Abstract

ntroduction The National Household Health Survey showed that the incidence of upper respiratory tract infection (URI) in Indonesia was high. The objectives of the study were to investigate the clinical manifestations of URI, its bacterial spectrum and sensitivity. MethodsA cross sectional study was carried out involving one hundred children with symptoms of URI i.e. fever, cough and or runny nose. The data of demography, physical sign, hematology, bacterial spectrum and sensitivity were collected. ResultsThe prevalence of URI was higher in male, younger age, smoker family, low educated, low income family, and polluted environment. The manifestations of URI were rhinopharyngitis (52%), pharyngitis (18%), rhinitis (12%), tonsilopharyngitis (10%), and tonsillitis (8%). The isolated bacteria were S. aureus, S. b hemolyticus, K. pneumoniae, C. diphtheriae, S. albus and S. anhemolyticus. S. aureus was higher in male than in female (p<0.01), while S. aureus, S. â hemolyticus, and C. bacterium diphtheriae were higher in preschool age children (p<0.01), and K. pneumoniae were higher in infants (p<0.01). S. aureus, and S. â hemolyticus were higher in children with under-nutrition, while in normal nutrition were of K. pneumonia and C diphtheriae (p<0.01). Most bacteria were intermediate and resistant to fourteen tested antibiotics.ConclusionThe manifestations of URI were rhinopharyngitis (52%), pharyngitis (18%), rhinitis (12%), tonsilopharyngitis (10%), and tonsillitis (8%), each of which could be associated with the complication and accompanying disease. The pathogenic bacterial spectrum of the throat consisted of S. aureus, S. â hemolyticus, K. pneumonia, and C. diphtheriae.

Abstract

Community service activities were carried out in the form of confirming stunting in infants under two years old and health screening for weight faltering infants under two years old in Kelurahan Jati Pulo to improve the health and nutritional status of children in one of the work areas of the West Jakarta Health sub-department. The location for the activity was chosen because the sub-district is one of the sub-districts with the most stunting findings and was located close to the Trisakti University. The stunting screening for children under five in the work area of the primary health care follows the National Guidelines for Health Services for stunting in primary healthcare facilities. Still, apart from anthropometric examinations, the diagnosis of stunting was made based on anamnesis, physical examination and supporting examinations carried out by a pediatrician. The purpose of this service activity was to confirm stunting in under-fives and prevent stunting by screening children's weight-faltering health to optimize the nutritional status and health of toddlers so that parents can provide good and proper care for the process of growth and development of children to prevent health and nutrition problems in toddlers. The benefit of this activity was that parents, especially mothers of toddlers, know their children's nutritional status and the importance of the First 1000 Days of Life to prevent nutritional problems in toddlers and improve children's health and nutritional status.

Abstract

Thalassemia is one of the most common genetics disease in Indonesian children because Indonesia is located along the “Thalassemia Belt’. The disease usually occur in the early age, this condition reports many nutritional deficiencies in thalassemia patients. If not treated properly this condition may lead to growth and development impairments. Many parents and patients still not understand about what nutrition should be consumed. Although many of the parents and patients already understand about what nutrition should be consumed but they have not consumed it daily for some reasons. The seminar about the nutrition for thalassemia patients topic is seldom to be held. This is one of the reason why the knowledge about the appropriate nutrition for the patients is still not well understood. For that reason a discussion about appropriate nutrition for the thalassemia patients with thalassemia community , parents and thalassemia patients aimed to exposed them about the knowledge of which nutrition should be given, can be given or not to be given to thalassemia’s patients. In the end of the discussions we hope that the thalassemia’s family and patients can arrange the appropriate diet menu therefore the patients can get the appropriate diet daily. When the patients can get appropriate diet menu everyday we hope that their growth and development, health status and life quality will be well maintained. The knowledge about the appropriate diet of the thalassemia’s patients is very important. With the appropriate nutrition the thalassemia patient’s growth and development and quality of life can be well maintained.
