Abstract

The Gunung Geulis block, Cikepuh Wildlife Nature is one of the natural areas which is considered as the habitat for various wildlife. The area are currently degraded due to the fire. Reconstruction of the vegetation in Gunung Geulis block was conducted as an effort to understand the history of vegetation, so that in the future it can rehabilitate the burnt forest area through reforestation activities in accordance with the initial conditions of the habitat (before burning). This study used a transect method for soil sampling and acetolisys method to know the diversity of the sedimented sub-fossil pollen. Based on the results in the five sampling's points, the 90 types of both sub-fossil pollen and spores of plants (i.e., 34 types of sub-fossil pollens (arboreal pollen), 40 types of sub-fossil pollen (non-arboreal pollen), and 16 species of sub-fossil spores) were observed at five sampling points in Gunung Geulis block. This indicates that the annual fire intensity in the Gunung Geulis block were relatively high. Indeed, the correspoding block is undergoing a secondary succession. The vegetation changes that occur can be illustrated by the diversity of the observed sub-fossil pollen and spores in soil.Keyword : Pollen, Spores, Vegetation Reconstruction, Gunung Geulis, Cikepuh.

Abstract

Alternatives of vegetations to store carbon need to be encouraged considering that forests are threatened by widespread destructions. One such vegetation is grasslands which have the potential for carbon storage and to reduce CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. At present, many enterprises have designed grasslands for animal feed. Grassland at Little Farmers, Cisarua, West Bandung was established for many purposes, i.e. recreation, education, and animal feed. The purpose of this research was to study the potential of carbon stock in grassland vegetation at this location. Based on RaCSA method, the tree biomass was determined by nondestructive collection of density and basal area of trees, then calculated by an allometric equation. The ground cover biomass was determined by destructive collection of grass and roots. Total measured biomass was multiplied by 46% to obtain carbon storage. Based on the results, the potential of carbon stock in Little Farmers grassland is 6,506.23 kg/m2 with the potential for carbon storage below the ground (0.129 kg / m2) was slightly higher than the carbon stored above the ground  (0.101 kg / m2). Carbon stored in ground cover had been proven to be lower than woody plants (6,506 kg / m2). This study has pioneered in finding the carbon stocks potential of a man-made grassland, so it provides basis of an alternative land use that can be encouraged for carbon sequestration. For many enterprises, this study will aid in the conduct and management planning of grasslands with regards to ecosystem services preservation, such as carbon sequestration.

Abstract

Abstract

The method used is survey method. The data was collected teknic square plots placed along the transect. The research found as many as 43 in the plant species, which are divided into categories of tree, poles, saplings and seedlings. Kurai (Trema orientalis) is dominant species into tree categories, Paku bagedor (Cyathea contaminans) into poles, Kiseureuh (Piper aduncum) into saplings, and Nangsi (Villebrunea rubescens) into seedlings.  The composition of vegetation types found in two different zones indicates a difference, but it can be said that the plant species are dominant in the two zones are almost the same. Galunggung forests are still in a state that has not climax, and the population structure is still in development (secondary stage). Marked with the current level of diversity and the discovery of Huru (Litsea sp.), Puspa (Schima walichii), Hamerang (Vernonia arborea), and Nangsi (Villebrunea rubescens), as well as other types that are characteristic of rain forest at mountian seral successional stage. Keywords: Vegetation, Rain Forest at Mountain, Seral Successional StageSitasi: Suryana, Iskandar, J., Parikesit, Partasasmita, R. dan Irawan, B.
