Abstract

AbstractSustainable tourism development plays a crucial role in biodiversity conservation areas that also function as tourist attractions, such as Komodo National Park. The use of these areas for tourism must continue to provide benefits to local communities while preserving ecological balance. However, increasing tourist numbers have begun to impact the ecosystem negatively. This study aims to examine tourism activities in Komodo National Park and assess how well sustainable tourism policies are implemented by stakeholders. It also offers recommendations for managing the park as both a conservation area and a sustainable tourism destination. Using an exploratory qualitative approach and the Miles and Huberman analysis technique, data were collected through interviews, field observations, and literature reviews. The study presents a development model for sustainable tourism in Komodo National Park, focusing on four key aspects of terrestrial ecosystem conservation: (1) protection of sensitive environments, (2) visitor management at natural sites, (3) interaction with wildlife, and (4) exploitation of species and animal welfare. The findings emphasize the need for integrated policy implementation and responsible tourism practices to maintain the park’s dual function as a conservation area and a source of local economic benefit.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aims to examine the extent to which Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water) is implemented in the marine tourism area of Komodo National Park (KNP), Labuan Bajo, Indonesia. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, using semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders, including the Komodo National Park Authority (BTNK), local communities, the West Manggarai Tourism Office, and phinisi tourism operators. The findings indicate that despite the existence of national policies derived from SDG 14 covering sensitive environmental protection, visitor management, wildlife interaction, and species protection, their implementation at the destination level remains limited. Environmental issues such as marine waste accumulation, anchor-related coral damage, and vessel-related pollution persist due to weak enforcement and fragmented stakeholder coordination. This study highlights a gap between policy frameworks and practical implementation, emphasizing the need for stronger governance integration and collaborative marine conservation in KNP.AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji sejauh mana Tujuan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan (Sustainable Development Goal/SDG) 14 (Life Below Water) diimplementasikan pada kawasan pariwisata bahari Taman Nasional Komodo (TNK), Labuan Bajo, Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the potential of gastronomic tourism in Gorontalo City, highlighting opportunities for its development as a key attraction. Employing a qualitative approach, data are presented in descriptive narratives and analyses. The study site, Gorontalo City, was selected due to its rich culinary and gastronomic heritage, which offers unique opportunities to attract visitors. Primary data were obtained through field observations, in-depth interviews with culinary and gastronomy experts, and focus group discussions (FGDs) to validate findings. Secondary data were derived from online documents, literature, and scientific journals. A purposive sampling method was applied to select culinary items based on historical and cultural significance, accessibility to food preparation processes, and popularity among local and visiting tourists. The collected data were analyzed through stages of data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing, supported by relevant theories and concepts. A SWOT analysis was conducted to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to gastronomic tourism in Gorontalo and a TOWS Matrix to generate strategies based on the findings from a SWOT analysis. Findings reveal that while Gorontalo offers strong symbolic culinary traditions and community-based tourism models, several barriers persist, including weak documentation, underdeveloped beverage traditions, limited digital promotion, and fragile MSME ecosystems, particularly for women-led enterprises. Nonetheless, emerging initiatives, such as food festivals, immersive homestays, and government-supported culinary hubs, indicate growing interest in gastronomic tourism. This paper recommends a multi-sectoral strategy that includes the development of a culinary heritage certification, innovation in traditional beverages, digital storytelling campaigns, and capacity-building for MSMEs. The integration of sustainability principles, through eco-friendly practices and community participation, is emphasized as a foundation for long-term success. Gorontalo’s culinary identity, if strategically developed and promoted, holds significant potential to become a catalyst for cultural preservation, inclusive economic growth, and regional tourism competitiveness.
