Abstract

Mangroves are a type of tree whose habitat is in areas influenced by sea tides. This research aims to determine the percentage of mangrove plant life and habitat characteristics at the planting location in Pasar Rawa Village in the 2018, 2019, and 2020 planting years. The research location is in the forest area of Pasar Rawa Village, which is administratively located in Gebang District, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra Province. The time of the research was carried out from March to June 2021. The success of planting R. apiculata mangrove species in each planting year is above 80%. Based on the measurement results at the three planting locations, the average thickness of the mud was above 40 cm. This indicates the planting location is suitable for vegetation growth. Salinity, acidity, and dissolved oxygen in all study locations are also suitable for mangrove growth. This study concludes that the survival percentage of mangrove planting in Pasar Swamp Village at three years of planting is above 80% and has suitable habitat characteristics for mangrove growth. The success of planting mangroves is inseparable from the role of the community, which maintains and carries out the planting and the types suitable for planting in that location. Suggestions for this research are that it is necessary to thin the location of the 2020 planting year because the distance is too tight and add even more specific environmental factors, such as substrate and nutrients, for even better results.

Abstract

Mangrove ecotourism is largely unknown to the general public due to limited development and insufficient assessment of its suitability, especially in North Sumatra. Spatial analysis in determining the suitability of coastal areas is rarely conducted. This spatial analysis uses Geographic Information System (GIS) applications in determining the management model for mangrove forest areas. The purpose of this study is to determine how to manage and develop mangrove ecotourism through spatial analysis based on ecotourism-related parameters. This study was conducted from September to December 2025. The research methodology included an analysis of the suitability matrix of mangrove forests for ecotourism, a SWOT analysis to identify the strengths, weaknesses, and challenges in the suitability of land for ecotourism, and remote sensing analysis using ArcGIS 10.8 with Band 8 and Band 4 for NDVI. The results obtained were an Ecotourism Suitability Index value of 71.05%, which is classified as conditionally suitable, a SWOT analysis in the form of ecotourism development for promotion through social media and support for accessibility and ecotourism infrastructure, and remote sensing analysis with an average NDVI value of 0.36, which is classified as high density. The conclusion of this study is that the mangrove forest at Serambi Deli Beach is suitable for ecotourism development, but several conditions must be improved, including mangrove species diversity, mangrove density, and infrastructure to support ecotourism activities.

Abstract

The mangrove forest in Nelayan Seberang Medan Belawan Village is fully utilized by the community. Currently, the condition of the mangrove forest has been damaged due to excessive encroachment and conversion into fish ponds, which has destroyed the mangrove ecosystem. The objective of this community service activity is to restore the mangrove ecosystem by replanting mangrove species in the mangrove ecosystem, as well as to raise awareness among the Seberang Fishing Village community about the importance of mangrove forests in providing ecological, economic, and social benefits to coastal communities. The methods used in this activity included community participation in restoring the mangrove ecosystem, caring for the mangrove forest ecosystem by conducting continuous monitoring to reduce damage to the mangrove forest, and planting Rhizophora apiculata as a fast-growing species to accelerate the restoration of the mangrove ecosystem. The results of this activity were the restoration of the mangrove ecosystem by planting 500 seedlings in locations that had been cleared due to logging. community participation in planting as a form of preserving the mangrove forest ecosystem for the ecological and economic interests of coastal communities. The community is also expected to maintain the mangrove species that have been planted at these locations and replace dead mangrove species with new seedlings. The conclusion of this activity is that mangrove forest planting aims to improve the condition of mangrove forests in Nelayan Seberang Village that have been damaged and to raise awareness among the community to protect the environment by planting trees, thereby reducing the percentage of erosion and disasters that can damage the Nelayan Seberang Village area.

Abstract

Traditional knowledge preservation is a fundamental component of sustainable development, contributing to biodiversity conservation, community health resilience, and the safeguarding of cultural heritage. North Sumatra Province, Indonesia, with its rich ethnic and cultural diversity, represents an important setting for ethnobotanical research. This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge among the younger generation regarding the use of medicinal plants in traditional medicine, cultural practices, and traditional ceremonies. A quantitative descriptive survey was conducted involving 61 respondents, predominantly university students. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed descriptively through frequency and percentage distributions. Most respondents were female (68.85%), aged 17–20 years (63.93%), and belonged to the Toba Batak ethnic group (45.90%). The findings revealed that 41% of respondents had a moderate level of ethnobotanical knowledge, indicating that while most participants possessed basic knowledge of medicinal plants, only 10% were familiar with more than 15 medicinal plant species. Overall, the younger generation demonstrated a moderate level of knowledge; however, the limited recognition of medicinal plant diversity and the low understanding of their cultural and symbolic functions suggest a gradual erosion of traditional ethnobotanical knowledge. These findings provide baseline information for developing educational and cultural preservation programs aimed at strengthening ethnobotanical knowledge among younger generations and supporting the conservation of Indonesia's traditional biocultural heritage.

Abstract

Land cover changes due to anthropogenic activities are one of the main threats to the sustainability of the Sumatran Elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) habitat. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the physiological conditions of Sumatran Elephants and land cover changes in the North Sumatra Holiday Resort Nature Tourism Park (Indonesian term: Taman Wisata Alam/TWA). The study was conducted on three individual elephants, namely Nurhalimah, Sudarwanto, and Merry. The physiological data observed included age, body temperature, body condition, appetite, fecal condition, rest duration, and stress levels. Land cover data were obtained through the interpretation of satellite imagery and secondary data from the area. Data analysis was carried out using multiple linear regression, beginning with classical assumption tests and hypothesis tests. The results of the study indicate that during the period 1990–2024, there was a very significant change in land cover, where secondary dryland forests were almost entirely converted into plantations, settlements, and other non-forest lands. The results of the F test indicate that all physiological variables simultaneously had a significant effect on land cover changes (p<0.05). The Adjusted R Square value of 0.652 indicates that the observed physiological variables can explain 65.2% of the variation in land cover change. Partially, only stress levels significantly influence land cover change with a significance value of 0.003 and a beta coefficient of 1.120. These results indicate that stress levels are the most sensitive physiological indicator in responding to habitat changes. Therefore, conservation efforts for Sumatran Elephants at the TWA Holiday Resort need to be directed at habitat restoration and reducing anthropogenic pressures to maintain the welfare and sustainability of the elephant population in the area.
