Abstract

The aim of this present study is to reveal the technique and ideology of vocatives and proper names in The Hobbit. To be more precise, this study also examine translation quality of vocatives and proper names by assessing its accuracy, readability and acceptability. This study applied descriptive qualitative research. Aside from getting data from The Hobbit, the data are gotten from target readers’ and expert raters’ questionnaire. Based on the analysis, the translator applied 9 techniques in translating 75 vocatives. In dealing with proper names, the translator used 7 translation techniques. This study reveals that the translator adopted more foreignization ideology in rendering vocatives and proper names into Indonesian. It can be concluded that the translator intend to keep the originality of this novel, since he mostly copied the name of characters and georagphical name that appeared in this novel. Dealing with the quality of translation, it is proved that there are various translation quality of vocatives and proper names found in The Hobbit. It covers accurate, less accurate, inaccurate, acceptable, less acceptable, inacceptable, high readability, sufficient readability and low readability translation.

Abstract

National exam is one of big issues in IndonesianEducational system. Major controversies occur inimplementing the national examination. As a statemandatory exam that every student has to participate, itdetermines whether a student deserves to graduate or muststay. The policy makers believe if such condition isapplied, teachers will be pushed to teach better andstudents will be motivated to learn more. However, someresearch revealed negative impacts along the release ofsuch policy. It sparks negative impacts that policy makersshould be aware. This article discusses students?perspective regarding the benefits and drawbacks ofNational exam, and solution for better implementation ofNational Examination in Indonesia. Abstract

English proficiency has become an essential skill that significantly influences academic achievement, professional opportunities, and cross-cultural communication. This study investigates the implementation of the English Curriculum at the State Islamic College of Mandailing Natal, focusing on the challenges and opportunities inherent in the current pedagogical framework. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations, involving two lecturers, and thirty students. The analysis revealed that traditional, lecture-based teaching methods, resource limitations of material, and fragmented curriculum delivery pose significant challenges to effective language instruction. Conversely, the study identified promising opportunities, such as the integration of interactive teaching strategies, enhanced use of digital tools, and ongoing professional development for educators, which could bridge the gap between theoretical content and practical application. The findings suggest that targeted curriculum reforms are essential to create a more engaging and effective learning environment, ultimately enhancing students’ English language proficiency and preparing them for academic and professional success.
