Abstract

Abstract. The study employed qualitative approach because the data were students’ responses on Google Forms, and students’ midterm score. It was aimed to exploring the use of Google forms in assessing students’ knowledge of the materials of Introduction to Linguistics. The materials were given until the sixth meetings in the Odd Semester of 2019/2020 were linguistics, the phonological term, pronunciation of certain words, the morphological formation and construction. Eleven questions on  Google forms were in multiple choice, checkbox, multiple choice/checkbox grid, and short answer. The study has found that most of the students in Class A and Class B firstly used Google forms as the assessment tool with duration was set. Google form is useful for the teacher and students because it provides automatic calculation which enables effective and efficient feedback for the students to learn their mistakes. The study also found that auto grading on Google forms only calculates the correct answers which marked in the answer key feature. Thus, it would be suitable for grading questions in multiple choice and multiple choice grid, questions in checkboxes, short answer, and checkbox grid still needs manual grading. After comparing the score of assessment on Google Forms and midterm test, it can be concluded that students’ score was improved significantly after the assessment.Keywords: Google Forms, assessment, generation-Z, students’ learning needsAbstrak. Penelitian in imenggunakan pendekatan kualitatif mengingat data yang digunakan adalah respon mahasiswa dari Google Form, dan nilai Ujian Tengah Semester Mahasiswa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui penggunaan Google form dalam menial pengetahuan mahasiswa akan materi mata kuliah Introduction to Linguistics. Materi-materi yang siberian hinge minggu keenam di Semester Ganjil than ajaran 2019/2020 adalah linguistik, istilah fonologi, pengucapan kata-kata tertentu, pembentukan dan konstruksi morfologis. Sebelas pertanyaan di Google Forms dalam bentuk pilihan ganda, kotak centang, kisi pilihan ganda/kotak centang, dan jawaban singkat. Penelitian ini telah menemukan bahwa sebagian besar mahasiswa Kelas A dan Kelas B baru pertama kali menggunakan Google Forms sebagai alat penilaian dengan durasi yang telah ditetapkan. Pada praktinya, Google Forms berguna bagi dosen dan mahasiswa karena adanya penghitungan otomatis yang memungkinkan umpan balik yang efektif dan efisien kepada mahasiswa untuk mempelajari kekeliruan mereka.Penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa penilaian otomatis Google Forms hanya menghitung jawaban benar yang ditandai di figure kunci jawaban. Sehingga, penghitungan nilai hanya berlaku pada sol dengan pilihan ganda dan kisi pilihan ganda, penghitungan nilai secara manual masih harus dilakukan pada sol dalam bentuk kotak centang, kisi kotak centang dan jawaban singkat. Setelah membandingkan nilai pada Google Forms dan Ujian Tengah Semester, ditemukan bahwa nilai mahasiswa meningskat cukup signifikan setelah penilaian dengan Google Forms.Kata kunci: Google Forms, penilaian, generasi-Z, kebutuhan pembelajaran mahasiswa.

Abstract

Publication of scientific paper becomes a common issue of Elementary School teachers because they should understand journal templates and ojs based journal system to submit an article. Team of STBA Pontianak held a community outreach to introduce kinds of scientific paper publication to all teachers in Pontianak City in the form of Seminar. This activity invited a certified teacher who have published many books and article journals. She motivated teachers to publish books. There was also a direct practice of identify OJS based journals. According to the evaluation, two materials of the activity were a new knowledge for almost all participants. In other words, they have not learned about the materials elsewhere before. It can be concluded that all participants need further practice in preparing their research paper, and in submitting it to the journal

Abstract

The main focus of the research is the female main characters in six novels of Jane Austen. The study basically aimed to identify the influence of Holmes’s social status and solidarity on the quantity of utterances. The result shows that 1,738 utterances from 266 Elinor Dashwood’s utterances, 368 Elizabeth Bennet’s utterances, 194 Fanny Price’s utterances, 473 Emma Woodhouse’s utterances, 113 Anne Elliot’s utterances and 324 Catherine Morland’s utterances. Accordingly, high social status of Emma Woodhouse produced the greatest quantity of utterances compared to other characters, and Fanny Price’s lowest social status is in the fifth position of six characters. The analysis of solidarity showed that 66.7% utterances come from characters with high solidarity scale, while 33.3% utterances belong to characters of low solidarity scale. In short, characters’ social status and solidarity are not two main factors in determining the quantity of utterances. The quantity of utterances was also determined by the interest and curiosity.Keywords: Social Status, Solidarity Scale, Utterance, Jane Austen. PENGARUH STATUS SOSIAL DAN SOLIDARITAS TERHADAP KUANTITAS UJARAN DALAM NOVEL-NOVEL JANE AUSTENAbstrakFokus penelitian pada ujaran yang disampaikan oleh tokoh utama perempuan dalam enam novel Jane Austen. Penelitian bertujuan menelaah pengaruh status sosial dan solidaritas pada kuantitas ujaran. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan 1,738 dengan rincian 266 ujaran Elinor Dashwood, 368 ujaran Elizabeth Bennet, 194 ujaran Fanny Price, 473 ujaran Emma Woodhouse, 113 ujaran Anne Elliot, and 324 ujaran Catherine Morland. Berdasarkan peringkat, status sosial tinggi Emma Woodhouse menghasilkan jumlah ujaran paling banyak, dibandingkan dengan lima tokoh lainnya, namun Fanny Price dengan status sosial paling bawah berada di peringkat kelima dari enam tokoh yang ditelaah. Telaah keakraban menunjukkan 66,7% jumlah ujaran dengan skala solidaritas tinggi, dan 33,3% ujaran dengan skala solidaritas rendah. Berdasarkan hasil analisa, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penentu kuantitas ujaran bukan hanya ditentukan oleh status sosial dan solidaritas karakter, tapi juga ditentukan oleh ketertarikan dan rasa penasaran. Abstract

The study focusing on the types of speech act presented by male main characters in Jane Austen’s Novel is a part of research roadmap plan. The research is aimed to find out types of speech acts presented by Edward Ferrars in the novel Sense and Sensibility. In conducting the research, the researcher used semantic and pragmatic approach to analyse types of speech acts. The research used descriptive qualitative approach to collect, analyse and present the data. The researcher conducted the research chronologically by identifying, classifying and analysing the utterances made by Edward Ferrars in Jane Austen’s novel Sense and Sensibility. The researcher identified the utterances presented by the male main character by interpreting the utterances. The researcher used Qadir and Riloff’s lexical and syntactic features that has been modified, as well as Searle Keywords focusing on four speech acts (Expressive, Representative, Directive and Commissive) to classify and analyse the utterances. The findings showed that representative speech acts are 62.6 %, followed by 20.8% directive speech acts, 8.3 % for each expressive and commissive speech acts. The identification of speech acts determine the character of Edward Ferrars, as a straightforward and curious gentleman.

Abstract

This article reviews the importance of self-efficacy in learning English and some ways to promote self-efficacy. Recently, self-efficacybecomes a well-known subject in learning and teaching English as a foreign language. Some former researches have shown the positive impact of self-efficacy on academic performance, defined as a self-oriented perception in assessing his/her capability in learning English. Teachers may encourage students to enhance their self-efficacy through some approaches. They may employ student-centered learning, accommodate students’ learning styles through varied teaching strategies and approaches, provide clear instruction, routine practice and feedbacks.

Abstract

The study discusses the self-efficacy of STBA Pontianak students in online learning during the covid-19 situation. The study involved 34 fifth-semester students of STBA Pontianak enrolled in learning theories subject. The study was a quantitative design. It used a questionnaire referring to the New General Self- Efficacy Scale (NGSES) of Chen, Gully, & Eden (2001). The online questionnaire contains eight variables, and five response categories of the Likert scale is distributed. The study found that the mean was 29,3, while the standard deviation was 5,1. The responses toward all 8-item NGSES were varied. The first variable had the highest mean. The overall figure showed that the students had a high self -efficacy scale in implementing online learning during the Covid-19.

Abstract

This preliminary study is motivated by the role of pragmatic markers in both spoken and written communication, which reflects speaking fluency. It employs Beeching’s (2016) matched-guise methodology, utilizing online forms to engage participants from two different locations. The primary aim of this study is to investigate EFL learners’ preferences for using pragmatic markers in their utterances. To gather data, Google Forms were distributed to universities students in two different locations. A total of 39 participants completed the questionnaire, among them were 17 respondents from Central Java, 1 from Bali, 1 from West Java, and 20 from West Kalimantan. Notably, 21 participants identified English as their second language, while 18 reported it as their third language. Upon analysis, the data indicated that participants perceived utterances containing the pragmatic markers "well," "I mean," and "sort of" as embodying polite, direct, and friendly attitudes. While “like” tends to contribute to a sense of indirectness in communication, the utterances featuring "you know" and "just" had no significant impact on the directness of the statements. Future researchers should investigate the broader categories and contextual variations of these markers that were potentially overlooked in the current study.

Abstract

The study aims to identify the pejorative words in @detiknews’ comments and hate speech targets. This study was qualitative research, specifically descriptive content analysis. The researchers took the data from Indonesian comments in eighteen news of @detiknews’ Instagram account. The researchers used MAXQDA to show the results of the coding process. The study has found seven categories of Thurlow: social personality, uncategorized, top-5, racist, homophobic, phallocentric, and physicality. In this study, pejorative words were in the standard and non-standard Indonesian, local languages (Javanese, Betawi), vulgar slang, and animal metaphors. The study has classified pejorative words (Thurlow, 2001) as directed or generalized hate speech (Elsherief et al., 2018). The findings show that directed speech was a personal matter. To sum up, pejorative words indicating hate speech in Indonesia are not randomly used; it intends to show the users’ disagreement toward the publisher or another user’s comment: it is addressed explicitly to either directed or generalized targets.

Abstract

This current study aimed to find out lexical and grammatical errors in Indonesian to English translation texts made by Indonesian EFL learners in a private senior high school in Lampung. A qualitative case study design was adopted in this research. Documentation and literature review were used as the research instruments. To obtain the data, the researchers used 15 simple sentences and a short text in Indonesian. A total of 25 students participated as the sample in this research. The results suggested that there was a total of 402 errors made by the students and the students made more grammatical errors than lexical errors. Regardless of the discrepancy in students’ CEFR level, the most frequent errors found in students’ translations were omissions (97 items), confusion of sense relations (73 items), misformations (46 items), and distortions (40 items). After identifying the errors, the researchers also attempted to describe the possible sources of errors to fill the gap in previous studies. Based on the analysis, the possible factors influencing the errors were the transfer of phonological system, transfer of lexico-semantic errors, transfer of morphological elements, transfer of grammatical elements, transfer of stylistic and cultural elements in interlingual errors, and communication strategy-based errors and learning strategy-based errors in intralingual errors. HIGHLIGHTS: Both intralingual and interlingual errors played essential roles in influencing students to commit errors when translating texts from Indonesian into English. The students committed more grammatical errors than lexical errors. It is evident that errors are rule-governed and systematic in nature, meaning that the errors committed by the students are not randomly produced but are systematic deviations of patterns in the input of language norms in which the learners have been exposed or have learned.
