Abstract

Rainfed rice farming communities feel the impact of climate change because they rely on rainfall as the main source of agricultural activities. The uncertain timing of the planting season due to changes in rainfall is one of the causes of the crisis, namely crop failure so that it is difficult for farmers to meet their food needs and poses a threat of food insecurity. One of the efforts that the community can do in facing the threat of a crisis is to preserve the food barn institution. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of food institutions in the community of rainfed rice farmers in Jati Agung District in dealing with the impacts of climate change. The research was conducted by survey method, using quantitative and qualitative data. Respondents and informants were selected by simple random sampling as many as 100 community members. The research location was chosen purposively in Marga Kaya Village, South Lampung. This study found that the institutional granary plays a role in social and economic aspects. Abstract

The current institutional challenges of jimpitan are causing the jimpitan institution to experience upheaval, namely the crisis persists or begins to fade. The fading or survival of the jimpitan institution is inseparable from the social capital of the farming community. This study aims to determine social capital in the rain-fed farming community's jimpitan institution in Marga Kaya Village. The research method is in-depth interviews with selected informants by purposive sampling. The data analysis used was descriptive qualitative. The research activities were carried out in January-April 2019. The research location was chosen purposively, namely Marga Kaya Village, Jati Agung District, South Lampung Regency. Social capital in the Jimpitan institutional community of rainfed rice farmers in Marga Kaya Village is seen from three things, namely trust, norms and networks. Networking, namely connecting between farmers by communicating and conveying information regarding jimpitan activities as well as networking with outside communities such as within the Rukun Tetangga (RT) and village level. The norm is that there are rules that apply, such as the schedule for taking jimpitan at night during night patrols and the form of jimpitan in the form of rice or money according to the agreement of each Rukun Tetangga (RT). Trust is seen in jimpitan management activities by the RT head and administrators which are then used for the benefit of the common people.

Abstract

The concept of livelihood resilience provides a unique framework for examining the utilization of livelihood capital and resilience values of farming households in ensuring sustainable communities. This study was conducted in Muarareja Village, Tegal Barat Subdistrict, Tegal City, in January-March 2019 by assessing the utilization of five livelihood capitals and livelihood resilience actions of fisher households facing social, economic, and ecological pressures. Data were collected through surveys, observations, and structured interviews, supported by a literature review. Purposive stratified-accidental sampling was used to interview fishermen from every socioeconomic class. The sample was 40 small-scale fisher households divided into 35 lower-layer fisher households and five upper-layer fisher households. Data analysis was conducted descriptively with simple tabulation to describe the condition of the study area. The results showed that social capital is the main capital utilized by lower-layer fishermen. Meanwhile, physical and financial capital are mostly utilized by upper-layer fisher households. Genealogical relationships and territorial ties in the study location make social capital dominant. Self-organization is the highest resilience action by lower-layer fisher households by prioritizing the value of trust. Meanwhile, upper-layer fishermen households have a high resilience value in the capacity of learning action on the value of experimentation. Ownership of larger production capital makes it easier for upper-layer fishermen households to make many alternatives to continue fishing. Meanwhile, due to limited ownership and access to production capital, lower-layer fishing households prioritize the value of trust between neighbors and relatives as their social safety net.
