Abstract

This study aims to discuss social values of political-economic activities in the community that lives in a village located on the state border and to study the narration of the community toward the existence of the state. This research uses a qualitative method, and the data is collected through observation and interview. The research location is in Sungai Limau Village, Sebatik Tengah District, Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan Province. This paper shows that in Sebatik Island, especially in Sungai Limau Village, there is a change in the environment . There are many banana trees in that village. In the beginning, bananas are considered to have low economic value. But then, there is a creative idea from one of the local people, which is initiating a processed banana. After being processed, bananas turn out to have higher economic value. They see a marketing opportunity in Tawau City, Sabah, Malaysia, across the state border, and it is hard for them to go through the border. For the local people, the state border is no longer considered a ‘sacred area’ and forbidden to enter. Based on the research, it can be concluded that the environment may seem to have limitations in fulfilling people's needs, but then, there is actually hidden potential of natural resources that can be processed to meet their needs.

Abstract

Somah orientation within family institutions shows that a father serves as the head of a family and a main worker of the family living together with his nuclear family has changed. The changes are not only in economic-social aspects, but also cultural aspects. The change occurs as a consequence of Long Distance Marriage (LDM) carried out by farmer families to meet their life needs. The study focused on the relationship model between husbands and wives in the farmer families whose husbands work in the city temporarily. The study shows that keeping husbands out of the village does not change much of the construction of patriarchal culture and the ideology of familialism in Tanggulangin community. The construction of the role of men and women in the LDM farmer families still exhibits the strong influence of patriarchal culture and familialism ideology that distinguishes the roles of men and women in the dichotomy of public and domestic roles as well as the patterns of senior-junior partner relations both at the theoretical and practical levels. Meanwhile, in the aspect of income earning and decision making, the relational model that is built in LDM farmer families LDM also depicts strong influence of patriarchy and ideologies familialism.

Abstract

Liminal identity is a problem faced by adolescence. Liminal events occur due to the reluctance of parents to share adolescent experiences with teenagers in the family. In addition to the transition period, the most noticeable development in adolescence is its physical growth. Physical growth is accompanied by an active hormone that influences the curiosity of adolescents about physical changes, psychological, and biological desires. This study aims to understand the construction of identity and sexual expression of adolescents in Semarang. This research employed descriptive qualitative research. The results of the study indicate that an inappropriate distribution of adolescents’ curiosity brings great consequences during adolescence period. Many adolescents express themselves by having sex outside of marriage and other sexual behaviors. This occurs as a result of wrong association and inaccurate distribution of curiosity. Misconceptions of adolescent behavior also happen due to misconceptions and miss-adaptation of the environment. The behavior is heavily influenced by their environment where they grow and develop, especially in the urban environments which are very complex due to global dynamics.

Abstract

Research on interfaith families has largely emphasized legal frameworks and institutional constraints, often portraying them as fragile or conflict-ridden. Less attention has been given to how interfaith households negotiate power and intimacy in daily life, particularly within rural settings where pluralism has long been practiced. This article examines power relations between husbands and wives in interfaith families in Kapencar Village, Wonosobo, Indonesia. The study argues that power in such households is not simply hierarchical but negotiated through everyday practices that generate resilience and cohesion. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews and participant observation with twelve interfaith families representing Muslim, Christian, Catholic, and Hindu backgrounds. The analysis highlights negotiations across religious transmission, economic collaboration, reproductive decision-making, parenting, and cultural rituals. Findings show that while relations appear egalitarian on the surface, deeper structures reveal ongoing contestation and adaptation that transform potential conflict into stability. This study contributes to family and interfaith scholarship by demonstrating that negotiation is not a deficit but a productive practice sustaining plural households. It redefines interfaith families as microcosms of pluralism and resilience, offering a lens to rethink family studies beyond legal and doctrinal concerns and toward the politics of everyday life.

Abstract

The phenomenon of interfaith marriage tends to raise problems regarding how parents provide parenting patterns to their children. These issues include how parents will raise their children to instill religious and social values while adapting to environmental conditions. This article aims to determine the reproduction of interfaith family culture in instilling religious and social values in children. The study used a qualitative method in the form of a case study of interfaith families, with field research in Kapencar Village, Semarang City, and Bekasi City. This study focused on 12 informants from three families of different religions. Data has been collected through interviews and field observations on May 21, 2024, and August 1, 2024. The study was analyzed using Pierre Bourdieu's theory of cultural reproduction which cannot be separated from the concept of social practice. This theory is used to examine the cultural reproduction produced by families of different religions by considering the aspects of capital, habitus, and arena within the family. The results of the study show that interfaith families produce complex values by instilling them in children. In instilling religious and social values in interfaith families, it is possible to reproduce symbolic dominance and innovative cultural reproduction. The reproduction of symbolic dominance includes aspects of giving values that tend to be dominated by one of the parents' religions and the reproduction of innovative culture includes aspects of giving mutually balanced values. There are value instillation strategies found in interfaith families, namely a universal value-based model and a model of dividing the role of parents in instilling religious and social values. This research serves as a reference for understanding and developing parenting patterns in families of various religious backgrounds.
