Abstract

Abstract Turmeric and tamarind herbal medicine is one of the drinks with turmeric and tamarind as raw materials which is quite widely consumed by the community, either in liquid form or in powder form. Jamu turmeric acid can be used to prevent the negative effects of free radicals on the body because there are active antioxidant compounds, besides that it can be used as a natural antioxidant. There are many natural antioxidants in nature, one of which is in traditional medicine. The content of Jamu turmeric acid is curcuminoids where this compound is useful as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. This study aims to determine the antioxidant activity of instant turmeric powder drink produced by of UMKM Healthy Partners, Kiringan Bantul herbal tourism village, using the DPPH method (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl). The absorbance measurement to determine the antioxidant activity of each sample of turmeric tamarind powder was tested using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at a maximum wavelength of 516 nm. Determination of antioxidant activity by the DPPH method is expressed by the IC50 (Inhibiton Concentration 50) value. The results showed that the antioxidant activity of the instant turmeric powder drink (Curcuma domestica val.-tamarindus indica l.) produced by Mitra Sehat SME in the Jamu Kiringan Tourism Village, Bantul, was included in the very weak category with an IC50 value of each sample successively. The participants were sample A of (276.005 ppm), sample B of (265.434 ppm), and sample C of (256.183 ppm). Keywords: Antioxidant, DPPH, Turmeric Instant Powder, UV-Vis Spectrophotometer and IC50 value.

Abstract

Excessive UV B radiation can lead to premature skin aging, but research suggests that turmeric (Curcuma domestica Val.) may have antioxidant compounds that could serve as a sunscreen. To investigate, the researchers tested turmeric extracts and lotions in vitro using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. They extracted turmeric by maceration with 70% ethanol to obtain a thick extract, then evaluated the physical characteristics of turmeric lotion preparations including organoleptics, spreadability, adhesion, pH, SPF values (using the Mansur method), and Erythema Transmission Percentage (%T) in vitro using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer with absorbance wavelengths of 290-320 nm. The results showed that F1 to F5 turmeric lotion preparations were semi-solid, brownish yellow, fragrant, with spreadability above 7 cm, adhesion less than 1 second, and pH below 8. The highest SPF value of turmeric extract was at a concentration of 500 mg with SPF 46, while the highest SPF of turmeric lotion was F5 with SPF 15. All turmeric extracts are categorized as sunblock, while F5 lotion is also sunblock and F1 to F4 lotions are fast-tanning. Although the SPF value decreases when turmeric extract is made into a lotion, it still has sunscreen potential.

Abstract. Skin diseases are conditions affecting the body's surface, often caused by microorganisms like Staphylococcus aureus. Cocoa beans (Theobroma cacao) contain secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins, which exhibit antibacterial properties. This study aimed to identify the phytochemical compounds in cocoa bean extract, develop a liquid soap formulation, assess its physical properties, and evaluate its antibacterial activity against S. aureus. The cocoa bean extract was obtained through the maceration method and underwent phytochemical screening. Four liquid soap formulations were created: F0 (0% extract), F1 (20% extract), F2 (40% extract), and F3 (60% extract). Antibacterial activity was tested using the well diffusion method by measuring the inhibition zone diameters of the formulations and the positive control (liquid Dettol soap). Phytochemical analysis confirmed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, and tannins. Organoleptic tests, including foam height and homogeneity, met the standards for all formulations, while viscosity standards were met only by F0 and F1. However, none of the formulations met pH standards. Antibacterial tests showed strong inhibition in all formulations: F0 (12.698 mm), F1 (13.251 mm), F2 (10.12 mm), and F3 (14.383 mm). The positive control showed medium inhibition (6.195 mm).
