Abstract

The problem of this research is the low ability of students to comprehend English vocabulary, which was identified through observation and interviews with the English subject teacher at the school. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is an effect of using flashcard media on vocabulary comprehension in the second-grade English class. This research uses an experimental method with a pre-experimental design. The study was conducted at SD Negeri 10 Sitiung during the second semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. The sample consisted of 17 students. The results of the independent sample t-test showed a significance of (0.000 < 0.005). It can be concluded that the use of flashcards has an effect on English vocabulary comprehension. Based on the pretest and posttest results, the use of flashcard media had a positive impact on vocabulary comprehension. Flashcards can be used by educators as one of the supporting media in the teaching and learning process and can increase student enthusiasm in participating in lessons.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the fact that many second-grade elementary school students are still unable to read. The researcher’s effort to address this issue was to develop a learning medium in the form of word cards, aimed at increasing students’ interest in reading, particularly in the Indonesian language subject, on the topic of types of occupations, using attractive images. This study employs a research and development (R&D) methodology. The development model used is the Four-D (4D) model, which includes: Define, Design, Development, and Dissemination. In the Define stage, needs analysis, material analysis, learner characteristics analysis, and curriculum analysis were conducted. In the Design stage, instructional module and word card media designs were developed. In the Development stage, validation tests, practicality tests, and effectiveness tests were carried out. In the Dissemination stage, the developed Indonesian language word card media was distributed, limited to SDN 07 Koto Baru. The research and development process resulted in a word card learning medium for second-grade students at SDN 07 Koto Baru. The media was validated by three validators, and the average validation score of the word card media reached 89%, categorized as very valid. In terms of practicality, responses from teachers and students showed an average score of 93.82%, categorized as very practical. The effectiveness test, conducted with 21 students who used the developed word card media during learning, showed an average score of 77.99%, indicating the media is effective. It can thus be concluded that the word card media is engaging, suitable for use in the learning process, and has potential for further development.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the internal and external factors causing the low speaking ability of tenth-grade students at SMAN 5 Sumatera Barat, whores scores fell below the Minimum Mastery Criterion (KKM) of 75. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design to investigate the phenomenon deeply. Data were collected through non-participant classroom observations, open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with one English teacher and three selected students. The data were analyzed using Braun & Clarke’s thematic analysis framework systematically. The findings identified 36 conceptual codes revealing that students face linguistic deficits, namely limited vocabulary and pronunciation difficulties, which trigger psychological distress including high speaking anxiety, low self-confidence and low learning motivation. Meanwhile, the external factors showed that these individual barriers are worsened by monotonous teaching strategies, an unsupportive classroom environment dominated by a toxic roasting culture among peers, limited practice opportunities, intrusive teacher feedback and inadequate learning facilities. In conclusion, the complex interaction between these linguistic-affective barriers and a restrictive classroom ecosystem forces students to execute defensive behaviors, such as speaking in whispers, reverting to local dialects or resorting to absolute silence, which ultimately paralyzes their English communicative competence.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh belum optimalnya pemanfaatan bahan ajar digital dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di sekolah dasar, sehingga proses pembelajaran masih didominasi penggunaan LKPD cetak yang kurang interaktif. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan Elektronik Lembar Kerja Peserta Didik (E-LKPD) berbantu Book Creator yang valid, praktis, dan efektif pada mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris kelas V SD Negeri 05 Sitiung. Penelitian menggunakan metode Research and Development (R&D) dengan model pengembangan 4D yang meliputi tahap Define, Design, Development, dan Disseminate. Subjek penelitian terdiri atas validator ahli, guru kelas V, dan peserta didik kelas V. Instrumen penelitian meliputi lembar validasi, angket praktikalitas, dan tes hasil belajar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa E-LKPD yang dikembangkan memperoleh kategori sangat valid, dengan persentase validitas pada aspek kegrafikan sebesar 92%, materi 88,33%, bahasa 85,71%, soal 96%, dan modul ajar 100%. Hasil uji praktikalitas memperoleh rata-rata sebesar 95,5% dengan kategori sangat praktis, sedangkan hasil uji efektivitas menunjukkan tingkat ketuntasan belajar peserta didik sebesar 91,6% dengan kategori sangat efektif. Hasil penyebaran secara terbatas juga menunjukkan tingkat ketuntasan sebesar 88,23%. Dengan demikian, E-LKPD berbantu Book Creator dinyatakan layak digunakan sebagai bahan ajar digital untuk mendukung pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang lebih interaktif, menarik, dan berpusat pada peserta didik di sekolah dasar.
