Abstract

This study analyzes the implementation of the thalabul 'ilmi hadith in shaping a literacy culture among students at STDI Imam Syafi’i Jember. This hadith emphasizes the obligation to seek knowledge as a means of attaining glory in this world and the hereafter. The aim of this study is to fill the research gap regarding the influence of thalabul 'ilmi values on literacy culture in Islamic higher education, an area that is still limited. The research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method, through interviews, observations, and document analysis. The results show that 80% of students actively participate in halaqah outside the classroom as one of the implementations of thalabul 'ilmi. Around 75% of students mention that their motivation to study comes from lecturers. The main supporting factors in building a literacy culture include the role of lecturers, campus facilities, and peer support. However, barriers found include technological distractions (with 60% of students affected by social media) and poor time management. The internalization of the thalabul 'ilmi hadith proves effective in strengthening the literacy culture, but challenges such as technological distractions and lack of active communication need to be addressed to strengthen its impact. ABSTRACT Penelitian ini menganalisis penerapan hadis thalabul 'ilmi dalam membentuk budaya literasi di kalangan mahasiswa Sekolah Tinggi Dirasat Islamiyah (STDI) Imam Syafi’i Jember. Hadis ini menegaskan kewajiban menuntut ilmu sebagai jalan untuk meraih kemuliaan di dunia dan akhirat. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengisi kekosongan riset terkait pengaruh nilai hadis thalabul 'ilmi terhadap budaya literasi di perguruan tinggi Islam yang masih terbatas. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus, melalui wawancara, observasi, dan analisis dokumen. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 80% mahasiswa aktif mengikuti halaqah di luar kelas sebagai implementasi nilai thalabul 'ilmi. Sekitar 75% mahasiswa menyatakan bahwa motivasi belajar mereka berasal dari dosen. Faktor pendukung utama dalam membangun budaya literasi adalah peran dosen, fasilitas kampus, dan dukungan teman sebaya. Namun, hambatan yang ditemukan adalah gangguan teknologi (60% mahasiswa terdistraksi oleh media sosial) dan manajemen waktu yang buruk. Internalisasi hadis thalabul 'ilmi terbukti efektif memperkuat budaya literasi, meskipun tantangan seperti gangguan teknologi dan kurangnya komunikasi aktif perlu diatasi untuk memperkuat dampaknya.

Abstract

Several Indonesian Islamic Higher Education Institutions (Perguruan Tinggi Keagamaan Islam/PTKIN) experienced a transformation from Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) to Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) in the early 2000s. This transformation not only involved an institutional change but also marked a significant epistemological shift from a single religious identity toward a multidisciplinary university model that integrates religious and general sciences. This study aims to analyse four models of knowledge integration developed at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, and UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. Employing a qualitative comparative approach based on a literature review, this study examines the philosophical foundations, epistemological orientations, and patterns of implementation of each model. The findings indicate that the four models emerged from a shared historical context, namely the transformation from IAIN to UIN, and are grounded in relatively similar philosophical foundations that position monotheism and revelation as central epistemic references. However, these foundations are articulated through different conceptual metaphors and epistemological emphases. The implementation of the models has been institutionalised through curricula, academic policies, and organisational culture. The implications of these models for the transformation of Islamic higher education in the digital and global era are complementary and mutually reinforcing. This study also identifies implementation challenges related to academic governance, curriculum synchronisation, and faculty capacity. Overall, the four models of knowledge integration enrich Islamic higher education by integrating spirituality, scientific rationality, and social responsibility, while highlighting the need to strengthen academic governance and sustainable professional development

Abstract

Differences in students’ levels of learning interest are often associated with their understanding of religious values, one of which is the understanding of hadiths concerning the virtues of knowledge. Hadiths emphasizing the virtues of knowledge are believed to stimulate interest in the learning process. This study aims to examine the influence of students’ understanding of hadiths on the virtues of knowledge on their learning interest at STDI Imam Syafi’i Jember. This research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. A total of 130 students were selected as respondents using simple random sampling. The research instruments were tested for validity and reliability, yielding Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.838 for the variable of understanding the hadiths on the virtues of knowledge and 0.884 for the learning interest variable. The normality test using Shapiro–Wilk produced a value of 0.097, indicating that the data were normally distributed, while the heteroscedasticity test showed a significance value of 0.968, confirming that the regression model was appropriate for use. The regression analysis revealed a significance value of p = 0.001 and a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.362. This indicates that understanding the hadiths on the virtues of knowledge has a positive influence of 36.2% on students’ learning interest, while the remaining 63.8% is influenced by other factors. These findings affirm that understanding the values contained in hadiths on the virtues of knowledge plays an important role in enhancing students’ learning interest.
