Abstract

Abstract

Begonia × erythrophylla Herincq is an ornamental plant with potential as a source of secondary metabolites; however, information on the standardization of its non-polar extract remains limited. This study aimed to establish the quality profile of the n-hexane extract of Begonia × erythrophylla Herincq  leaves based on specific and non-specific parameters and phytochemical screening. An experimental study was conducted using successive maceration of 317 g of powdered leaves. The extract was evaluated for yield, organoleptic properties, water- and ethanol-soluble extractive values, loss on drying, specific gravity, ash values, and secondary metabolite groups. Extraction produced 37.0 g of extract with a yield of 11.67%. The extract was thick, dark green, homogeneous, and had a characteristic odor. Phytochemical screening indicated the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, polyphenols, steroids, and monoterpenoids/sesquiterpenoids, whereas quinones and saponins were not detected. The water- and ethanol-soluble extractive values were 0.1137 ± 0.0401% and 0.2119 ± 0.0095%, respectively. Loss on drying was 0.0106 ± 0.0017%, specific gravity was 0.8802 ± 0.0029 g/mL, total ash was 0.5543 ± 0.0434%, water-soluble ash was 0.4859 ± 0.0405%, and acid-insoluble ash was 0.4845 ± 0.0229%. Overall, the ethanol-soluble extractive value, loss on drying, specific gravity, and ash parameters were relatively consistent, whereas the water-soluble extractive value showed considerable variation. These findings provide a preliminary standardization profile for the n-hexane extract of Begonia × erythrophylla Herincq leaves. However, the water-soluble extractive value and relationships among ash parameters require verification before being established as quality specifications for herbal raw materials.
