Abstract

This study investigates the discrimination against three Afro-American women in Hidden Figures. Critical Discourse Analysis proposed by Fairclough (2012) was used in this study to deconstruct the discrimination and provide solutions to tackle the problem. The CDA was supported by the analysis on language through Systemic Functional Grammar by Halliday (2004) and the analysis on body language by Jäger and Maier (2009). The result shows that the discrimination in the movie can be differentiated into discrimination based on the level and the cause. The discrimination based on the level includes the individual, institutional and structural discrimination. Based on the cause, discrimination based on race (racism) and discrimination based on gender (sexism) are illustrated in the movie. The racism is developed from racist ideology, while the sexism is caused by sexist ideology. Abstract

The LGBT phenomenon is not a novel thing nowadays. Many controversies have arisen in response to whether it can be accepted or not. Some countries, especially Islamic countries including Indonesia insists that this is unacceptable because it violates the Islamic laws as stated in Quran and Hadith. Other countries, especially the western countries considered this to be normal and tolerable. The concern on this issue has also encouraged the actors in the movie industries to create some work representing how this phenomenon occurs. One of which is found in Chloe movie. This gender-related study aimed at analyzing how the gender identity, sexual orientation and gender fluidity were portrayed in the movie. It included how the main character perceive her gender identity and sexual orientation, why the gender fluidity existed and what reasons were underlying such behaviors. The analysis on the movie was carried out by using lesbian/ gay criticism. The result of the study shows that gender is a fluid entity. Admitting to belong to a particular gender identity requires someone to perform some roles which are agreed by the society. However, one’s gender identity does not always represent his or her sexual orientation. Some people even change their sexual orientation or gender fluidity. The movie reveals that heterosexual deprivation causes the gender fluidity. Lack of intimacy between husbands and wives may influence each of them to get the intimacy from people of the same gender. Last but not least, communication between husbands and wives plays a vital role to maintain the sexual relations that indirectly maintains the straightness of the gender identity and sexual orientation.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the use of flouted conversational maxims found in “A Clean, Well-lighted Place” short story by Ernest Hemingway. This is qualitative research with content analysis research design. The results of the study reveal two main findings. First, from the total data of 50, 27 (54%) data contain the flouted conversational maxims. The highest frequency of flouting is found in the maxim of relevance in which there are 11 data (40.74%) and 4 data (14.81%) represent the lowest frequency which is the flouting of the maxim of manner. The number of flouting in the maxim of quantity and quality is 7 (25.93%) and 5 (18.52%) respectively. Second, those maxims are flouted for certain reasons such as avoiding the speaker to be direct and impolite when talking about darkness and loneliness, being old and nothingness as the themes of the short story. By flouting the maxim of quality, the speaker tries to keep a secret. The speaker avoids responding to negative opinions or showing his disagreement by flouting the maxim of quantity. The speaker’s flouting on the maxim of quality is done to maintain the conversation and to keep a secret the speaker the maxim of manner is flouted. Thus, flouting the conversational maxims is sometimes done by the interlocutors which does not necessarily mean that they do not want to maintain the conversation, yet it is another way to avoid the conversation breakdowns. Based on the result of the research, the study implies that it is important for both interlocutors to have common belief that successful communication requires them to cooperate and maintain the communication either by adhering the conversational maxims or even flouting the maxims due to certain reasons

Abstract

Different educational achievements between students from high socioeconomic status and those from lower socioeconomic status in universities are said to be caused by unequal access to learning resources. This research aimed at investigating students’ perspectives on the use of Duolingo in EFL learning to eliminate socioeconomic discrepancies in the university. This research used a descriptive qualitative design. Interviews were used to gather data from one male and two female higher education students majoring in the English Language Education program. This research shows two main findings. First, students have positive attitudes and enjoyable experiences in using Duolingo contributed by its fun, easy, accessible, and fun nature. Second, Duolingo, offering free charge for all users, can eliminate socioeconomic discrepancies among students in the university because it can be accessed by students from any socioeconomic condition.  It implies that Duolingo as an AI tool can be used by both educators and students around the world as an accessible language teaching and learning resource. Therefore, there is a need to develop students’, educators’, and parents’ awareness of the utilization of Duolingo as a solution for the limited access to learning resources due to socioeconomic barriers.

Abstract

This qualitative descriptive study intends to investigate how student agency skills were affected by online EFL instruction during the COVID-19 epidemic, as well as how it would have affected future learning and teaching. The study focuses on pre-service student teachers in Indonesia, aiming to equip them with the necessary skills for academic success and the modern job market. The results show that learners' agency was essential to their adjustment to the online learning environment, especially when taking into account elements like choice, fairness, participation, interest, motivation, self-efficacy, teacher support, and peer support. Moreover, the study highlights the importance of fostering student agency in EFL teaching and learning activities, which not only provide content-based learning but also create collaborative language learning environments that empower learners to utilize a variety of online resources and tools. Overall, this study provides insights into the effective implementation of online language education during unprecedented times while emphasizing the importance of student agency for successful EFL learning and teaching.

Abstract

Facts related to religious ways that tend to be radical and extreme can threaten the reason and attitude of the younger generation, including students. Therefore, an innovation study focusses on the positioning of students in order to act as producers against extremist narratives is needed. This can be done with intensive education and mentoring of good and directed writing skills through a literature literacy program with religious moderation perspectives for students. Therefore, this research is aimed to describe the study of innovation through a literature literacy program with religious moderation perspectives at the Darul Ma'arif Cikedung Islamic boarding school, Majalengka. This research is descriptive qualitative research using the case study method. Based on the results of the research, it is found that the understanding of moderation does not have to be conveyed rigidly through classes that tend to be conventional but can also be done through light writing of the literary genre as a form of innovation in the spread of Islam rahmatan lil alamin. This is proven by the results obtained by the Darul Ma'arif students who can manifest their moderate understanding through literary works in the form of short stories.

Abstract

Numerical literacy is one of the skills needed by students. Referring to the low results of the AKM (minimum competency assessment), especially in the numeracy literacy component, it is necessary to develop numeracy literacy from an early age in schools. This numeracy literacy relates to students' skills in representing mathematical objects or situations, using problem-solving strategies, and reasoning and giving reasons. This study aimed to identify the learning obstacles faced by students in the development of numeracy literacy at the elementary school or madrasah ibtidaiyah, design a didactic design based on the learning obstacles found, implement the initial didactic design, and analyze the implementation process to produce a revised didactic design. This research was a Didactical Design Research (DDR). The participants in this study were 33 fourth-grade students. Data collection was carried out by tests, interviews, and observations. The results of the study show that the initial didactical design is developed in the form of several didactic situations packaged in the form of a 3D Big Book by paying attention to the level of thinking and the level of students' numeracy literacy skills as well as a guidebook for teachers which contains steps of didactic situations, predictions of student responses, and didactic anticipation. In the implementation of the initial didactic design, it is found that fourth-grade students have begun to be able to develop their numeracy literacy skills. The initial didactic design was revised by adding several steps or explanations to the didactic situation to help students according to their level of numeracy literacy.

Abstract

Culture Specific Items (CSIs) have become challenges for translators in transferring one language to another. This research aimed at investigating the types of CSIs and the translation strategies applied by the translation in the translation of Wonogiri guidebook. A qualitative method was used to collect and analyze the data from the guidebook. The study shows that the CSIs found in the guidebook can be classified into 6 main categories: (1) toponyms, (2) anthroponyms, (3) legal systems, (4) food and drink, (5) religious celebration, and (6) local institution. Toponyms are the most categories found (62.5%). The toponyms were categorized further into 7 categories including 1 additional category, given names of plants. Additionally, the study also reveals that the translator mainly used 2 categories of translation strategy, namely preservation and addition. Both strategies indicate that the translator applies foreignization strategies. It implies that the translator attempts to maintain the originality and uniqueness of the CSIs in the target text. It suggests that translators’ decisions to apply certain translation strategies in translating CSIs reflect their discretion regarding their perception of CSIs and consideration on the translation quality.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic, which lasted for more than 2 years, had a tremendous impact in Indonesia. One of its impacts on the education sector that is still affecting the post-pandemic period is learning loss. Learning loss is a phenomenon where students lose their knowledge and skills due to certain conditions. Learning loss also affects students’ psychology. In speaking learning, anxiety is one of the students' obstacles to speaking fluently. This study aimed to investigate the strategies employed by students to mitigate speaking anxiety in the post-pandemic era. The case study design was used to do an in-depth investigation of complex problems regarding students' speaking anxiety in a school. The study involved six students in grade seven at a junior high school in West Java, Indonesia, as participants. The participants selected were those representing different speaking abilities based on their speaking test results. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews. The findings show that students employ several strategies to mitigate their speaking anxiety, including preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, and peer-seeking. In other words, those strategies reflect students’ resilience to deal with learning loss in the post-pandemic era.  This study is intended to serve as a valuable resource for educators and EFL learners by providing strategies to alleviate speaking anxiety effectively.
