Abstract

Despite numerous studies emphasizing the benefits of using background knowledge and vocabulary in EFL listening courses, there is a lack of rationale for implementing top-down strategies that holistically integrate prior knowledge, vocabulary enhancement, and self-assessment. In order to address the issues, this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the teacher's top-down strategies in improving students' listening skills. Therefore, we utilized pre-experimental research, particularly a one-group pretest-posttest design, to ascertain the strategies effectiveness. Twenty-one participants in this study were selected randomly. We used paired sample T-test with SPSS software to figure out if there was a statistically significant difference between the pretest and post-test scores after repeated intervention encounters. The statistical analysis showed that the average post-test score (M= 77.8571) was considerably higher than the average pretest score (M= 63.5714). The findings indicated that the students listening proficiency improved after being addressed with top-down strategies. This finding suggests that the teachers top-down approach helps students raise their listening comprehension skills. The study's results call for using top-down strategies to stimulate students' listening comprehension, to learn more effectively, and increase their listening consciousness.

Abstract

Technological advances have created translation tools as part of translation technology, which is widely used by the public and academics, including students. On the one hand, students accept the existence of translation technology positively as it provides easiness for them to do their coursework. This research aimed to discover the impact of translation technology on students' translation skills. The result of this study is a recommendation for translation course lecturers to suggest that students utilize translation technology. The participants of this study were 25 students of the English Education Study Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Palu. They were selected by using a total sampling technique. The data found indicates that a constant of 39.234 shows that students' Translation Skills are worth 39.234 without using Translation Technology. The regression coefficient of 0.794 indicates that each increase in Translation Technology use will increase Translation Skills by 0.794. The results of this study signify that translation technology does not significantly impact students' translation skills. The probability number is 0.103, which is greater than 0.05. Consequently, the H0 is accepted, or there is no significant influence of Translation Technology on the Translation Skills of student translators. The study implies that technology tool is a secondary aspect of promoting translating skills.

Abstract

For the people of Palu, English has yet to become an important part of communication that must be introduced to children early. English is only known and mastered by academics. Meanwhile, the general public (non-academics) uses Indonesian or regional languages in various daily communication activities. This community service activity aims to introduce English to elementary school-age children. The implementation took place in the Talise-Valangguni sub-district, Mantikulore District. The servants in this activity are lecturers and students from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Muhammadiyah University, Palu. From this activity, 16 elementary school students were interested in participating in learning English. The small number of participants shows that interest and motivation in learning English still needs to be higher.

Abstract

Taman Pendidikan al-Quran (TPQ) is a non-formal educational institution focusing on Quranic learning and values for children. Its presence is crucial for introducing and instilling Quranic values at an early age. TPQ plays a vital role in nurturing children's spiritual, intellectual, and emotional development. It also aids in building character and reducing educational disparities. KKN-Dik, a program by Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, aims to revitalize TPQ activities and engage the community in teaching Quranic studies. The activities include teaching Quranic recitation, holding discussions, and involving students in teaching, ensuring the continuation of Quranic education beyond the program's duration.

Abstract

While mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) and artificial intelligence (AI) are known to enhance EFL learning, there exists a deficiency in comprehending their exact influence on discrete speaking sub-skills. This study addresses this gap by providing a granular analysis of how the AI-powered application ELSA Speak affects specific aspects of speaking proficiency and motivation. Employing a quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest design over six weeks, 20 Indonesian EFL learners were divided into an experimental group (n=10) using ELSA Speak and a control group (n=10) receiving conventional instruction. The results showed a notable enhancement in the speaking abilities of the experimental group, with statistical significance (t(9) = 6.025, p < .001), whereas the control group showed no significant improvement. The mean score for the experimental group increased from 58.6 to 68.7, with fluency showing the most substantial gain (+18.3 points), followed by intonation (+16.8) and pronunciation (+8.1). Furthermore, questionnaire data indicated very high motivation (M=4.49/5.00). A significant limitation of this study is its limited sample size, which impacts the generalizability of the results. The primary practical implication is that AI tools like ELSA Speak are highly effective as supplementary resources for building learner fluency and confidence. More extensive studies with broader demographics and longer time frames are required to validate the results.
