Abstract

The research aims to know student’s mathematics critical thinking ability at the inquiry learning process of P flat side geometry of cube and cuboid class VIII B SMP Negeri 1 Sentolo. This kind of research is qualitative research. The research subject was six students of class VIII B SMP Negeri 1 Sentolo, that consist of two students of high class, two students of the middle class, and two students of low class. The collected data was in the form of written and oral. The written data was obtained from the test, and the oral data was obtained from the interview. Mathematic critical thinking ability was measured based on Ennis’ indicator. The research result showed that after student followed the learning process with guided inquiry learning method, high-class students can build the entire indicator of mathematic critical thinking ability correctly and completely, middle-class students can built the entire indicator of mathematic critical thinking ability correctly but there were little problems at the indicator 1, 2, 3 and 4, whereas low-class students can build the entire indicator of mathematic critical thinking ability correctly but there were little problems at the indicator 2 and 3. Besides, they less in indicator 1 and 4.

Abstract

Gamelan, a traditional Indonesian musical ensemble, presents an intriguing avenue for integrating mathematical concepts into elementary school curricula. This study employs an ethnomathematics approach to unveil the inherent mathematical principles embedded within Gamelan compositions, aligning them with elementary mathematical content. Through participant observation, interviews with practitioners, and document analysis, the research elucidates Gamelan's potential to facilitate learning across various mathematical domains. Findings indicate that Gamelan can effectively convey geometric concepts such as squares, rectangles, circles, spheres, trapezoids, cylinders, and cones, as well as principles of measurement utilizing standard units and numerical operations through tangible, experiential methods.

Abstract

The architecture of the Sultan's Palace in Yogyakarta offers a compelling opportunity to engage students in mathematics education while simultaneously contributing to preserving and promoting local cultural heritage from an early age. This research aims to explore the ethnomathematics embedded within the architectural design of Yogyakarta’s Sultan Palace to facilitate elementary school students' comprehension of mathematical concepts, particularly those related to numbers. Employing a qualitative approach, this study investigates the ethnomathematical dimensions of the Sultan's Palace architecture through comprehensive observation and analysis. The methodology involves examining the architectural features, identifying conceptual underpinnings, and establishing criteria to validate the traditional practices embodied in the palace's design. Based on these findings, new criteria for mathematics education are proposed. The research focuses on various elements of the Sultan’s Palace, including Kemandungan Lor/Plataran Keben, Bangsal Pancaniti, Regol Bangsal Pancaniti, Bangsal Sri Manganti, Penjagen Dragunder, Bangsal Manis, Bangsal Mandhasana, Ward Kotak, Gedhong Jene, Kasatriyan, Bangsal Kencana, and Danapratapa Gate. The results indicate that the architectural features of the Sultan’s Palace offer valuable insights into teaching mathematical concepts across several domains, such as numbers, algebra, measurement, geometry, data analysis, and probability. Specifically, the study aims to uncover geometric patterns, shapes, and principles integrated into the palace’s design. This research contributes to cultural preservation by documenting and analyzing the application of mathematics in the Sultan's Palace architecture—an aspect often neglected. Additionally, the findings hold significant implications for education by providing innovative teaching materials that intertwine cultural and mathematical elements, thereby enhancing students' understanding of mathematical concepts.

Abstract

The Javanese calendar is familiar to Javanese people. The calendar has a contextual side that has many opportunities to be used in learning mathematics. However, the utilization of the Javanese calendar has not been comprehensively explored. This research reveals the mathematical underpinnings of the Javanese calendar and how these can be leveraged to design effective educational strategies. The research method we used was qualitative, through a review of documents containing references to the Javanese calendar and school mathematics literature. The results showed that the Javanese calendar has mathematical value for learning mathematics regarding number recognition and addition, multiples of numbers, and Lowest Common Multiple (LCM). In addition, number sets, data presentation, relations, and functions. This research implies that the Javanese calendar can be used as a context for learning mathematics in schools.
