can be realized i.e. the protest toward the uncertainty of Aceh’s social life. An unstoppable political conflict, rapid modernization, as well as natural disasters are the factors underlining the facts found in the short story.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study finds out the transformation of narrative structure in two literary works that is a novel entitled True Story Gitta Sessa Wanda Cantika by Agnes Danovar and a movie by Harris Nizam entitled Surat Kecil Untuk Tuhan. The intertextuality theory in reception becomes the base of the study. The technique of obtaining the data is by reading the novel and watching the movie carefully. All data is categorized based on the topic of discussion then described in details. The result shows that there are transformation in narrative structure of both works each on the characterization, settings, and plot. The transformation indicates that the novel is responded and given meaning in the following work i.e. movie by Harris Nizam. The characterization is seen from the aspects of naming, personality, and internal conflict. The setting is from the addition and reduction of setting, meanwhile the plot is seen from the startup of the story, the complexness of the conflict, and the presentation of ending.

Abstract

This research mainly aims to find out the correlation between the students’ vocabulary mastery and their English-Indonesian translation ability on the eleventh-grade students of SMK Al-Huda Bumiayu in the academic year 2021/2022. This research is a correlational study. The method of collecting data uses tests and documentation. The score data are obtained from the vocabulary test and translation test. The result of hypothesis testing is the value of rxy = 0,513 > r table = 0,246 (for the 5% level) and 0,207 (for the 1% level). Therefore, it can be concluded that Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. It means that there is a significant correlation between the student’ vocabulary mastery and their English-Indonesian translation ability on the eleventh-grade students of SMK Al-Huda Bumiayu in the academic year 2021/2022 and categorized in middle level correlation. Abstract

This study aims to find out what are the educational values reflected from the characters in film “Freedom Writers” directed by Richard LaGravenese. The characters that reflect the educational values in the film are Erin, Eva, Marcus, Ben, Tito, Victoria, and Miep Gies. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The research’s results show from 18 values of education by National Education Ministry the writer only finds 17 values i.e. religiosity, honesty, tolerance, discipline, hardworking, creativity, independent, democracy, curiosity, nationalism, patriotism, appreciation of achievement, friendliness/ communication, love of peace, reading interest, social awareness, and responsibility, while the values that is not in the film is environmental awareness. Abstract

This study related to the aspects of fantasy: the characteristics, functions, and kinds of fantasy. The aims of this thesis are to describe the characteristics, functions and kinds of fantasy realized on Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. To answer the question, the writer uses Brian Stableford theory about fantasy. This thesis uses descriptive qualitative approach. The findings show that based on its aspects, the novel belongs to fantasy literature. The aspects are such as the characteristics, functions and kinds. The characteristics found are story, common characters, evocation of another world, the use of magic and supernatural power, a clear sense of good and evil, and quests. The functions found are fantasy escapes reality, fantasy creates reality, and fantasy reflects reality. The kinds of fantasy found are heroic, High, and portal fantasy. To conclude it, this novel actually meets the aspects of fantasy literature.
