Abstract

Today the dental porcelain is used as one option for the manufacture of dental restorations with the development of esthetic dentistry. Beside the advantages there are also disadvantages of porcelain is its britlle so easily fracture. Factors such as impact, fatigue, occlusal pressure, and the mismatch between the physical properties of metals can lead to fracture of porcelain. Fractures often occur in the maxilla (75%) and especially on the labial surface (60%). Porcelain fracture in the anterior region will interfere with the appearance of the patient. Replacement of defective restorations are not necessarily the most practical solution because it takes a long time and cost.One alternative way to handle that is to repair in the mouth. Intraoral repair to do is to use a composite resin and an assortment of treatments on porcelain and metal surfaces such as coarsening with diamond drills, sandblasting and acid hidrofluoride applications.Next,applied primer and the selected composite materials which can be universal composites. Fracture of the porcelain restoration porcelain crowns can be repaired in the mouth in a simple manner. Repair materials are used together with direct composite materials differ only in the etching material.

Abstract

Introduction: Zirconia (ZrO2) is a metal-free substance that rapidly improving as dental materials that has a good properties which are high biocompatibility, esthetics, and strength. Addition of a stabilizer like CaO will increase the mechanical properties of zirconia due to the transformation toughening. Methods: The Calcia Partially Stabilized Zirconia (Ca-PSZ) nanoparticles can be synthesized by using sol gel technique. This method makes easier to control the purity, homogeneity and physical characteristics at low temperature. This method consists of two stages, hydrolysis and condensation. The precursor were used  Zirconium Chloride (ZrCl4) with 0,1 M concentration and Calcia as stabilizer with 7% concentration. The addition of Calcia will help the tetragonal crystals forming at low temperature. Calcination temperature was used 900o C. To prevent conglomeration or agglomeration, dispersants are needed. One of the dispersants available is chitosan. Results: X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis identifies that there are tetragonal and monoclinic phase with a percentage of 85% and 15% perspectively for sample without using chitosan and 100% tetragonal for sample that using chitosan. Analysis of Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) results that particles with chitosan are more homogenous and dispersed with smaller size produced compared to particles without chitosan. Conclusion: From the results of the analysis, Ca-PSZ with sol-gel technique can produce nanoparticle and addition of  chitosan  can dispersed nanoparticles that could be used as material restoration and rehabilitation component  in dentistry.

Abstract

Introduction: Varnish is one of the dental materials that can be used to protect the pulp. Raw materials for making varnish were easy to be obtained using simple technique and composition. Self-processed varnish which has 40 gr of copal, 50 ml of 95% alcohol and 10 ml of chloroform was produced. When applied, varnish formed a thin film layer which tend to porous. The purpose of this study was to analyze the comparison between porosity which formed in film layer of self-processed and  factory varnish. Method: This study was true experimental with  12 third upper molars that had been cut horizontally as specimens and were divided into 2 groups as treated and control groups. First group had 1, 2, 3 and 4 times application of processed varnish as treated sample and second group samples were applied with factory varnish as control sample. Porosity was tested using SEM then its percentage was calculated by comparing the  porosity and the tooth area. The data was then tested  with t- independent test. Result: The result showed that self-processed varnish obtained larger percentage of porosity. Started at the third application time, both processed and factory varnish showed no porosity. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study was that there is difference between  porosity which formed in film layer of self-processed and  factory varnish.

Abstract

Introduction: Porcelain must have sufficient flexural strength to withstand mastication forces. The flexural strength of porcelain can be influenced by the maturity level of porcelain related to the temperature and sintering time. The purpose of this study was to compare the flexural strength of Indonesian natural sand self-synthesised porcelain with different sintering temperatures. Methods: Self-synthesised porcelain powder, with the composition of 65% Pangaribuan felspar, 25% Belitung silica, 5% Sukabumi kaolin, and 5% potassium salt, were condensed into 10 samples with the size of 7cm x 2cm x 0.4cm. A total of 5 samples were each burned at the temperature of 1150°C and 1200°C. Flexural strength test was performed using the Universal Testing Machine (Netzsch™) with the lowest load of 7.5 kg, and the data obtained was calculated using the bending strength formula. Result: The average flexural strength of self-synthesised porcelain at the sintering temperature of 1150°C was 26.678 MPa, while at the temperature of 1200°C was 39.038 MPa. Conclusion: This study concluded that Indonesian natural sand self-synthesised porcelain had a lower flexural strength at the sintering temperature of 1150°C than at the temperature of 1200°C.Keywords: Flexural strength, self-synthesised porcelain, sintering temperature.

Abstract

Introduction: This experiment was conducted experimentally to synthesize Calcia Partially Stabilized Zirconia (Ca-PSZ) by sol-gel method using eggshell membrane template as a composite filler. The eggshell membrane was used to produce a mesh shaped structure, which hopefully can improve the mechanical properties of the composite. Method: Ca-PSZ filler was synthesized from ZrOCl2 precursor and Ca(NO3)2 stabilizer with a 24 hours immersion time. Ca-PSZ of synthesis then mixed with the resin matrix to test its composite hardness. Result: The EDS characterization results suggested that the sample contained elements of zirconia, calcium, and oxygen. Whereas, the XRD characterization identified that crystal structures that formed in the sample were nano scale tetragonal. Characterization of SEM showed Ca-PSZ with mesh structured. The average composite hardness value was 15.79 VHN. Conclusion: The composites with Ca-PSZ-synthesized filler could be prepared and its hardness value was higher than the composite with Ca-PSZ filler in spherical particles, but the hardness was still below the composite on the market.

Abstract

Introduction: Dental alginate impression material is the most common material used in dentistry. However, dental alginate waste (DAW) is one of the causes of the increasing number of dentistry and medicinal wastes. This research was aimed to discover the effect of dental alginate impression waste as additional fertiliser on the plant yields by determining the weight of cauliflower crop, and towards the quality of soil by determining the soil pH (Ultisol® Jatinangor). Methods: The experiment was using a randomised block design with 4 treatments and 7 times replications. The treatment consisted of A0 (0% DAW as control), A1 (0.01% DAW), A2 (0.1% DAW), and A3 (1% DAW). Results: The weight of cauliflower after addition of DAW in group A0 was 72.78; A1 was 139.82); A2 was 130.69; and A3 was 60.72). While the pH soil in group A0 was 5.92; A1 was 6.07; A2 was 6.02; and A3 was 6.26. The treatment in the A1 and A2 groups were found as the significant doses that able to increase the cauliflower weight for consecutively 1.92 times and 1.80 times compared to the control group, while on the soil quality improvement (soil pH), the addition of DAW was not significantly affected. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the addition of dental alginate waste at the dose of 0.01% and 0.1% increased the weight of cauliflower, but has no significant effect on the soil quality.

Abstract

Introduction: Several factor limits of services of dental composite have triggered further improvement. ZrO2-Al2O3-SiO2 system as filler of dental composite had been developed with sol-gel technique. Ultrasonic homogeniser were reported to change the particle size ditribution or shape. Unifom size and distribution of particle is believed to help define the behavior of hardness properties. Methods: The study was an laboratory experimental design. Filler ZrO2-Al2O3-SiO2 system were developed via sol-gel methods. Post calcination process, filler were immerse in ethanol and applied with ultrasonic homogeniser, with various amplitude i.e 50 rpm, 60 rpm and 80 rpm then named sample A, B, and C. XRD, SEM anda PSA were used to characterize of filler system. Subsequent filler were used to fabricate dental composite then evaluate the hardness value using micro-hardness tester. One–way ANOVA was used to analysis the statistical result of hardness value. Results: XRD pattern of three sample were similar in which tetragonal zirconia was prominent (57-61 %) followed by monoclinic zirconia (24-25%) and amorphous (15-17 %). While, SEM and PSA characterization showed amplitude 50 rpm (sample A) produce more uniform size and well-distributed particle filler than the others. In contrary, sample B and C showed higher peak in PSA results. It means there was dominating of filler with particular size.  However, the hardness value did not show significant differences between those filler (p>0,05). Conclusion: Dental composite that contain of different uniformity and distribution of filler ZrO2-Al2O3-SiO2 system has no significantly differences of hardness value.

Abstract

Introduction: Dimensional stability of alginate impression is important to obtain an accurate cast. This study was to find the linear dimensional changes of the cast made from delayed pour high stability alginate impression after 5 days. Methods: This experimental laboratory study used 20 samples, divided into 4 groups. First and third group were the generated cast produced by immediately pour into high stability and conventional alginate impressions. Second and fourth group were the generated cast produced by delayed pour into high stability and conventional alginate impression for 5 days in storage with 100% humidity. Dimensional changes were measured on the upper part of the cast from buccal-lingual and mesial-distal direction beside measuring on the outer distance between the upper cast used Mitutoyo digital caliper scaled 0.01 mm. The data were analyzed using ANOVA (α = 0.05).Results: Mesial-distal (a) diameter average of group I, II, IV were respectively 8.410 mm, 8.520 mm, and 8.620 mm, compared with III as control was 8.420 mm. Meanwhile, diameter averages of mesial-distal (b) were 8.314 mm, 8.416 mm, 8.513 mm, and 8.315 mm. The averages of distance between each teeth (c) were 13.312 mm, 13.240 mm 13.191 mm, and 13.316 mm. The diameter averages of buccal-lingual (d) were 8.411 mm, 8.530 mm, 8.608 mm and 8.410 mm. The diameter averages of buccal-lingual (e) were 8.350 mm, 8.441 mm, 8.524 mm, and 8.340 mm. ANOVA test of the results of distance measurements between teeth (c) produces a calculated F value of 147.850, higher than the F table value (3.239). There were significant diferencess dimensional changes on gypsum cast made from high stability alginate impression and then poured after 5 days. Conclusion: There were diferencess linier dimensional changes on gypsum cast made from high stability alginate impression and then poured after 5 days.

Abstract

Introduction: Varnish fluoride has the ability to prevent enamel demineralization. De-waxed shellac that mostly used for fruits coating, now is applied as varnish fluoride materials. This de-waxed shellac is quite potential since the product can be found from Indonesian sources. The research aims to describe the toxicity effect of varnish fluoride made of de-waxed shellac by measuring the viability of the fibroblast cells. Methods: The research method that was used in this study is in vitro experimental method, which using the tooth that had been smeared with varnish fluoride contacted with fibroblast cells REF (Rat Embryonic Fibroblast) for 4, 8, and 24 hours. The toxicity effect of varnish fluoride was then measured by cell viability. Results The results show that the average cells viability on 4 hours contacted tooth was 88%, while average cells viability on 8 hours contacted tooth was 74%, and lastly the average cells viability on 24 hours contacted tooth was 63%. Conclusion: The conclusion of this preliminary study on cells viability based on toxicity effect of varnish fluoride made from Indonesian de-waxed shellac are different based on contacted time.Keywords: Cell viability, toxicity effect, varnish fluoride, Indonesian de-waxed shellac

Abstract

The acrylic artificial teeth are still among the most frequently used artificial teeth. Some commercial brands marketed in Bandung claim that their products have met the existing standards. However, those brands do not give any mechanical property data, including data on hardness. The ADA specification standard no. 15 requires a hardness of minimum 15.00 KHN for acrylic artificial teeth. The aim of this study is to find out which acrylic artificial teeth actually have a standardized hardness value. The study is an analytical descriptive study, which is performed on 5 brands of acrylic artificial teeth marketed in Bandung. From each brand, 4 teeth were sampled and receive 10 indentation spots on the upper and lower surfaces. It is concluded that the five acrylic artificial teeth brands have met the ADA specification standard no. 15 and there are differences in hardness values among the five brands.
